And so Croatia via a quick walk around Porto Montenegro, a short cut by ferry & an hour crossing the borders out of Montenegro & into Croatia, not bad. We got to Dubrovnik, our first port of call and checked into our Airbnb before wandering down into the magnificent old town. Pretty busy but after taking in the sights we looked for something to eat and came across a band playing some old standards and sat down to watch them. Great players and the lead was a guy that looked like one of the chuckle brothers! As is our wont we did the walking tour on our first morning in Dubrovnik- pretty good it was too - Freetour.com Clearly there were a lot of Game of Thrones references including Black water bay (colourina bay) and the ... read more

For our last day we visited Krka National Park, not far south of Zadar. It was getting hot as we headed out & it only got hotter over the day. We started off visiting Skradinski Bu, hiking 850m down to the river then around the boardwalks. LOTS of tour groups moving slowly & taking up all the space making it hard to weave our way through.. The waterfalls were very pretty though. We had a short swim at Skradinski buk which was very welcome as the temperature had climbed into the 30s. We got the bus back up to the car park instead of hiking the steep stony path, I'm not sure it was faster but at least it had air con! There was a bit of a bus jam getting out, but luckily our bus ... read more

Up early & walked over the seawards jetty to get our boat tour of Kornati National Park with Mikado tours. We were a group of 20 adults & a couple of young kids (baby & 3 year old) which was a good number for the size of the boat. We set off out to the islands with a 2h45 ride to the first stop, we were given coffee & offered Rakija but we decided it was too early for that! This was followed by breakfast of cheese or cheese & ham sandwiches. After a couple of hours we reached Kornati National Park & the boat went around several islands before our first stop was Our Lady of Tarac church a small 17th century church built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica from the 6th ... read more

After a 4.5hr bus trip to Zadar we arrived at our accomodation at about 6pm. We had chosen a hostel for our first night and for the next 4 nights we were moving to a room that we booked on Airbnb that had yet received no reviews and had been newly listed, so we had no idea what to expect and had taken a bit of a gamble. This was the case for most of the travels. We had no idea what to expect and most of it was a surprise: good or bad. Anyway the hostel was a good surprise. We had a lovely room in a boutique type place and it felt friendly and relaxed from the moment we checked in. Another guy from our bus was also checking in ahead of us and ... read more

Wow Sibenik! Wow! So beautiful! An iconic looking Mediterranean style small town built on a slope leading up to the medieval forts of St Michael's and St John's. Our "micro room" was in the middle of the old town with our shutters opening out to a romantic court yard cafe. Our tiny room was equipped with everything we needed for a 1 night stop. So great to have our own space as well! Not that we didn't appreciate the kindness and hospitality of our Croatian host in Zadar but we are too old for that and we craved our space and freedom. Sibenik is perfect. Such a maze of romantic alleyways and a comfortable balance of tourists and locals. An absolutely beautiful swimming beach just a short walk further along the coast past all the water ... read more

A hot walk from the bus stop which was at the Split Ferry Terminal through the UNESCO listed 4th century Diocletian's Palace in the Old town of Split. An overwhelming number of people and tour offices as well as busses and ferries. From the drive in to Split it looked like a disaster. Over crowded decaying concrete high rise apartments everywhere and ugly scars mined into the surrounding hills. I decided that I would hate this town but then some of that was possibly due to the anxiety that had arisen from having to leave Sibenik earlier than I wanted to. I had carefully researched the route we had to walk to find our new accomodation but stopped in the old town losing confidence of where I should go as none of the pedestrian laneways were ... read more

DUBROVNIK – The Walled City The nice thing about traveling by yourself is that you can change your mind and your itinerary. In Cavtat, I took an extra day to rest and recuperate after diving. The next day I caught one of the small ferry boats to Dubrovnik so I could see the city from the water. Coming ashore, the hurry and scurry of the tourist site was disconcerting. It felt like I was on a movie set. It was hot. And noisy. I stood in the slim shadow of Orlando’s Column, next to a big sign announcing various activities happening in Dubrovnik. It barely provided shade while I tried to get my bearings. Behind me the church bells of St Blaise began to ring. I walked up the steps and entered the dim interior. Mass ... read more

DIVE DESTINATION CROATIA It wasn’t easy. I bought a ticket on Veuling Air to fly to Croatia from Sicily. I had to pay extra to avoid a full day layover in Rome, then I had to pay one hundred euros for my check-in bag, at the airport. Although I had been the second person in line three hours earlier, by the time I paid for the luggage and got through security the information board said my plane was boarding. It wasn’t. I ran to the gate where people were milling around in no particular order like a pen full of sheep, and almost as crowded. After a lengthy wait, we finally boarded the plane. What a relief. I booked an Airbnb in Cavtat, a little town on the coast in Croatia, near Dubrovnik. The Bacan Serviced ... read more

Sorry, I'm a bit behind with my blog - to busy having fun...………….. Thursday 2nd May to Saturday 4th May Ston We are now retracing our steps back to Split. We passed Ston on the way down to Dubrovnik but the nearest campsite didn’t open until 1st May. The campsite is about four kilometres outside of Ston at Prapratno tucked into a steep sided small bay with the car ferry to Mljet leaving from a jetty at one end. It is an idyllic setting. We found a walking path to Ston that avoided the road and took us past smallholdings with vegetable patches, strawberry fields, cherry orchards, vines, olive trees and beehives. I have seen a few snakes on our walks up in the mountains but today John overtook me in the snake spotting stakes after ... read more
