well we made it to tikal after spending a couple of nights in san ignacio. Tikal is right up with there with some of the most amazing places that I have seen in my life. The spread of buildings involves 6 major temples, the tallest of which shoots into the sky at well over 200 ft. Although the temples are incredible it may be the setting that truly makes Tikal so special. It is crazy to walk through the dense jungle and suddenly.....BAMN there is huge temple in front of you. It just smacks you in the face. Then you travel down the trail and .....BAMN thereĀ“s another one. Monkeys - Tikal is just flush with them. Mostly squirrel monkeys that you see swinging from tree to tree but it is the howlers that you hear. ... read more

Throwing caution to the wind, we decided to cross the border into Belize and make it into Orange Walk in one go. After arriving in Chetumal, on the Mexican side of the border, trying to get a connecting bus to Belize was like an episode of "Its's a Knockout" but the obstacles weren't wearing inflaitable suits making them much harder to spot. Our first opponent was a sketchy information woman who muttered something about a bus leaving from the market place. The second opponent came in the form of a smooth talking money changer who managed to rip off a few people but we thankfully managed to side step him. For opponent 3, see opponent 2 but now in the guise of a shady bus conductor, who was willing to take ticket money from gringos without ... read more

(sorry it's a bit of a long one) Wandering around Belize City, it's surprisingly hard to find anything you want. For example, finding a tourist information place was an hour's quest that eventually failed, all the places having moved countless times in recent years so that not even locals know where they are. Nevertheless, although slightly irritating from a personal perspective, this is a prime example highlighting what a dynamic and vibrant place this small city is, and one that is constantly developing and changing. After spending about 30 hours travelling (and what felt like a similar length of time sleeping once here), from Toronto, through Houston's "we do not take highly to persons joking about any act of security. You will be arrested" airport, I was welcomed into Belize with a huge 'Subway' billboard. At ... read more

Ok so, its been a while since we last talked....so sorry for that but i think that its been a break well deserved from the annoying multi page ramblings of a man most of you cant really remember, and most just know as that annoying guy who never really shuts the hell up.... Anyway, Im in Belize after another summer at camp...never thought i would see that place again, but thankful that i did, turns out that this year was just as good as last despite what people have told me about the aparent second year blues.... people were great the kids were awesome, it didnt rain at all...so i had to do some work which many of you from last year would remember is all i did then also..... From camp we travelled with a ... read more

Sailing is the best decision I've made so far. Started out with breakfast at Herbal Tribe - just a bagel as I suspect that I was mildly hungover. Then up the boat and we were off. We have Sara and Alex (San Diego/Long Beach), John & Terry, Jamie and Philip, Matthew (London), Richard (England) and Thomas (Germany). Good group. Stop 1 was a snorkel in a channel. The guys went spear fishing and came back with a lobster. Apparently there was a manatee, but I didn't see it. Then lunch (chicken and cocounut rice and fruit - so good!) and a nap while we continued on. We were largely unsuccessful with fishing, so we had to buy from fisherman right off of Lighthouse Caye. Was quite a hassle. And as soon as we left them we ... read more

I'm finding my final morning here to be quite sad - I wish I had a month. I'm not at all ready to leave. Well - my feet are ready - I've never had such horrible blisters in my life - at least 3 on each foot. At least I'm getting on a boat where I won't have to wear shoes. Last night found us bar hopping. Janneke, Warren, Alex and I went to the Ocean Side Bar & Grill to meet Barbara. Janneke and I each had a rum runner - huge, fruity, and way too much rum. We played darts, then Janneke, Warren and I went to Herbal Tribe for guacamole and cuba libres. Then rejoined with Alex and Natasha and headed off to the I and I. Plenty of crazy reggae guys, but ... read more

August 19, 2005. We arrive at the ariport in Belize City and order 2 rum drinks to celebrate. They were SO strong! We took a puddle jumper to Ambergris Caye. The hotel was a nice, ocean front suite with a full kitchen. We immediately signed up for diving the next day - 2 local reef dives and 1 night dive. We settle in, take a dip in the ocean and head out for dinner. We ate at a nice restauant on the water. It started to rain so we sat inside but the view was still incredible. Outstanding ceviche and a really tasty blue rum fishbowl drink. We go to bed early in preparation of many dives tomorrow. We wake up in the middle of the night to a tropical storm and have to shut all ... read more

The island life is definitely suiting me well. Got up around 6 am when the guys woke me. We'd all been out to I and I bar the night before (mmm...Belekin Beer!) but Barbara (from Holland) and I went back not long after an island wide power outage at 10:30 pm. It was a hot and muggy night with rain and no fans - tough to pass out. Anyhow, we all grabbed some tea upstairs, then sat outside the tsumani office until they opened at 8 am so we could rent snorkeling equipment. Then Billy (from Atlanta) and I went to snorkel at the spit for a while. Not the best snorkeling ever, but enjoyable nonetheless. Besides fish we saw some cool jellyfish-like urchins, conch and starfish. Billy was always quick to dive down and bring ... read more

New Friends

LAX This is by far my boldest trip yet. One week. No traveling companions. No lodging pre-booked. Tme to see how I do thinking on my feet and just exploring. And relaxing. I can't wait. I think that I've been so busy for the past few years pursuing my career that I haven't bothered to stop and pursue adventure. That being said, 30 is not all that far off, and I need to start accomplishing all the fun, adventurous things I can before life manages to tie me down further. My only real goal on this trip is to experience new things - places, people, foods, activities. I think that Belize holds a lot of promise for that. It's also an opportunity to stretch my social skills and make new friends. And most importantly to renew ... read more

First class bus took us as far as Chetumal on the Mexican/Belize border. Due to a 3 hour wait for the connecting bus to Belize City we transferred to the 2nd Class bus station. Were persuaded to get on an old US school bus (also known by Gringos as chicken buses!!)that would take us as far as Orange Walk for the princely sum of $2 for a 2 hour bus journey!!This price included free Bob Marley and Venga Boys (played at full volume) all the way through northern Belize!! Air conditioning consisted of open windows, refreshments - mango on a stick bought from a street vendor!! Glad we hadnt opted to stay in Orange Walk (as this was going local big time and we werent quite ready for that experience!!). The subsequent chicken bus meant getting ... read more
