Held up in Tegucigalpa
Published: October 28th 2011Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Central » TegucigalpaNote – Apologies but what proceeds isn’t very interesting, however it was 2 days of our trip, and therefore it does need to be documented!! The lack of photos we took here too are few and far between, and therefore there are only 2 snaps of Tegucigalpa, neither of which I imagine will be breathtaking! Our next real stop was to be Granada in Nicaragua, however getting there was going to be the difficult thing. We basically had to get back to the mainland (La Ceiba),from there get a 7 hour bus to Tegucigalpa (the capital of Honduras), stay the night, then get another bus to the capital of Nicaragua, Managua (8 hours by bus), stay the night, and then another bus from there in the morning to Granada. Mission The mission was made even harder ... read more

CSBC Mission Trip
Published: July 18th 2011Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Central » TegucigalpaGood morning everyone. I have finally received some info that I can pass along to everyone. One of the messages I got I was told just how much of a blessing it is for our group to be there. That just proves to us that God is leading them and our church in the right direction. On Saturday they actually got about half of the tile laid in the church. It was a slow process since they are having to bring water in for them to mix grout and thin set. We could not imagine not having water in our church, or at least I couldn’t. The ladies from the team are painting the Sunday school rooms, and I was informed that Leighton Keys is quite the artist. The group got to go church with the ... read more
Okay, so it's not exactly new... I bought a 1999 Honda Civic from one of the teachers who is leaving Honduras. She is moving to Paraguay to teach and no longer needs her car. I've been without a car all year, which was WAY easier in Comayagua because you could walk anywhere, but virtually impossible to do without in Tegus, without paying for taxis to go everywhere. Before I tell you about my car, let me tell you about how cars work down here: *Most of the cars here are cars that were totaled in the States. They get shipped down here and then completely remodeled and sold for WAY more than they're worth *The value of a car does not diminish with the miles or the year. For any car, you are looking at paying ... read more
Roses and Thorns
Published: May 29th 2010Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Central » TegucigalpaSo last night was Kallie's last night in Honduras. She flies out this afternoon. We took my new car (more on that soon!) out for a joy ride and went to a couple of different bars for some celebratory drinks. During drinks, Kallie asked what our best and worst moments of the school-year were. At camp, we do this with our campers every night and call it "Roses and Thorns". We all went around the table and shared ours. Thought more about it this morning (when I couldn't get back to sleep) and thought I'd share... My Thorns (I prefer to end with the rose): * The way things felt with Walter when I first got here in July... the uncertainty of what was happening and where things would end up * The political crisis in ... read more
Found a New Apartment!
Published: May 22nd 2010Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Central » TegucigalpaWalt and I went to a party last Saturday (a week ago today) with a bunch of the teachers from my school. It was at Ana and Ismael's house. It was a "Cinco de Mayo" (Mexican holiday) celebration but about a week after May 5th... Anyways, we had never seen their apartment until that night. As soon as I walked in, I loved it. It has a very large main room with lots of space. They painted one of the walls a deep blue to give life to the otherwise white apartment. The kitchen was huge (about three times the size of our current kitchen) and it had its own washer and dryer. There were two bedrooms (used to be 3 but they knocked out a wall to make a length-wise-long spare bedroom. There were also ... read more
Since my interview on the phone with the American School, they've asked me to direct a musical at the school. With 130 kids auditioned, we decided I had to take all children, so we divided them by grade group and we called it "The Best of Broadway" featuring songs from the musicals Peter Pan, Annie, Oliver!, Moulin Rouge, The Sound of Music, Grease, Wicked, and Bye Bye Birdie. Each group learned 2 musical numbers during separate practices after school. I had a special dance ensemble (composed of 4th and 5th graders) learn additional pieces during lunch hours. I also had some 3rd-5th graders as "transitional actors" reading bits of information between the numbers and providing the opening of the show. It was very much done in the same kind of way as we do musical productions ... read more
Honduras - Tegucigalpa
Published: April 22nd 2010Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Central » TegucigalpaI arrived in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, on Saturday with Gal and Lee and stayed one night in a hotel with them before being picked up by my couchsurfing host, Ligia, the next morning. Ligia was an extremely accomadating host who gave me my own room, a key, and a mobile phone to use. Ligia is the principal of a "school for the rich and famous" in Tegus, speaks excellent English, and is highly political. She filled me in on the political tensions in the country since the constitutional crisis preceeding the general elections in November 2009. The former president, Manuel Zalaya, was alleged to have attempted to change the constitution in order that he could remain in office for a further term, and was then forced into exile by the military who assumed control ... read more
Update and Upcoming Travel!
Published: March 20th 2010Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Central » TegucigalpaCounting down the days until Friday. One more week of school before Semana Santa (Holy Week) and we are off on vacation! THANK GOODNESS! School continues to be frustrating. Our students aren't responding to the school-wide discipline policies. I'm sure it's because there are no consequences at home, but it's hard to motivate 1/2 of our class to do anything. I'm reconciling with the mother who thinks I do nothing to accommodate her son (my hardest case) as she finally realizes I'm not the only one struggling with him. It's to the point where the principal told her the other day that as an administrator who taught for many years SHE'S even at a loss for what to do with this child. The mother didn't like that answer so she went to the superintendent who suggested ... read more
Frustrations as a Teacher... A Rant
Published: March 3rd 2010Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Central » TegucigalpaWarning: This entry is a long rant of me whining and complaining. If you aren't going to feel sorry for me, don't read it ;) Also, it's a private entry so only those signed in may see it. Life as a teacher has been frustrating lately. I'm unsure of whether it's this Country, my school, my current position, or me... I had a breakdown in my principal's office last week. I went to talk about things I needed for the musical (black theatre boxes, curtains, etc.) but instead we got a little off topic and discussed a whole lot more: We discussed the LICE incident and how because of their neglect last time (AND making me feel like I was crazy and my words had no validity) there was another outbreak in my class (AND first ... read more
