Sunday July 15 - Today is Sam's last day, and everyone is heading out of camp to hang out. He's one of the marine team that is based in camp here. We left around 10am, but it was delayed due to a tire change of a flat tire on one of the three vehicles. Always expect the unexpected. But Andrew and Clive changed the tire quickly and then we were on our way. I drove with the bat girls and pretty much hated the music choice the whole way. The others all drove together in the van. Our first stop was the bat cave. It is along the ocean cliffs, and you have to swim around to it, which lent some excitement. We made our way there, and everyone could pretty much stand on the inside ... read more

Tuesday July 10 - I slept ok last night, and woke up at 5:28, two minutes before my alarm. Just like in real life. I finished my packing and sat down to finish my yogurt for breakfast and make use of the wifi, but my computer would not connect. I was so disappointed. I tried a pathetic amount of times, but it never worked. I admit I may have an addiction. At 6:15 I left to walk over to the ferry terminal. It took less than ten minutes, and there was already a line of people waiting to check in. They opened for business at 6:30am and processed us through. I paid my $33 departure tax (it's $13 in USD), got my passport stamped, and headed to security. I had to take everything out of my ... read more

Saturday July 14 - Today is technically a day off for the bat teams, but Lisa wanted to scout an area near Soufriere, and we all joined. Not much in it for me but a time to leave camp and hopefully a smoothie and some wifi, so I went. I talked to Charlotte about trying to find a time to do the two field trips - whale watching and the vulcanology trip - as well as the Boiling Lake trip on the side with Rob acting as the guide. We would need at least two of us for him to take us up, but he is giving us a good price. It's quite a special part of the island, so I'd love to be able to work in the trip. Charlotte is going to ask if ... read more

Sunday June 24 - (continued from Martinique) Charlotte, the woman organizing the biodiversity surveys in Dominica, picked me up at the ferry and we drove back towards the 3 Rivers Ecolodge where we stay. It took an hour to drive there, but we could not drive the entire way. Last year the island was directly in the path of Hurricane Maria and was quite devastated by the storm. You have to cross two rivers to get into the ecolodge, and the bridges are still out, so we had to walk in. Although I knew this, I did not know exactly what it meant until I saw it. I had to cross a river with my two bags holding onto a rope so I wouldn't fall. In the dark. I changed into my shorts and sports sandals, ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Dominica » Roseau January 25th 2017

Geo: 15.3, -61.39We knew that our dear EYC friends, Andy and Elva, were going to be in Dominica, and through email we had tried to pinpoint a time and place to find them. We didn't know it was going to be as easy as bumping into them when we went into downtown Roseau to check in! I was sitting at an outdoor cafe waiting for Tony to finish at Customs and Immigration, and spotted Andy walking into the cafe! What a fabulous coincidence! We didn't stay in Dominica for very long on this visit, but we did enjoy three days in Roseau, and then a few days in Portsmouth before we jumped up to Les Saintes to pick up our next guest. ... read more

Geo: 15.5688, -61.4555With a broken dinghy engine, we were only going to stay for a few days and carry on to Martinique: the land of plenty-of-boatparts. But we found a Mercury dealer and ordered the parts from Roseau.... read more

Geo: 15.5886, -61.3463Here's a brief recap of what we did in Dominica: On our first full day on Dominica the weather was lousy so we carried umbrellas and explored the village of Calibishie and the area around our cottage. We walked to Hodges Beach, Baptiste Beach, and the Red Rock area.On the second full day we drove across the northern end of the island, stopped and walked down to the Cold Sulpher Springs, and on to the western coast and the Cabrits National Park where we did a bit of hiking. Then drove to the Syndicate Parrot Preserve area before driving back to our cottage. On the last day we stayed out of the car and did a neat ridge walk among the banana tree farms and fields of fresh vegetables with views across the lush ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Dominica » Roseau December 16th 2014

Tuesday December 16th, 2014. Dominica, Lesser Antilles, West Indies. We went for a posh breakfast before disembarking the ship. We had been to Dominica (pronounced Domineeka) before and it is M's favourite. Unfortunately we had docked at Woodbridge Bay about a mile out of town - the prime berth in the city of Roseau being occupied by a German vessel called Aida. Dominica sits between the Leeward and Windward Island groups in the Lesser Antilles. It is 29 miles from north to south and 16 miles from east to west (a land area of almost 300 sq miles) - about 2 x the size of the Isle of Wight. It is the most mountainous and forested island in the Caribbean and is known as the "Nature Island" - probably why it is M's favourite. It has ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Dominica December 13th 2014

DOMINICA Ok we must be mad! Got up at 06.15am to do an hours walking around the deck and more importantly to try and spot the whales that live three miles off the coast of Dominica! Totally unsuccessful!! Not even a dolphin that apparently half of the cruise ship passengers appear to see on a regular basis!! Ah well!! We did, however, spot Jewel of the Seas heading towards Roseau! Now, coincidentally, a few days before we left UK, it transpired that Peter and Wendy, Chris’ cousin from the US were cruising the Caribbean the same time as us and that both our ships were in Dominica on the same day so we had the opportunity to meet up with them! Walked the mile or so to Cafe Coco Rico where we had arranged to meet ... read more
