I m writing this from Boedapest on my way back home. Yesterday I had to make a difficult decision. My wife Ditas who is in the USA at the moment visiting friends and family has since over three weeks serious problems with her voice diagnosted as singer nodule. In the end she can hardly talk and medicines give hardly any release. Took the decision to let her come home for treatment and interrupt my journey for the time being. Later this year or early next year I ll try to finish the rest of the rooute uptill Jerusalem. Im on my way back home now and reached tonight Budapest. I had no soup to eat for the last month and this seems a good opportunity to take some real good hungarian goulash soup. ... read more

A rather complicated trip yesterday. Leaving Trieste with the 8.56 to Gorizia. Citybus to station Nova Gorica and finding out that you are in a different EU country. Slovenia. At Nova Gorica I took the train to Jesenice, 90 km 18 stations and two hours further. I had 5 minutes to change the train to Belgrade where I arrived midnight. Slovania for me an unknown country of a great beauty in nature. All shades of green , woods, mountains. The small train fighting his way uo to the mountains. Slovenia looks properous, nice houses well maintained.People who does not look rich but tidy. Croatia looks quite different. At 16,30 there was a passportcontrol and just giving a stamp in the passport what s not so usual anymore in Europe.People look different from Slovenia, more poor and Zagreb ... read more

On my way to Trieste I had to change train at Bologna. In the waiting room I saw a big memorystone with a list of 85 names and ages 3 years old up til 81, victims of an act of terror at Bologna station on August 2nd in 1980. Terror is of all times but as long as we dont ask from our governments 100% security we will always be able to survive. They were busy in the waitingroom preparing probably a tv programm by interviewing people and filming the memorystone. The makers of the programm were all younger than born in 1980. On the stations in Italy you see a lot of police and every now and than soldiers on patrol. Even inside the trains on the mainlines you see every now and than police walking ... read more

Travelling through Italy you see compared to a few years ago an amazing number of security camera s. Probably Italy is competing with UK who is still EU champion. As in UK criminal rate will drop considerably by this action for within short time you need so many good guys to watch and check out the videos that there will be less bad guys automaticcally. Arrived yesterday with an delay of 6 hours in Rimini. Starting my travel in Catania with 10 minutes delay and building up after Messina with hours in the middle of nowhere. My scheduled arrival in Rimini was 9.30 am and I arrived 15.35 pm. In Messina the train was loaded on the ferry. Left and right on the underdeck 4 waggons. Took some time but in the end it works. Met ... read more

I never saw so may Smart cars in any European country than in Italy.Supposing there are also a lot of them on the mainland of Italy for sure on the islands Sardinia and Sicily it s a lot. The Italians say it s for easy parking. But why only Italy sees this as a soltution? Other countries solve the problem by using bigger cars and building more parking lots. Had dinner yesterday in Caffe del Duomo. A good restaurant with hundreds of diffrent wines, mostly Sicilian and a handwritten wine list of over 25 pages, so say 15 per page than you know the assortment. Price range between euro 8,50 and euro 500 per bottle. Sicilian wines are actually very good. When I asked for an expresso the question is an Italian or an American espresso. ... read more

Went yesterday in the morning to the old capital Mdina and in the afternoon again Valletta Impression of Malta - Their unknown wine is very good and unbelievable cheap - They threat beer as in England - They drive on the leftside of the road but since everybody is doing it its no problem - One of their export products are potatoes - 500 public busses owned by 500 independent drivers somebody told me. Still a working schedule - Valletta another Unesco world heritage site. Real historic looking and people still living in the citadel - In the churches hundreds of tombstones of the Maltezer knights who were living here for centuries - ... read more

Maria Dolores is her name and it is the catamaran ferry that brought me from Pozzallo to Malta. It is a young and sexy ferry and goes fast. In two hours she can do the distance of approx 100 km. To catch wednesday my train to Saracusa she should do it in the promised 1,5 hours otherwise I ll have to wait a few hours on the station. Arrived at Malta 12 o clock midnight took a taxi to Sliema where hotel Fortina is. The taxi driver asked the old or the new Fortina. I told him of course the new one and I was right. However the new one , also the nightprter was very proud of the new one ,looks like 20 years old. I checked first the possibillities for the Laundry. Yes. They ... read more

Saturday evening I arrived in Pozzallo. 250 km from Palermo, 12 hours incl 6 hours waiting at empty stations and 4 trains. Pozzallo station is small, empty and far from the village. I asked an old lady who arrived also by train if she knew my hotel Villa Margherita. She did not. If there were any taxis .Not at the station. Than she said something about machina and invited me in her old, dirty car. The lady only slightly older than her car started driving.Did not find it. Went to a travelagency who knew but was unable to get an taxi.Too late its already 8,30 pm.The lady wanted to bring me and on directions of the agency girl we did find it. The charm of an old man or the goodness of an even older lady? In ... read more

Clodia was the name of the ferry who brought me from Cagliari to Napoli with a delay of 2,5 hours. Clodia has been beautifull probably in her youth , over 50 years ago,but was too big and old now for the few passengers.Only the garage fully loaded with trucks was important for her. To reach Clodia as pedistrian you hald to walk under a terrible sun and avoid the truck traffick that was every where in the port. The sleeping chair I could choose was one that could carry my weight and was not too noisy. Before I went to the ferry I ate in the wrong restaurant also tables in the street next to the restaurant with the baldheaded waiter. Ordered Spaghetti carbonara and got something that looked like it but had some strange black ... read more

In my early previous life I had a boss called Mike. When we were travelling and breakfast was included the roomrate he always told me ate as much as you can. Good chanche we can skip the lunch and safe a bit. It took about 35 years before I really practised his wise lessons but every now and than when breakfast is really good and not too early I do it. Took the hop on hop of touristic bus this morning and found out Cagliari is really a nice looking town. The guide showed also the football stadium and told that everybody probably knew how good the team have been in the early 70th of last century. She told it if happened yesterday. The old walled city is on top of a mountain . So a ... read more
