8/9/08 Saturday was a great day! It was super busy and fun and we met a bunch of new people. We went to an Expat coffee across the street in the mall. I read about it on the Shanghai Expat website and it turned out to be a great time. We got there about 11 and hung out for a while chatting with various people Later, as is part of this group's tradition, we all went to lunch upstairs at another restaurant. This coffee is held every Saturday and I imagine we'll go quite often. It is a social networking group for Expats. We chatted with other people and grilled the more experienced Expats for tips and tricks on living in Shanghai. We met a family from England who had just arrived in Shanghai Thursday (as ... read more

Finally! The big day arrived here in China. Our day was pretty standard, we went to the park and explored some paths. Nathan found and picked up a kitten (I screamed, NO! and poured sanitizer all over him)...makes me sound like a freak, but makes for a good story so I'll share anyway. He then found a frog, which he didn't grab and we all stared at it for a while. We went on a couple rides and I bought tickets with my patent-pending charade-like communication skills. We were the only ones on the roller coaster (which goes around the track an exhilarating 1 time). I realized after we got off the ride and started walking away that I lost my umbrella on that ride. We went back and sure enough it was below the tracks. ... read more

Thursday, 8/7/08 continued...Mark went to the American Embassy first thing this morning and got more pages added to his passport. He said they treated him like a VIP (since he's American) and he got to cut the line and he was helped right away. He called me and asked me to meet him at a Metro stop near Jessie's office and she would go with us to the visa office. We did indeed do a total repeat of yesterday's journey to the visa office. This time, it went better and Mark and the kids should have residency visas next Thursday morning. Of course, nothing is ever easy as we've learned...and Mark has to leave for the airport after picking up his visa. We'll probably all need to go back since I don't want him taking the ... read more

Wednesday, 8/6/08 Today, I took the kids on the Metro to meet Mark. We made a wrong turn somehow when we went in the underground walkway to get to the station, but we retraced our steps and were able to find it. This underground area is pretty cool. There are lots of shops and restaurants and it's way cooler (meaning less hot) than walking to the train outside. We have no end to the shopping and restaurant options. Seriously, it is a little over the top! I got Nathan's ticket (that elusive transit card stand was closed when we got there) and Emily did her limbo under the turnstile. We got on the right train the first time and met Mark and Jiyi, who works with Mark, for lunch. We went to a great food court ... read more

I'm writing some of this on Tuesday afternoon so I don't forget what happened today. It was a big day for me. I took the kids out to lunch by myself. It was really hard...literally nobody spoke English but I did it. We strolled around the mall next door and then went over to Cloud Nine Mall (the big one with the grocery store across the street from our place). We saw signs for a few stores that are coming soon including a Toys R Us and some other store with a gigantic picture of Barbie. Kids were feeling good..and then we saw it. The Lego store. Right there in our very own mall. Nathan was speechless. He went in to price the various items. There's no deal to be had when it comes to the ... read more

Mark has previously shared his health exam experience (see Mark's first post from Shanghai entry) so I won't describe the experience in detail. His account was accurate and my experience was similar in terms of the steps and the process. I will share the few differences I experienced. I was expecting it would be somewhat different as a woman--just thinking about the process Mark described. Sure enough, it was. For example, I had to undress from the waste up (including bra) and wear a robe. I was not too happy to hear I had to take off the bra, but figured it might just be due to the chest x-ray I knew I had to have. Turns out, I had to open the old robe a couple times to random Chinese medical professionals who listened to ... read more

We spent our first night at our apartment and it was a little bumpy. We didn't execute our coffee-for-the-boy strategy and he seemed to rally until about 4...and then we lost him again. Emily joined him in snooze land soon after. The kids fell asleep in the afternoon and didn't wake up again until 1 am for Nathan and 3 am for Emily. We ended up with 4 in our bed at one point and that was less than cozy. The bed is a double...not even a queen! We all slept together at the hotel most nights too, since there was really only 1 bed, a chair and a small sofa. So, I was really looking forward to separate beds last night. My bed was so hard I can't begin to explain the discomfort. Mark and ... read more

Nathan and I are reporting on yesterday's events together. It's 4am and Nathan has been up almost the entire night. He had a solid (too-long) nap yesterday afternoon....and we had a tough time getting him to stay awake through dinner. In order to solve this problem, we plan to order a mocha at breakfast and perhaps a cappuccino at lunch. Desperate times call for desperate measures! This boy has to stay up an entire day somehow or we'll be night dwellers for 2 years. Emily, Mark, and I (until today when I got up at 4 with Nathan) are adjusting quite well to the time change. I guess we all have our own time line for the clock adjustment. We'll get there. Yesterday was another very busy day. We spent much of it at the apartment ... read more

Saturday 8/2/08 I slept until 5am today..so I am adjusting to the change. I did sleep a few times yesterday (in cabs, at hotel after a crazy day of activity) but I went to bed at 9:30pm and got up at 5am. Yesterday was very busy. We had a slow start with breakfast at the hotel. As with all our previous Shanghai hotels, the breakfasts are great. Big international buffet of many choices. The kids were willing to try a few new things, like this extremely salty egg that made us all pucker and wince. They also had a lot of familiar options like french toast, sausage and bacon. After breakfast, the kids and I took a walk so Mark could make a business call. I used my no crossing, only left turns strategy to avoid ... read more

It's 4am here, and as usual I am up and unable to sleep--was my habit last trip to China. This time, however, I have a companion awake with me. Nathan agreed to share some of his first thoughts with everyone. I'm taking transcription, but these are his words. Hi. When we were walking around last night, I saw everything you could see in America. I saw a man with a very small cage for a very big dog at the airport. I saw a lot of police officers at the airport. Surprisingly, when we walked outside at the airport, I saw very few cars but many taxis and buses. On our way to the hotel from the airport I saw lots of bicycles and pedestrians. It seemed like everyone was avoiding driving cars. I noticed there ... read more
