I guess I should remember that "no problem" as an epithet of hope is an extremely unwise remark for a traveller to make. As we left Novi Sad, we encountered only problems - firstly running to catch our train in time, secondly being told we had to pay a supplement for not having a reservation (which the european rail database said was not necessary on this train) and thirdly, after all this stress, sitting in a steamy oven of a carriage half-full of Serbian grandmothers who refused to open any windows because of the noise were not exactly our wishes. Anyway, when we arrived into Belgrade, we immediately noticed that it could not be much more different to Novi Sad, considering that they are both part of the same country. While Novi Sad was flat and ... read more

Add a new country to the list - Bulgaria! In two days we were really only able to visit Sofia. It was a very pleasant and walkable city. The residents were most considerate, helpful, and friendly. Historic sights, parks, and cafes were relatively close to each other and the city just seemed to be designed for walking. With so little time we hit a few of the main sights, had some great Bulgarian food, walked miles of city streets, and enjoyed fireworks and a musical preformance in front of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Churches and cathedrals are some of the main historic sights in the city. In fact, the city is named after one of the oldest Eastern Orthodox churches, dating back to the 6th century. We were only able to visit 2: the St. ... read more

Travis and I decided to diversify our explorations, and so while he flew to Cairo to see the pyramids, I took a bus to Sofia. Once again we went through customs at the border between Turkey and Bulgaria. This time our luggage was x-rayed as we passed through the Turkish side. After a stop at the duty-free mall we proceeded through the Bulgarian side. However, one of the border guards became irate and made us all get off the bus for another luggage check. I asked some of the other passengers what was going on. Apparently everyone had bought cartons of cigarettes at the duty-free mall, and the border guards were only allowing 2 packs per person. However, after laying out my backpack, unzipped, for about half an hour, we were told to load back into ... read more

SOFIA Day 68 I woke up on the train to see the country side of Bulgaria passing me by. It seemed to be a lot of empty country side and some small farms here and there. Not one of the most riveting views I have had. I arrived into Sofia after passing through a slum area on the outskirts of the city. It is really sad to see children playing in piles of garbage. I headed out of the train station towards the city centre. There is a beautiful statue in the centre of the town high up in the sky of Sofia. I walked passed the many beautiful mosques and churches. On the top of the opera house between the chimneys stacks are music notes. Apparently, opera is very popular in Bulgaria. I then ... read more

After leaving Turkey, the next 50 hours were a pain and drain, as we blundered our way to Budapest, starting with an overnight pit stop in Sofia, Bulgaria. We decided to catch an overnight bus from Istanbul, that would land us in Sofia at 7.30am. We had heard good things about Turkish buses, and were told to not even bother with a Bulgarian bus company, and this advice was true. Good bus, served tea, cake, and made convenient stops. What was not convenient was the Turkey - Bulgaria border check point at 11.30pm, which took approximately 2.5 hours to get through. This included a lot of waiting on the bus, and then waiting in queue off the bus to get through the Turkey border, then a stop at the Duty Free shopping centre, where everyone but ... read more

After the false dawn in the last blog, we found the changing of the guard this time - same location outside the President’s Building minus the heavies with the dark glasses. The numbers of soldiers were somewhat less, but more than compensated by some red uniforms and an awful lot of goose stepping. Central Sofia is not that big on must see sights, but various recommendations after the Nevski seem to point to the Sofia Synagogue. We never did see the interior, as it was firmly locked up on both occasions - the sign indicated opening times, but the padlock gates suggested otherwise. The nearby mosque held the same amount of entertainment value. The nearby Ladies Market seemed to be populated by people we didn’t really need to meet, selling goods we didn’t particularly want - ... read more

The arrival into the new swanky Terminal 2 at Sofia Airport on the eastern fringes of the city was smooth and efficient. The terminal is presumably an investment by the EEC to redistribute wealth across all it’s citizens and give an outwardly modern first impression of Bulgaria to the outside world. We relieved the cash machine in the arrivals hall of some Leva and avoided the vigorous pestering of the taxi touts, who were keen to relieve as much as possible of the above wedge. If you don’t fancy the Number 84 bus, a good first decision in Sofia Airport is to approach one of the two taxi desks to the right of the car hire places in the arrivals - one of which I can’t recall and the other being OK Supertrans or something very ... read more

Well umm dont know where Caroline left the last one!! Think we just left 2 days of glorious sunshine on the med and headed north (getting sick of Turkey) We first went to see the calcium pools at Pamukkale and so old ruined city the pools could have been fantastic but as water wasnt flowing over the edges it was quite dull. From there to Ephesus another ruined city from way back when Jesus played fullback for Jerusalem....way over priced being a tourist destination and alittle concrete than one would have like and coach parties coming out our ass. So a nice day in the sun then to Gallipoli for Aussie rememberance and to see the sites from world war one! (Had to educate caroline on what happened here) While free camping we meet a nice ... read more

We couldn't have asked for better weather for our last three days here in Sofia. Temperatues reached the high teens and overnight temperatures were warmer than the they have been since Alexandroupolis. The rain even stayed away. I was able to where my shorts on Friday eventhough I was probably the one person in the city doing so. We spent Thursday doing most of our sightseeing. Because Sofia is so small, almost all of the major attractions were very central. We really lucked out this time, because our hotel was close to the tourist attractions and shopping. We may have lost out on the souvenier shopping in Istanbul, but we had a better shopping experience for clothes here in Sofia (we changed our trip from Istanbul to Sofia because of the prevailing winds in Western Turkey). ... read more

Well we made it!! 780 Km of cycling came to an end today when we landed in central Sofia... It was not without a struggle.... Leaving Sandanski, the skies were still sketchy.. it had stormed all night, the streets were wet, and it was still cloudy. We actually waited to see if the skies would break up... We finally pulled out around 8:30 and hoped for the best... while the sun wasn’t shining, it was a vast improvement from the previous day. It wasn't raining. We took a back road in lieu of the single lane highway for the first 25Km.. the road was quiet and scenic, but not in the best shape. We got lost in two towns, and in some of the towns, the roads were mud... so we got pretty dirty, which pissed ... read more
