When the gates of Bakun Dam closed and water levels on Rajang River fell dramatically, panic set in up and down the river and even spread to the Sarawak Tourism Department. Was the Rajang finished as a tourism attraction, is there another river to direct tourists, will there be no more access through Pelagus Rapids, will schools need to close because students cant get to them. All this on top of the unmitigated man made disaster of the recent logjam - due to uncontrolled logging - which only served to highlight the plundering of the river If there is an alternative river to put a tourist boat on in Sarawak other than the Rajang, it can only be the Baram, near border with Brunei. So it was to Miri I headed to check out what the ... read more

Needed a break for Christmas, had to get out of Sibu and find a beach. So we headed off to Ko Lanta on Air Asia flights. First stop KL to do some Christmas shopping and then on to Haadyai. From airport to van terminal and van to Trang and a quick change to Ko Lanta - too easy Surprised to see Ko Lanta has gone upmarket. Years ago, the guide books used to warn that you may not be able to buy alcohol here. Blimey how things have changed. Arrived lateish on first night so settled for cheap hotel on waterfront in Ban Saladin. The toilet bowl collapsed but at 450 baht a night, what can you expect. Next day, hired a motorbike and rode down to Waterfall Bay only to find its now a 5 ... read more

Flew on super cheap Air Asia flight from KL to Banda Aceh for a Valentine's Day getaway. Found Aceh province to be much more developed than I expected - good roads, clean, lot of building activity but one major disappointment- though not unexpected - no alcohol. The only place I could get a beer in Banda was upstairs at Tropicana Seafood Restaurant - expensive though at 30,000 rupiah a can. You have to try Mee Aceh when in this part of Indonesia - yummy. There are 3 traveler hotels in a row near centre of town - the Hotel Medan is the pick but dearest, though definitely worth the extra for aircon and hot water + breakfast One night in Banda and then becak to port for ferry to Pulau Wei. There were a number of ... read more

"Are you ready to see Paris" I asked my wife as the we alighted at St Denis metro and walked to the escalator to the street. She hadn't been that over awed with the ride in from Charles de Gaulle, so this was to be the moment when Paris had to hit home. I went up first with the camera ready to catch the look on her face as she entered the City of Light for the first time. The expression on her face told it all. Paris in all its inherent charm greeted her in St Denis - stylishly dressed coffee sippers bathed in morning sunshine, historic architecture, cast iron Metro signage, people hurrying, car horns sounding, energy abounding - we are in Paris. Sitting at the cafe, ordering a 1664 (for me) and an ... read more

Boats, heaps of boats - ships really, container ships. Looking down on Hong Kong harbour from one of the island flyover bridges on freeway from airport to town, the number of boats and containers stacked high at the wharves was impressive - even more so than Singapore. Both cities are similar but Singapore is boring, Hong Kong though has a pulse - mountains too and China as the backdrop. Into the tunnel and soon we spill out onto Hennessy Road running parallel to the waterfront on Hong Kong island - the centre of town, or the universe if you are a Hong Kong resident. My eyes follow street signs, trying to pick up ones that will tell me I'm in Wanchai - the bus driver helps and soon we alight on the pavement. No space anywhere ... read more

The hair at the back of my head stood up, in the trees above me was this large orange haired gentleman of the forest, swinging carelessly from tree to tree, rustling the branches wildly as he made his way in an airborne manner down the hill. The adrenalin coursed through me for here in total visual was what I had hoped to see - a wild orangutan in his natural habitat. My son managed a photo - not sure how he did that, because I was just transfixed, even though a camera was clutched firmly in my hand. We were on Kubang Hill in Gunung Palung National Park, in Indonesia's Kalimantan Barat province. This location is one of the very few places where its possible to see orangutan in the wild. There is another location in ... read more

You should never put too much faith in the advertising. In seeking the perfect beach escape, I had already been to Boracay and it topped the list, subjugating Railay (or Phra Nang as I remember this idyllic spot before the developers following backpackers took over) to 2nd, even 3rd behind Phi Phi. So when I saw the photos and write ups on Bantayan, I just had to go there, thinking it might be the next one. Boracay bounces with light - the turquoise blue water sparkles in the morning sun; the sand is white and so so smooth and soft. There are bars, shops, restaurants, all ranges of accommodation and people sauntering around on a sun and sex filled beach holiday. Its pretty perfect - cars don't spoil the beach scene and you can grab a ... read more

Kuching attracts its fair share of visitors looking for a Borneo adventure. But I wonder how many go home disappointed. It's not that the city isn't attractive - it is and it appeals to a lot of people with its historic waterfront (somewhat now dominated by the new Dun), its array of restaurants and bars along Padungan. luxury and boutique hotels like Pullman, Basaga and Limetree and the general friendly ambiance of a small, purring city. Yet the name Sarawak conjures up a jungle and wildlife experience - an adventure holiday. Apart from short day trips out of town to see the orangutan feeding at Semenggoh or the proboscis monkeys at Bako National Park, where do visitors to Kuching go for that wildlife, jungle experience. They are offered Batang Ai and a longboat trip on the ... read more

Flew into Clark Field on an Air Asia flight from Kota Kinabalu - runway after runway greet you as you taxi to the small and simple budget airline terminal building. You can only wonder how the airfield must have thrived with activity during the Vietnam War years with fighter jets and bombers departing and returning on one of those wasteful and misguided American imperial forays to deliver democracy by terror. To get into Angeles from Clark without having to pay an exorbitant fee, walk to the exit gate of terminal area. You are still within Clark but jeepneys ply the access road here and for around 10 pesos + or - you can flag one down and get into town - or should I say Fields Avenue. Whilst the airfield has long dimmed, the sex industry ... read more

There are many places that conjure up elements of fantasy and are high on my list of must visit destinations. One such place has always been Zamboanga and a room at the Lantaka Hotel with a view out into the foreboding Sulu Sea. So, when I decided to celebrate a big O birthday on Boracay, I mapped out a journey from Borneo to Zamboanga and through the Philippines, taking in Boracay and somehow finding my way on to Manila. A lot of people tried to talk me out of it, even my travelling partner, and advise me not to go anywhere near Zamboanga - too dangerous, you should fly. But I'm a persistent bugger and the only flying I was going to do was a flight back from Clark airfield at Angeles City to Kota Kinabalu. ... read more
