June 2nd. We are leaving for the airport at about 1pm. It's funny, we fly out of Shanghai at 4 pm on Monday, and land in Chicago at about 4:00pm Monday. A time machine of sorts--of course, we do have to sit in a seat for over 13 hours for the time machine magic to occur. I will keep posting when I get home. I want to capture my entire journey, which includes the prep and goodbyes we all have to go through to come back here in August. This test run was great, but the real deal is for much longer chunks of time. Last night was so great, I have to share a few details. We went to wine time at the hotel--a daily ritual here at Hotel Jia. Who passes up free wine ... read more

June 1. We are coming back in 2 months, so I don't feel that I wish we didn't have to leave feeling. I will be back very soon. Tons to see and do in Shanghai, and of course all the places we want to visit while in China/Asia. We shopped today and went to many areas of the city to do that shopping. We did do some haggling for beads/stones per my sister, Laura's request. I will see how well we did when she gets a look at the goods. It was hard. They tell you a price by showing it to you on a big calculator. You react and say it's too much (“Tai Gui le” pronounced “Tai (as in ‘Tai’land) Gway lar” and you are expected to counter with your offer. So you type ... read more

Saturday, May 31. We got an early start with Lina and Zoe (the American versions of their names, we later learned). We were hesitant to go out again since we had seen better places the afternoon before. However, we felt like we couldn't really pass up an opportunity to see more places in case one was "it". We have seen many places we like up to this point, but they all have 1 or 2 issues. One bedroom is much smaller, the kitchen is a little funky, there is no bathtub in the apartment. Stuff like that. At the end of the searching, we had settled on 2 places. 1 is very near Mark's office in Jing'An. We saw lots of kids, it had a pool and gym (iinclided in the price). The downside is it ... read more

Friday, May 30th. Today was intended to be pick an apartment day, but we have not quite gotten to a final decision. We have decided on SCIS as the school, and will work through the application when I am back home. The apartment decision has not come as easily, however. We have seen so many places with such a range of features, that we have a hard time remembering which is which. We have also realized that location is probably more important than a jacuzzi tub (though it pains me to say this). Mark cannot have a 2 hour commute. He did that back when we had our first apartment (no kids) and he traveled to Batavia every day for 2 years. It was torture. So, we must live near a Metro, for his sanity and ... read more

Thursday, May 29th. Today we talked to the family via Skype. It was great to talk to everyone, but we are getting more and more homesick and can't wait to see the kids in a few days! This adventure will be so much better when the full cast of characters is in Shanghai. More and more, I am certain the kids will have an amazing time here. It's such a vibrant city. There are a lot of comforts from home, but we will also learn so much about a new culture. We were out looking at apartments (together this time) with a new realtor named Vi'an. We had assumed this was a female name. Oops. Not so much. Vi'an showed us less apartments than we saw yesterday, but they were almost entirely superior to those we ... read more

Today (Wednesday, May 28) I'm awake after another huge nap. I have started a bad habit with sleep that may continue. The funny thing is I never nap at home. I think I am just not fully adjusting to the time change--which is fine since I am going to be adjusting back in a few days. I slept through dinner for the second day in a row, so I can't share any fabulous dinner stories...much to my dismay. I did have a good breakfast and lunch today. We ate lunch at a fun food court that reminded me of the one at Water Tower in Chicago. You load a card with money, and then use it as a debit card to buy anything in the place. It's huge and has all sorts of stations. Mark got ... read more

Tuesday, May 27th The first school we saw today was Yew Chung International School (YCIS). We had heard good things about this school, and it has more Chinese as part of the curriculum. They say it's about 30% Chinese, 70% English as far as how the classes are taught. The classes are a bit larger (22-25) but they have a native English speaking teacher and a Chinese speaker in each class. They are a team, and are both qualified teachers, but the math and English lessons are taught by the native English speaking teacher. The Chinese teacher teaches Chinese language, reading and writing as well as Chinese culture. This school spoke much more about providing a cultural education and not just language. We both really liked that. The kids would be at different campuses if we ... read more

Monday, May 26th. Happy Birthday, Grandma Slaven! (It's actually Tuesday at 5am here. I'm finding that it works into my crazy early wakeup schedule to write on the blog first thing). I keep forgetting to mention how great our hotels are. The first--Renaissance--was fab. Great area, amazing gym, and the breakfast was also wonderful. We had breakfast there on our last day (Monday morning) as we had 3 schools to visit. The breakfast was a big buffet with both Chinese and American options. We went for the Asian options and had some dim sum, as well as some great noodles in broth with veggies. Good choice as it turned out--that would be our 1 meal til dinner! Second hotel is in Hongqiao, where we plan to live. We'll be here til Friday. It's a Sheraton and ... read more

Today we had such a better day. We got some solid sleep, which helped. I woke up at 4:30am and spent some time figuring out my blog issues, but later in the day we got a nice, big nap (and I'm not usually a napper!). We started the day walking to Yuyuan Gardens which is really close to our hotel. The doorman told us to walk there via a sketchy alley, but we figured he would not send us into danger, so we went down this alley with little homes, laundry hanging, people sitting outside and eating, and we just meandered by. The thing about being white in China--there's just no way to blend into a crowd. We are like a flashing neon sign. Street peddlers are all over us all the time, and we just ... read more

So this is my 3rd attempt to set up a blog from Shanghai. I will try not to view this as anything more than difficult and I know it's not personal...but this site is public and really targets travelers, so I hope I don't get any mean emails from strangers saying it's boring! We will eventually travel outside of Shanghai, but my purpose is to share my adventures within Shanghai as we plan to move here in August. Here is the scoop from our first day here (5/24/08) The jouney Hardly the roughing it experience I had prepared myself for. Mark got us upgraded to Business Class, but didn’t tell me. When we go to the airport, I nervously inquired as to the remote possibility of an upgrade, and the women behind the counter said we ... read more
