Waiting for Walt
Just before Walt got there. So, Walt is turning the big 3-0 this year! I decided I wanted to do something special for him so I had decided to plan a surprise party. This was BEFORE the ousted president had returned and we started having curfew. My original plan was going to be to take Walt out for dinner on Saturday night and then when we got back from dinner, all my friends and a few of Walt's friends from Comayagua would be in my apartment to yell "Surprise!"
Well, since there was a curfew, I decided that it would be better to do something in the afternoon. Walt was expected to arrive in Tegus anywhere between 2 and 4pm (depending on how long he had to work at the centre). I decided I'd go to the mall around 11am to get supplies and then have everything and everyone ready for when he arrived.
I'd been talking to Bryan and Kenny all week. Both were trying to give excuses to Walt as to why they couldn't go, but had every intention of coming. That plan failed as a friend of theirs offered to give them all a ride to Tegus. Okay, so Walter's friends
surprising him would NOT be part of the surprise anymore. Bryan was still trying to keep me up to date though so I knew that day what was happening. He called me Saturday morning to tell me Walt didn't have to work anymore and they were leaving Comayagua at 9:30am; they'd be in Tegus by about 11. Walt called me with the same info 10 minutes later and I played dumb. I told him I may be kind of busy for awhile at the mall with Libby. His response? "You don't wanna see me?"
GAH! So I called and changed all the plans with everyone. Bryan was going to try to stall him for a bit and I was still going to get stuff to prepare some dips and drinks and things. I called Kallie and she said it was fine to hide everyone at her place at 2pm and then they would go up to the roof where they would surprise him there. perfect.
Walt calls me at 11:30 - they are in Tegus but going for lunch at a friend's house. Nice one Bryan. I get to the mall to get my things, get home and
Oh Canada!
Walt and Juan in my room prepare it all. 1:15 Walt calls to say they've now gone to Kenny's place. They'll be another 30 minutes probably. I frantically call msg everyone to tell them not to arrive at Kallie's any time BEFORE 2, as Walt may be arriving at the same time.
Bryan calls at 2:15. They're gonna be a little longer. I tell him to occupy Walt for at least 30 minutes; I'm changing plans again and having everyone just come to my apartment instead of hiding out at Kallie's since Walt hasn't arrived yet.
Everyone arrives and Walt finally arrives just after 3pm. Streamer and balloons were hung, Cake had candles and everyone jumped out to yell "Surprise!" He had no idea but he was really happy.
The entire afternoon felt like evening, as we started drinking at 3. We had pizza delivered after a little while and by 5:30, people who lived further away had to leave to make it home before the 6pm curfew. Those who lived within walking distance stayed.
At one point in the evening, Walter ran into Josimar - a professional soccer player who asked me if I would tutor him in English (although Pam
has more time so she is actually going to be the one to do it now). He used to play for Walt's favourite team but just got transferred this year. They got talking in the stairwell, I took him some cake and the next thing we knew he was partying with us in my apartment. All Walter's friends were star-struck. He was great though. He even brought up a polo shirt and pair of shorts from his old team as a gift for Walt and his friend.
By 9pm, everyone had WAY too many beers and the boys turned my living room into a disco where they weren't wearing shirts and dancing with belts. lol.
The party ended around midnight. It totally felt like we were back in university at a party. If felt nice to host in my apartment, even if it did mean lots of cleanup afterwards.
Today Walt and his friends helped me clean up, I made everyone breakfast and then the boys were on their way back to Comayagua. Walt thanked me again and again for an amazing birthday. Bryan said he truly seemed to be enjoying himself and was sure it was
a birthday he would never forget.
