Central America Caribbean » Dominica February 22nd 2012

We have comfortably settled into island life and love it. After initially missing all the family and the first couple of weeks of problems and repairs, we have been able to enjoy our surroundings and catch up with friends. So the problems of those first couple of weeks… well the car needed new brake pads and lights to pass its annual inspection… the dishwasher was broken so fixed that… the brakes failed on the car (rear cylinder seal) – on a rather steep winding road, scary… we replaced the broken hinges on our bedroom door… also replaced a broken door handle… the brakes failed on the car again (cylinder seal again)… we got the house phone re-connected… and the brakes failed on the car again (cylinder replacement this time). The car is working fine now but ... read more

Our next destination on Dominica was Grand Fond, high in the mountains. Although it only has a population of 1,200, it is the largest village in the area. In bad weather, the only road in gets blocked. After the 2004 earthquake, sixteen landslides closed the road – food had to be helicoptered in! We were staying with the Lesley family and, at the village school, we met Mrs. Lesley, the headmistress. The school teaches 87 children from 3 to 11 years old and was built by Oxfam. We arrived during the last period of the day and were able to have a good look around and chat to the very lively and friendly children. They tried to teach us a new hop-scotch like game … with little success. The school itself was a bland concrete building ... read more

We are living in a bamboo tree house, in the rain forest on the island of Dominica. The house is set alone on a hill, high above the actual lodge. Up in the house we have a bed, a hammock ,a composting toilet and a large balcony. Below, there is a cold shower! Lizards keep us company and an agouti (a long legged guinea pig) lives underneath the house. But the forest comes to life at night. As the sun sets, the quiet of the day is replaced by the sound of raucous insects, frogs and toads. They sings us to sleep – under a mosquito net, in our little tree house in the middle of nowhere. It is a full moon at the moment and we spend the evenings on our balcony watching the fire ... read more

Waiti-kubuli, “Tall is her body” in Carib (the indigenous peoples of the land), was renamed Dominica when “discovered” by Columbus… surprisingly enough, on a Sunday. Luckily its geography prevented it, for the most part, from the fate of many of the other islands in the Caribbean. With an active volcano and mountainous terrain, the conditions were not conducive to slave-dependent sugar cane crops. And while this island was not completely immune to the woes of colonization, the peoples of Waiti-kubuli were fortunate enough that the rugged mountainous terrain insulated them from many of the all too common woes faced by the tribes of the islands around them. With areas of this small island averaging over 200 inches of rain a year, the landscape is peppered with tremendous waterfalls and 365 rivers winding their way across the ... read more

1/23/12 I am currently 4 hours ahead of California and 3 hours ahead of Colorado. Since the Bahamas we have traveled 785 nautical miles. Waking up today there was much excitement throughout the ship to get off for the first time, at the first port and explore. I packed my towel, snorkel, mask, and underwater camera in my backpack. I grabbed a hat, my money belt and camera, put on some sunscreen and headed up stairs to meet up with Anna Sophia for breakfast and then to go exploring in Roseau. Where we were ported was beautiful! The view off the back deck of the ship was a steep green mountainside with all different colored houses and a steep road built into it. At the very top right hand side of this mountain was some sort ... read more

Last I wrote was a while ago – we were in Bequia – I can’t remember when that was date-wise. I guess I’ve lost that sense of time on the ship now; people speak of time in regards to geographic places, like: “Remember the last time we ran naked with burning palm fronds?” – “When was that?” – “Mangareva.” So where have we been since Bequia . . . hm. Having left the Caribbean a couple days ago and the tropics yesterday (twas a sad day) the islands seem a blurr. After Bequia . . . oh! Dominica! We had a short stop in Dominica which requires MUCH more time to explore beyond the evening and day off I had during our stop there. Dominica is HUGE and LUSH – known for its ecotourism. We luckily ... read more

Somehow this blog from May was never published. So take yourself back to spring and here are our final thoughts before returning from Dominica... There has been lots of rain so our snorkelling trips were delayed due to murky water but we still got out there as much as we could. The Reef Fish book comes out after each trip to check on new fish we have seen. Life at the house is still wonderful, and as trees come into bloom we watch the small colourful birds – including lots of humming birds - darting around. The local Zandoli tree-lizards continue to be a favourite to watch and Andy spends his evenings gazing at the ceiling and our unpaid cleaning staff – the house geckos hunting insects. Son continues to help us with our ever expanding ... read more

Off we headed again on another adventure... this time with some different travel companions (our friends Alice and Bill, as well as Deb and her mom Anna) and on a different cruise line... trying Princess for the first time (because we got a wicked deal and it had great ports)... but the start of the journey just about always starts out the same. Drove to Maine on Saturday, puttered around a bit, had a fairly undelicious supper at Longhorn, and played around on the ipad and read some while everyone else watched hockey playoffs in the hotel room. Headed across the pedway early in the morning to catch our 7am flight to Philadelphia. Philly's airport is one of my least favorite ever (well, the section of Terminal F where we always seem to start out is)... ... read more

Never can you have so much fun with so little effort! Just sit back and let the river take you - this is not an extreme sport! We were taken very good care of by Malin and David from River Tubing Dominica - rivertubingda@hotmail.com - from the tubes being brought down to the river to managing the floating bar (a coolbox with its own tube). Periods of calm drifting and gentle chats with other floaters were broken by bursts of speed along narrower stretches, usually involving bouncing off rocks and disorientating spinning. All this under the canopy of the rainforest without any sign of civilisation. So a couple of hours after leaving Hibiscus Cottages, after much laughing and squeeling, the occasional beer and a long stop at a beach en-route, we hauled our tubes out at ... read more

Sorry we haven't posted any photos for a while - we've been having too much fun!!. Here are a few and we'll sort out a proper update soon... The garden is still coming along nicely. Everything grows so quickly we had to cut back a lot of stuff. It's hard to be drastic but necessary - looks a bit like a bad hair day in parts though!!. Mangos have just finished Arrgghh! but we're still eating our own bananas. We had a day sail with Susie on her sleek modern classic yacht, Spirited Lady. Smiled so much my face ached! We still go snorkelling in the bay. I love searching out the reef fish and getting more images with the little compact camera. Toucarie is just the perfect place to be. We've had a couple of ... read more
