The Igbo say the place where one wakes up is home. Eyes flipped open to dawn. “My last day” I said to no one. Somehow odd to know the way to school finally only to use this knowledge once. Diagonal across the park, turn right, along the creek, past sheep foraging in the garbage. I passed the old cigar factory, one of the only two factories in the town. Three hombres still sat under the jacaranda tree with "Huelga" placards, (“on strike”). The factory had closed down several months before and they were protesting non-payment of wages. The lucky ones had received half their wages, all paid in cigars. These men simply had nothing better to do and it sort of looked like work. It was overcast, in the sixties, what the gringos called a beautiful ... read more

A rainy Monday afternoon Nothing to do but go to the mall. Avatar had opened a few days before. Good ol’ American high tech escapism. We were tempted, but too tired, to wait for the 3D showing three hours later. We felt like tired, shabby avatars ourselves. Just enough time for American mall junk food. What a treat! I figured I could order while Maureen looked for sushi. Or so I thought. Pointing, in flawless high school Spanish I ordered menu item #2, a double cheese burger. “Uno?” the young lady at the counter asked. “Uhh, si, uno de numero dos,” I replied. “Dos?” “Uhhh, si, numero dos, doble.” She paused, looking at me, like I wasn’t done, so I added, for clarity, “Hamburguesa con queso.” “You want two?” “Uhhhhh….” We looked at each other doubtfully. ... read more

After the final morning at school we went for a baleada lunch at Clarita’s. Already there were the parents of Katie (Maureen’s roommate), and her boyfriend Chris, who teaches in Copan. He recommended we get Juan Carlos as our guide to tour the Mayan ruins. Tourist story #2: Katy’s father had just returned from fly fishing Rio Dulce and was looking forward to trying some river in SE Honduras. He brought special glass flyrods here from Oregon on Taca Airlines. When they changed planes at LAX he was prevented from bringing the rods, though collapsed in their case, on board. “Too long.” “But,” he protested, “They just came here as carryon from Portland.” “Sorry, sir, regulations. Four inches too long.” “OK,” he offered, “I’ll cut four inches off the end and put the reels in ... read more

The route shown starts from the teacher's apartment (green dot), to Maureen's school (fourth yellow dot), then the back way to Catalina's house, then to Maureen's house (end). San Jeronimo Bilingual School In 2004 BECA, an NGO, and a dozen families in the Cofradia founded this bilingual school. See photo of what I called "the compound." BECA stands for Bilingual Education in Central American and it is also the Spanish word for "scholarship." Here's a link to a new video about the school. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TEHqN3CkXk Maureen teaches Pre-K the first level. She was originally assigned to the eighth grade, but her superior Spanish was needed more for the lower grades. She also assists the teacher of the next older class, called “Prepa” and Maureen's is called “kinder.” Maureen shrugged, “Someone got the names reversed at the beginn ... read more

A one hour cab ride, I was left at the central town park in Cofradía. It was hot, maybe 85. The cabbie really didn't want to leave me alone, and seemed worried. I said I would be OK. A small girl approached, asking, "Blah blah blah blah Maureen?" Obviously the answer to that question is “Si!” She walked me across the square to a sewing shop. Her mother gave me a drink and called someone who called someone who called Maureen, who was just about to leave for the airport. We unraveled the miscommunication about my arrival time. She greeted me in ten minutes; the trip begins. The map summarizes our route in town. Regrets, I cannot show labels for points on the route. We actually wandered more than shown. From the square, we stopped for ... read more

Introduction I did not need a vacation; I love my work and my life. My thought was just to visit Maureen on her Christmas break from teaching. The trip was much more. I do want to share my wonder full travel experience and yet I know immediately I cannot. What can I share about a beautiful place you have not seen? I can ramble on about azure skies and vibrant foliage or get all National Geographic on you about native tooth cleaning techniques. Yes, the visuals have a chance; they can be represented by photos or descriptions. How should I describe Atitlan bird calls all day or Cofradian roosters all night, the warmth of country tropical breezes or stench of urban diesel, the buzz of mercados and bus terminals. The sweet aromas of a panadora, the ... read more
