After three long days of riding, both Pat and I are feeling wiped out! The highways were especially treacherous around Montreal and it didn't help that we hit bad weather that had us taking our rain gear off and on continuously as the heat made it sweltering to wear. With Pat being an experienced and confident rider, I trusted him completely, but my stomach was in knots off and on with erratic drivers around us continuously. Would we return to Nfld? Absolutely! It would be nice to explore more around St Anthony (north part of the island near L'anse aux Meadows) and Labrador too. Avoiding bug season is essential so perhaps spring or fall might be better. We spent too little time around St John's - for the oldest city in North America, it has so ... read more

We arrived at Pat's sister and hubby's place around noon today. (Breda and Adrian). I am thankful we were able to stay with them a day earlier than planned. We were able to get a spot on the midnite ferry that was running on time! No sleep of course so we are both feeling very tired tonite. Never did camp in Springdale, it was wet and cold and we took a room at a local inn. The next day we travelled back toward our ferry rendezvous in Port aux Basque. Passed Marble Mountain and Cornerbrook. The mountains are rising up around us again and I find myself craning my neck up looking for eagles, hawks and other birds. We explored a peninsula further south west called "French Ancestors Route". Picked up supplies in Stevenville, the biggest ... read more

Left St John's after getting our front tire replaced and made our camp Monday nite (August 9th) in Green's Harbour. It rained overnite but we were able to dismantle camp okay. Next night's stop was in Bonavista - the lighthouse is past the town, on winding hills, moving amongst many tourists (like ourselves). Watching the whales frolic in the bay was a nice highlight and we shared the binoculars with those around us so they too could enjoy! Encountered rain leaving Bonavista area and right now we are in Gander getting supplies. Plan to camp in the Springdale area tonite. Unable to get any pics on the blog right now as I am working on a Chamber of Commerce computer - no access. We have encountered red squirrels, a bald eagle, hawks, rabbits, but no new ... read more

Can't seem to find the right location when doing the blog!! Just an update, using the computer in the hotel where we decided to take a nite off from camping, in Marystown. Nixed the idea of visiting France. Weather foggy, with drizzle and need to take a break! Have uploaded some new pics (check them out). Also have calculated that we have done over 2500 miles to date. Yes, the butts are getting a little sore now!! See you again soon! ****Me again. I am at a Human Resources office in St John's, using their computer, but it won't let me create a new entry - will add to the one before this. It is now Monday August 9th. Down the road, at the Honda dealership is our motorcycle, getting a new front tire. Sat nite ... read more

Well not quite at Twillingate......but we spent last nite in Lewisporte, south of it. I am sitting at the Gander Chamber of Commerce (which doubles as the local employment centre) updating the blog. Pat is off looking for an electronics place to get the laptop looked at. We left Tuesday morning for the Viking area of L'anse aux Meadows. It is currently under construction so there is no admission charge (yay!) They have kept it simple, yet realistic of how it was so many years ago when Vikings ruled this part of the land. We walked around (avoided the large tour groups), checked out the replica house and hiked around the boardwalk. Ready to hit the road again before noon. Yes, the black flies found us again! As we headed south we had sightings of 4 ... read more

Took a bit of a detour on Sunday August 1st. Decided to go on standby for ferry to Labrador (actually Quebec, but Labrador is just down the road). An hour and a half ride on a really old ship, kept eyes peeled for icebergs and whales. The bugs were ferocious and we decided to stay in Red Bay at a refurbished fishing hut at a lodge, phenomenal view. Fog settled in during the evening making it unlikely to view the supposed 100 ft iceberg spotted further out and drifting this way. Fish and chips were divine and Pat keeps fishing (bought head net) to try and catch our supper but no luck yet! Labrador is a stark beauty, reminds me of a green, lush Connemarra (sp?) in Ireland. Very rocky, few trees, they look almost stunted. ... read more

Well not quite at Saint Anthony, I am at the Ferry terminal at Saint Barbe. Pat is checking out us going over to Labrador. Let me back up a few days......After arriving at Port aux Basques on the ferry from N.S. on Fri July 30th, we gased up and headed north. Saw a dead moose at the side of the road. Feeling pretty bagged after so little sleep, but wanted to get as far north as we could, being a long wknd. The mountains going north reminded me of the pitons on St Lucia. Tall and pointy, but filled with trees right up to the top pretty well (whereas the pitons are rock). Stopped in Cornerbrook for gas, snack and supplies. Beautiful town set up high with lots of stores and selections. Gross Morne National Park ... read more

We spent the last couple of days relaxing, catching up and feeding our faces at Breda and Adrian's gorgeous home in Truro, N.S. Great timing to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary and Pat's 61st birthday. Pat decided to purchase an air mattress, seems the thin self-inflating foam just doesn't cut it this time out! I picked up some heavy socks and of course batteries to fill two air mattresses! Pat said he could "smell" the ocean in Sackville, does that man have a nose or what! On our anniversary, sunny, hot day, we all piled into Adrian's truck (Breda, Adrian, Martin (Adrian's brother and wife Sally) and Pat and I). Drove over to see "Fox Harbour" where Ron Joyce of Tim Horton fame has his luxurious home, had lunch in Wallace and checked out the Josh ... read more

The first two days have gone quickly. The temperature continues to drop. We are both blasting ourselves for forgetting certain things, oh well! Mileage the first day was 690 km! Keeners we are - our campsite on the north bank of the St Lawrence in Lanoraie, Que. had a gorgeous view of the full moon to boot! Has it been one year since we spent this much time together on a bike? Without an intercom system we are getting familiar once again with the hand and directional signals in which to communicate with. Many, many Spyders or 3 wheeler motorcycles on the highway. Day 2 we drove 594 km to Grand Falls, the rain threatening and teasing at times from an angry looking sky. Put on my wet geat to keep warm! I find the wind ... read more

With such a beautiful backyard to enjoy and delight in, I am feeling somewhat torn about our adventure versus making the most of our lush, relaxing backyard. Carpe Diem I say, (or seize the day) because the factors that are enabling us to make the most of this trip may not be quite like this again. ... read more
