Wow, winter has come and gone and now it is almost Easter. My, how time flies! We spent the winter months in the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. Christmas in George Town in the Bahamas was a first for us. I believe someone reported there were 150 boats in Elizabeth Harbour during the holidays. We spent Christmas and New Years there meeting up with old friends and making new friends before heading south. Winds in the Bahamas can be quite blustery in the winter months so I can't say that I enjoyed the trip south very much. We breezed through the Turks and Caicos only spending one night there before setting out for the Dominican Republic (the DR). We had bypassed the DR on our trip north to the Bahamas in 2009 so we decided ... read more

Already we are in our final week in Jamaica. We really have enjoyed ourselves and it is a reminder that Negril is one of our favourite destinations! We are certainly entertained everyday on the beach by the travelling entrepeneurs. I did a little experiement the other day. In a span of 30 minutes these are the products that came by for sale: ( fresh fruit, patties, cooked lobster, scarves, tours, beach balls, massages, aloha vera, popcorn, peanats, cotton candy, jewellery, fresh fruit juices, cigarettes, parasailing, baskets, baked goods, jerk pork, jet ski rides, art work) What more could you ask for!!?? These vendors are not all pushy or annoying, just amusing, friendly and hard working. As well the fresh fruit and veggie truck comes by the condo most days they also sell various kinds of bread ... read more

Funnyclown and I had a mission in Jamaica- to meet some real Jamaicans in the real part of Jamaica- outside the port. We were told before and since that our plan was crazy, but we didn't listen to all those people who told us that Jamaicans were going to rob and/or hold us hostage, kidnap us ect. It didn't happen folks. Although initially leaving port Falmouth was a culture shock for me, I wasn't afraid. It was a bit overwhelming being shouted at from all sides as we left the port and headed down the dirt road that had suddenly appeared before us. The area just beyond the port is jam packed with taxis charging upwards of 80 dollars to leave and return to the port. Merchants lined the road with their wares and one woman ... read more

Greetings from Negril. Life is a little slower this week since our friends headed back to Edmonton on Tuesday. Lots more reading, cross word puzzles, dominoes and card games! However, we still enjoy our daily walks on the beach, swimming in the ocean and watching the Jamaicans go about their daily business. One of the highlights here is the many live reggae concerts held on the beach. The only problem is they don't get started until 11 p.m. just when we are heading to bed. I guess the concerts are not for the senior citizen!! However, there is reggae music playing everywhere so we do get into the goove of it. Reggae gusy with megaphones walk the beach everyday advertising the shows. We have tried some of the authentic Jamaican food that is offered at many ... read more

This morning I sit in awe at a little restuarant table sipping a tropical smoothy next to our resort looking out onto the beautiful calm aqua blue ocean and sugary white sand. The scene never ceases to amaze me!! Week two was great in Jamaica! A highlight for us here is the beach as you can see by the pictures. Negril Beach is 7 miles long and never a dull moment. Many days we walk about 4 kms east along the beach. the Jamaicans selling their wares are fun and they are anxious to invite you to look. Wood carvings, beachwear, jewellery, massages, jerk chicken and everything you can imaagine are set out on the beach. As well many of the vendors trudge up and down the beach keen to make a sale. Hi Everyone!! We arrived safe and sound in Jamaica on Saturday afternoon after some bizaar overnight flights. Oh well, coming back to Jamaica is worth a few red eye flights!! A funny thing was that we had to circle Jamaica for 30 minutes while they repaired a pot hole on the runway!! But we landed safely and our friends Gary and Carol from Edmonton arrived a few hours later and soon we were on the shuttle van on the way to Negril with a red stripe in hand!!! Our driver, Carlton gave us a little commentary along the way which was great. To us, Negril is like paradise!! As we set our eyes on the white sand beach and crystal clear blue aqua water we knew why we wanted to return again. As well, the vibe ... read more

I completed the Katimavik program on August 18th and returned home that day. I spent the rest of summer visiting family and friends whom I haven’t seen for 6 months and missed very much. I wanted to get involved in the travel industry so I wanted to find work in a hotel. I worked at a Future Inns Moncton as a housekeeper. The work was not bad, but I really started to get bored of it, and Moncton. So almost every night when I got home I looked for work anywhere but here. I looked everywhere from in Canada to overseas. I came across an ad in a place called Mount Edge, Jamaica. It was located in the Blue Mountains, about 30 minutes away from the capital; Kingston. Ever since I was young I had this ... read more

Arrived Kingston to find no pick up driver; OK, go to Plan B. Contact with accommodation person was greeted with a no answer. Plan C - wing-it with local taxi; all good in the end. Like most Caribbean places, homes/buildings are heavily protected with security grills, steel fencing, razor wire and the like. I have seen no evidence of crime in travels so far but the amount of security guards suggest otherwise. Main attraction was the visit and tour of Bob Marley's place. Tried the roasted peanuts from the street vendors pushing trolley type boilers whistling with steam - very good. Jamaica gets my vote as having the best mangoes; extremely juicy and fleshy. They have a slightly stronger flavor and rival our home grown Bowens. ... read more

Hello hello, I’ve now been onboard the Oasis for 100 days. Which means that coupled with my seatime on the Independence, I only have 132 more days until I’m finished on the Oasis. But more importantly, I’ll be finished as a cadet forever! Life here is interesting as always. Seems that every day offers something completely different. Last week in Fort Lauderdale I went with one of the fire teams to a marine fire school. It was a fantastic learning experience! We coupled search and rescue with fire fighting in enclosed spaces, so it was even more hands on than the last time I went to fire school. The only bad part about it was the weather. 38 celsius out and horribly humid outside the burn box, but inside with the fire burning the temperature hit ... read more
