I am writing this blog on Microsoft Word, 37,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean heading towards Honolulu. It is our third flight of the day. We got up at 4am this morning and caught our first flight at 8.30am from Montego Bay to Miami, where we had a two hour wait before boarding the next plane. We then had a 5 hour flight from the east coast to Los Angeles on the west coast. Straight from one plane to an identical plane for the last leg of our flight, the five and a quarter hour journey to Hawaii. We have managed to snatch some sleep but we have been awake for 15 hours so far and with Shrek The Final Chapter blaring through my headphones you will have forgive me if this blog seems a little ... read more

The peace and tranquility that Rachel and I have been enjoying was shattered on Sunday evening, with the arrival of parents, cousins, an Auntie and two children seemingly powered by Duracell! And what great fun it has been. Callum and Georgia are five and eight and to say they have kept us on our toes is an understatement! Sunday 8th August started with a walk around Ocho Rios and the craft market where we bought the children a small welcome to Jamaica gift. It was a lovely day and we were soon back at the villa relaxing by the pool and learning the basics of dominoes from the grand master of the game... Floyd! We really enjoyed and have purchased ourselves a dominoes set for when we get home. So, if anyone fancies a game let ... read more

It's hard to believe we have been here in Jamaica for over a week now. One sunny day seems to roll into another as we lazily lounge around reading or lazily float about the pool on the lilos. Each day features a torrential downpour and rumbles of thunder but thankfully no more injections, yet! Rachel said to me that there is no point in putting up another blog yet but those of you who have spent more than five minutes in my company, surely know that I can and will talk about anything! Last weekend was a holiday weekend here and the villa staff (apart from the head of the house) had a long weekend off with their families and we were left to fend for ourselves... sort of! On August 1st Jamaica celebrates Emancipation Day ... read more

We arrived in the beautiful Caribbean island of Jamaica on Tuesday evening after a very swift and simple flight from Miami to Montego Bay. After a brief hold up at the understaffed immigration desk, we collected our luggage and were soon making our way along the dark coastal roads of northern Jamaica. With the windows down and the cooling sea breeze blowing in our faces we relaxed for the hour and a half journey to the villa. There wasn't much time left in the day or energy in our legs to do much more than have a quick look round and a drink before bed in somewhat nicer surroundings than the motels we have become accustomed to on our road trip in the U.S.A. Breakfast was a delicious platter of fresh, tropical fruit including pineapple, papaya, ... read more

Today was quite possibly the most fun day I've ever had. I've had a lot of fun days, seen a lot of cool things, and done a lot of cool thins, but today...well if it doesn't top them it ties them for first. The day started at 9 am when we were picked up by a small van. He took us through Montego Bay to two other resorts to pick up other people. Among them were two newly weds (as of yesterday!) John and Samantha. They had gotten married at their resort and were using it as a dual wedding/honeymoon. They were very nice people and close to our age (26~). We chatted with them for the hour ride up a mountain and through the jungle. Once we got to the “base camp” we headed to ... read more

Today was a very long, but very fun day. We started off by waking up early, 8:30 am, slathering on some sunscreen, swimsuits, and beach towels, and heading down to meet our tour bus by 9. The bus left promptly and we were on our way to Ocho Rios for a long day. It took about an hour to an hour and forty five minutes by bus to get from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios, but this is only because the highway is two lane and the speed limit is 80 KPH aka 50 MPH aka SLOW. Once we arrived we went to two souvenir shopping centers and spent too much money. Then we went to a crafter's market, which was one of the strangest experiences I've ever had. These people live in extreme poverty here ... read more

Hi from Jamaica! Its Thursday, July 22nd, 2010. Its about 10:42 PM and I'm sitting on my balcony at the Holiday Inn SunSpree All-inclusive resort in Montego Bay Jamaica. Its amazing here! We arrived after a short 3.5 hour flight on the 21st, and we took a quick 10 minute cab ride (with a nice/funny driver) to our resort. Once checked in, we dug into the food and drinks and we really haven't stopped since. Kenji and I are eating like 4-6 times a day! Mostly snacking all day with one or two decent sized meals in between. I'm going to be fat when I come back!! There are a lot of things included in the package, but some that are not. You can use snorkels for free but cannot go out to a reef (on ... read more

Well, After a very long, and very tedious day, we have discovered that travel to Lima is impossible for the next 3 days. As Kenji's dad works for Continental, we are flying very cheap, and therefore we are on standby. Today the flight was extremly overbooked, due to weather conditions from yesterday, and as a result we missed the flight today. The problem is, the next 3 days are also really overbooked for the Lima flights. After sitting down for 3 hours today and exhausting all possabilities (Panama, New York, Los Angels, Bolivia, Columbia, etc) and then connecting flights, we realized there is no way to get us to Peru on standby in the next 4 days. Even if we paid full price for a ticket (1800$) there is a high chance we wouldn't make it ... read more

After 9.5 hours travel from London, we arrived at Norman Manley airport, Kingston, Jamaica. We were picked up by my colleagues T & C, and got our first lessons in what Jamaica is like. A strange fruit was sold just outside the airport terminal, and that was a "jelly" coconut, a not yet fully matured coconut that you enjoy with a straw, and perhaps a knife, if you have somewhere to put the fruit's meat. Some five minutes away from the airport in T's car, we had our second lesson: we got hit from behind! Luckily, us Swedes had our seat belts on and it wasn't at any high speed, so no-one was hurt (but the car itself). Also, the guy who hit the car stayed at the scene, so we were soon at Rockfort Police ... read more

Yesterday, we spent the day being tourists, but not quite in a typical way. No, we didn't spend time hitting up Margaritaville or any of that sort of thing. We went to a sugar factory. The sugar industry is big in Jamaica, and we've spent a lot of the week watching the sugar cane fields burn (as part of the harvesting process, I think?). Yesterday, we got the chance to visit the Frome Sugar Factory in Westmoreland Parish (the same Parish as Petersfield). The tour was quite intense. It's indeed a factory, and it's loud, and it's hot, and there's sugar particles floating in the air everywhere, and it has this rotten-sweet smell about it, like spoiled fruit that might almost still be good enough to eat. We got the full tour of the place, all ... read more
