The Austrian home of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Graz is a beautiful city nestled in the foothills of the Styrian Alps. It is Austria’s second largest city, and has a lot to offer. We decided yet again to make use of the 11 euro Saturday train tickets and make our way south. After a beautiful train ride that winded through the mountains and into long tunnels, we were finally there, and choose to spend our day like most other day trips; walking and sitting in the sun. Our hike through town led us into the main square, which crosses past the awesome river front. The best view of the city was had on top of the cliff, which houses the towns’ big clock. From there, you can see the whole city, and the mountains in the distance. The ... read more

On the weekend of October 21-22, we made an overnight trip to Graz, Austria. This trip was arranged by Central College for us students studying here in Vienna, so all we had to do was pack our bags and enjoy the ride! What a way to travel. :-) Saturday morning we were up bright and early to catch our train. The train ride there was in itself a pleasure. We traveled through the hillsides, in amongst the trees, all of which were changing colors. It was a gorgeous sight. Upon arrival in Graz, we found our hostel and unloaded our bags. After we grabbed some lunch, we made our way to the Tourist Information office, where we met our guide for the day’s tour. We joined a larger group of people and all hopped onto a ... read more

But which border is the question? :) Not towards the spring break strongholds of Cancun or Rocky Point, but - Slovenia! Lindsay and I are going to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, hopefully to be followed by some sunshine on the Istrian coast, and then over the Adriatic to Italy for a few days in Venice. First stop - before leaving Austria - Graz, a beautiful town in the south. The day we left, we had coffee with my roommate, and she had lots of good recommendations of stuff to do and see. We had trouble getting out of Vienna, just barely missed the train we were supposed to take, but it was a-ok, the weather was great so we went and sat in the backyard of the Belvedere Palace, ate sandwiches and played music. I spent 5 weeks in Graz, Austria this past summer. I had never spent so much time in Austria before, and it was rather lovely. Graz is a wonderful little city, over 850 years old it is the capital of the Austrian province of Steiermark (Styria). Its beautifully restored Altstadt (Old City), it is the largest in Europe and all this makes it an architectural treasure. Steiermark has a beautiful and varied landscape ranging from magnificent mountains for hiking to green hillsides and valleys for food and wine production. The long and rich cultural tradition of Graz and Steiermark dates back to the 14th century when Graz was the residence of the Austrian Emperor. That tradition continues today through the Opernhaus (Opera House), Schauspielhaus (Drama Theatre), the excellent concert halls, and an exciting and creative concert ... read more
