So it’s a sad day in Aruba – last snorkels, last turtles, last visit to Linda’s, etc etc. We were at Tres Trapi for turtle hunting by 8:30, and we were very well rewarded. This time we weren’t so systematic, so perhaps we were seeing the same ones over and over, but we certainly thought we saw a dozen, including you know who – Hungry Boy, the gray turtle. We also found 2 flying gurnards (sorry Robin) and a Queen Triggerfish at last. Still no sign of the short-nosed batfish or the frogfish. David was infuriated by one particular family who pestered the turtles, and the boy who swooped in to touch the turtle as it was coming up for air, and just as David was filming. I’ve been known to tell off anyone I see ... read more

With the ocean, you just never know what you’re going to find! We were at Tres Trapi by 8:30 to see the turtles, and while they were not in that very first spot of turtle grass just off the steps, we did eventually see 11 of them, including – yes, you guessed – Hungry Turtle. David even watched a turtle do a big poo. Which he documented, of course. We also saw an eel, a flying gurnard, and a magnificent Spotted Eagle Ray. We were reluctant to get out, but 2 hours later we hauled ourselves up the steps and chatted to a couple from England. And unbelievably, it’s a direct flight from Gatwick on Tui airlines!!! So, if the English family wants to meet us someday here in Aruba, let us know! We want to ... read more

Today was an “iffy” day weatherwise. We awoke early to the sound of rain on the tin roof, but got out the door by 7 am or so, packed with sandwiches and snorkeling equipment, but mainly to go birding in the Salinas (salty shallow waters) up near La Cabana. The rush hour at 7 was nothing like the other day at 8 am either. We got a few photos of the usual water birds, adding a ruddy turnstone and kildeer to the mix (not new birds). We drove up to Arashi beach and saw a lovely collection of Brown Boobies and Pelicans – how clumsy they are on the ground, how majestic in flight. We noticed that they always turned away from the sun as they hit the water. The visibility was poor on that side ... read more

Wow, it is Thursday already!! Guess what we did at 7 am? Jumped up and went birding at the Spanish Lagoon of course. Can’t beat the photo of the Ruby-topaz humming bird taken the other day, but there’s a really cute one of the hummer with a HUGE bare-eyed pigeon on the same branch. You can imagine lots of subtitles for that. And another where he is displaying his lovely red fanned tail. We returned home for a small breakfast and to change into our snorkeling gear – let’s see how the drift looks at Mangel Halto. It was THE BEST ever. Hardly any waves or current and so very clear. We had so much fun just exploring near the entrance to the drift because a local coming out as we entered suggested we go “upstream,” which ... read more

Wednesday Sept 28: While we pray for the people in Florida that are going to be hit today by Hurricane Ian, the weather here is also changeable. We went to the Spanish Lagoon for birding again, around 8, and then came back for breakfast. Still no more humming birds. Then we packed up to drive to the right side of Baby Beach to check out the turtles. This is where we took Tom and Amy, and we have to say – with embarrassment – that after years of maligning Baby Beach for snorkeling, it was very good, especially for the variety of soft corals. I counted 33 different species of fish, including 2 different eels. It’s just that all this is in the very center of the bay, and most people don’t go out more than ... read more

…and we did – eat breakfast outside, that is. (Just checking to see if you'd read yesterday's post.) This enormous mango was ripe, even though it was very hard. It tasted great in our oatmeal. Then we were off to Mangel Halto for the first drift snorkel this year. Yes, the seas were rougher than the calm days we’d seen of it, but not much more so. David did the usual: dropping me off at the “hole in the wall” that the divers use to get outside the rocky reef, and then driving back to Mangel Halto, and walking about 8 minutes back to me. We got in at the usual dock area, and the water felt cold at first, but we soon got used to it. As usual it was sediment-y until after the breakwall ... read more

Time to move out of La Cabana to our next Airbnb, but first…. Last snorkel – perhaps – at the n.e. end of the island, getting in at the Infinity pool as usual. It was nice and clear and we were the only people out there so early. Saw a big green moray eel, but he wouldn’t come out to be photographed. We did see (photo) a couple riding those powered fin boards, or whatever they are called. Amazing balance! We had to check out by 10 am, which was tight. So tight that we when we unpacked at Roxanne’s we realized I’d completely forgotten to empty one of the side drawers, so we had to go back and wait for housekeeping to retrieve the things, which thankfully they had. It included our 2 containers of ... read more

Our last this and that ☹ As all good things come to an end (all bad things do too, of course!) We said goodbye to our Turtles on the N.W. side of the island. We were the first car there, followed by 2 other middle-aged women we chatted to afterwards (I think they were a little concerned for us because we had stayed out there so long!). The visibility was not as good as before the storm, but we spotted 6 turtles. The challenge was that normally we can swim about 20’ apart, and see a good 12’ feet right and left. But today we could only see virtually what was under or in front of our vision. The MOST super find was a FAMILY of flying gurnards - the little one was only about 3” ... read more

We started Sunday with birding at the Spanish Lagoon. It’s easy to get up early because our hostess likes us to keep the outdoor lights on – so the light comes in the windows a bit. Of course we said hello to the burrowing owls, and then stood watch at the flowering cactus to try to catch better photos of the hummingbirds. Then it was off to worship with Ronald from The Kitchen, at the Centro Familiar Hosannah church. We got there in plenty of time, not knowing exactly where it was in the city of Orangestad, or where to park, etc. The entrance area was packed with people having coffee and pastries and even scrambled eggs. Hmmm? And canned praise music was already going – so it was a challenge to understand our Spanish-speaking friends ... read more

It was pouring cats and dogs by 5:45 am, a lovely sound on the tin roof - so no birding or snorkeling this morning. Having our ready-to-go-home Covid test seemed the only alternative. The clinic was up near La Cabana, open from 7 am to 10 pm, and had been packed the other day. But at 8:15 on a rainy Saturday we were the only people there! It was both a throat and nasal test by a nurse, and I count it a real miracle that I didn’t panic – I just warned the nurse that I gag easily and then prayed to relax. And God answered that prayer – the swab wasn’t actually on the tongue but on the side. Phew. The results were guaranteed within 20 hours but we got results around 1 pm. ... read more
