Ghent After another night on the river, we woke up at the port of Ghent or Gent. I’ve seen it spelled both ways. Google prefers Gent in the English version, Ghent in Belgian. Going from the Netherlands to Belgium is a short trip but from the minute we got off the boat, there was a palpable difference that’s very hard to describe but I felt very good being in Belgium. It looked different. It sounded different. And the people were very, very, friendly though they didn’t all speak English like in the Netherlands. It seemed like the Belgians were much more like the French or Italians, loose and emotional, while the Dutch were more like the English, stiff (upper lip and the like) and proud. This is just me and those of you that have a ... read more

Hello Everyone Yesterday we got up early to go to a Museum,we were told it was one of the best in Gent, when we arrived we were told it was closedon a Wednesday!!! We made the most of the day and saw the rest of Gent, walked around the shops all to expensive for us,but it was fun. We had a meal out at night. Today we got on the tram to the train station, and hopped on the train to Oostend took about 45 mins, first stop was Brugge, then ours. We hopped on another tram that goes down the coastline towards the Netherlands 68km there and 68 km back, passing all the beach resorts and seeing some of the sea. The rest of day we walked around Oostend down to the beach, and had a fish lunch, and took photos of some ... read more

Hi Everyone We had a fabulous train holiday through Sweden and Norway, and we said our goodbyes to everyone, who were going in all directions of the globe We had a night in London, and next Day proceeded to catch the Euro star to Ghent via Brussels. Spent the afternoon at Ghent getting our washing done a5 the Laundramat in town and doing a bit of food shopping. In bed bed early as we were shattered!! Today we walked around the town, and then we had a boat trip through the canals ,they explained all about the buildings, fantastic old buildings. In the 2nd world war Ghent authorities asked the Germans when they came to leave the buildings alone ,in return the people of Ghent would house and feed the German troops, that is why there are very old buildings standing today ... read more

A busy day today, a full day tour to Ghent (where the ship is docked) and Bruges. We woke this morning to find another ship inches from our balcony - docked in Ghent harbour, along with 6 other ships! So again, had to cross another ship to reach the shore, then buses to the city of Ghent which is some way from the harbour. After the bus dropped us off, we started (yet another) our walking tour of Ghent, a mediaeval city in Belgium. Our tour guide was telling us that in this part of the Netherlands (Flanders) there are lots of languages. Children learn to speak Flemish, which is a spoken only language but similar to dutch. Then when they start pre-school, at 2 1/2, they learn dutch, then in primary school, French. And then ... read more

Belgique, you are magnifique!! We were sad to leave Oudenaarde, not only because of the memorable brewery tour, my dears, but because we had little time to tour the city. We left Chiel and Jantien to sail Elodie down river whilst we headed off for another very pleasant cycle. Mostly along the canal paths with the occasional foray into the Belgian countryside. First detour was to a nature school for children. They had some great stuffed animals and birds and videos of birds in their natural habitats. Soon after leaving the school I discovered I had a flat tyre. A quick stop to reinflate it and we were on our way. Next stop was a wonderful patisserie and coffee shop. It required a couple of hill climbs to get there but was well worth the effort. ... read more

Up at 0600 hrs and caught the bus in to Gent from the camp ground. Previously we'd seen a lot of mole hill but no moles however as we were walking through the park we saw a magpie attacking a small furry creature which turned out to be a mole. Well Gus and I rescued it returned it to the grassy area where it could hide. Sight seeing on Gent is great. Heaps of historic buildings. See photos and short comments.... read more

Up early as usual and breakfast at the hotel. Bob and Fran joined us. With panniers packed Gus and I attempted to program the GPS devices much to the amusement of Bob. We eventually got it sorted and after bidding farewell to Bob, Fran, Bec and John we set off. Always sad to say goodbye to my brother but not as bad as usual this time. He's a legend in my eyes. The track went under the river through a tunnel but the majority of the ride was on dedicated cycle tracks which were a mixture of beautiful tracks, dirt tracks and teeth rattling cobble stone roads which not only rattled your fillings but also the Crown Jewels. Ah well! Not much call for those anyway whilst I'm overseas. Had a few operator errors with the ... read more

This day we headed to Ghent. We knew we wanted to take a boat tour around the city, but weren't exactly sure what else we would do. After walking all over Antwerp the day before, our feet weren't exactly ready for another 4 hour walk. As it turned out, the weather was really warm and we were not dressed appropriately. We really hadn't planned on it being so warm so all our shorts were back in England. We took the 40-minute boat tour, which was very nice, and then headed back to the house for a relaxing afternoon there. A little history on Ghent. It started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie in the later middle ages and became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe. It ... read more

Like trying to choose at a giant international ice cream parlor, where all the flavors are exciting and inviting, we sit down each month to decide where our next destination might be. We can only choose one flavor per month, so we have to be smart about our choice. Pick something that you don’t like and you may be stuck for a whole month with a half-eaten, melted, soggy-cone mess that no amount of effort will repair to the level of expectations you had before you took your first bite. We sit around a table; our favorite web sites loaded on the computer and try to use logic to pick what destination might interest us in the upcoming month. Like looking through the jewel case display of global deliciousness available at your favorite gelateria, we peruse ... read more
