My boyfriend and I decided to go to the Caribbean for our 2007 trip. We picked St. Thomas, USVI and we couldn't been more happier. The island of St. Thomas is just AMAZING! We stayed at the Marriott French Reef which was conveniently located in Charlotte Amalie. Everymorning we would take the water taxi from the hotel dock to the main town ($6 each way) where you would find a number of restaurants and shops. We liked Cuzzin's Restaurant (deep fried conch) and Glady's Cafe (Jerk Porkchops) the most for some real authentic Caribbean flavors. They are the locals' favorite. Shopping in St. Thomas are mainly for high-end watches and cameras, expensive liquors, jewelries and loose diamonds. We went to a few stores to compare prices and we found the best prices at Little Switzerland, the ... read more

St. Thomas has all the flavor of what you would expect in a Caribbean Island. It has shopping, arts and galleries, fine dining, nightlife, water sports, a great beach and great attractions. Linda opted for the beach. I took a tour of the island. Near the top of the island is a great place that was once owned by an American Company for a vacation treat for their top executives. It was given to the government and it is now a tourist attraction. It sports some best views of the island, great flower gardens and more. It was a real treat. One other place there was a man playing the steel drum Caribbean style. It was absolutely beautiful music. I bought his album. Again, there wasn’t enough time to enjoy St. Thomas. Just enough to make ... read more

This morning we woke relatively early, ate our baked goods and went to my favorite beach on St. Thomas: Lindquist Bay. Lindquist is one of the few undeveloped beaches on the island, and this has been controversial recently. All beaches in the Virgin Islands are public, and landowners must provide reasonable access to the public over land. Lindquist was bought by a large US developer, fences were put up, and several years of lock and fence cutting took place on the trail to the beach. Now, the fence is open for pedestrian traffic, and a security guard actually sits (naps) there and makes sure no cars drive in. Apparently the people are trying to take the land under eminent domain and keep the beach undeveloped. Despite the local popularity of the beach, on a weekday, we ... read more

This morning we got a ride down to Magen's Bay, which is about 3 minutes from my sister's apartment. We spent the morning there while our hosts worked at local schools for the morning. Magen's Bay was typically packed with cruise ship tourists on Thursdays when I lived here, but this being the lowest month of low season, there were no cruise ships in town and maybe 10 locals swimming on this mile long beach. Completely empty beaches are a trend you'll notice the next few blog entries. September is low season because it's hot and muggy, and there's the possibility of hurricanes. Also, because it's low season about half the restaurants and hotels are closed. But it's the best time to visit. Leaving Magen's, we stopped by St. Thomas Dairies for a milkshake. Bananaquit and ... read more

Seattle - Dallas - Puerto Rico - St. Thomas, USVI Our first stop is St. Thomas, J's old stomping grounds and current home of his sister and her boyfriend. We're inexplicably allowed 6 segments in the North American continent, so we made use of it by hopping down to the "Caribbian". Leaving Seattle at 6 AM, with about 6 hours of sleep in the last 48, we arrived in STT at 9:30 PM. We were filmed leaving the airplane by a TV crew that was filming a reality show for BET along the lines of The Real World. The Puerto Rico airport is pretty lame, so we were looking to eat somewhere in Charlotte Amalie after our flight. The only place still serving food after 10PM was the Open Pit BBQ, which we were assured was ... read more

Today we arrived in St. Thomas. It was so beautiful there. We took a skyride to Paradise Point, which is 700 feet above sea level. There was a great view of the harbor from up there. After we rode back down, we decided to head out to the beach. We heard that the beach at Magens Bay was a really beautiful beach, so we took a cab there. The cab driver was not a very good driver. He was eating the same time he was driving. We thought for sure he was going to crash the car. The beach was really beautiful, and it wasn't crowded, which was nice. We decided to leave as the sun was starting to set because the bugs were starting to come out. We found a little shuttle bus that would ... read more

Up at crack of dawn Coral World and Island Drive Stinking hot outside! Today’s port of call is to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. We had to clear US immigration by 7:15AM so we were up and ready by 6:45AM. It’s amazing that the three of us were up and at ‘em and ready to go on time. Pretty impressive since the last few days we’ve been such slow and lazy bums. The immigration process was quite quick and painless. First we picked up our passports that Royal Caribbean has been holding for us and then we lined up to see an immigration officer. The woman I got asked me two questions. Where do you live and when you do plan on going back to Canada. So lickety split we were ready to head ... read more

Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands Capital is Charlotte Amalie Weather overcast and looks like rain. Up early and breakfast at the buffet to get ready for our first excursion. Interesting day. Our tour bus is really a converted pickup truck with bench seating in the bed with narrow steps cut in the side to get in and a makeshift roof on an open frame. Did have roll down plastic windows to keep the rain out. Narrow roads and they drive on the left side, wild drivers and some light rain. Island is very lush with vegetation. Trip to top of highest mountain on the island and enjoyed the views. Three ships in port. Could see quite a few of the other islands. Dropped off in town to see the sights and shop.
