Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui January 29th 2013

Moving off from Nakhon Sri, and onto what ought to be the highlight of this leg of my Thai escapade - the beautiful Gulf island of Koh Samui. I'd first heard about this place over 10 years ago, when a good friend of mine raved about it after having been there for a holiday with his navy chums. He described the island as Paradise on earth, so needless to say, after over a decade of anticipation, my expectations were high. And I'm glad to report that, while Paradise is a strong word to use, Samui ultimately didn't disappoint. Staying at the busy Chaweng area at the Kluaymay Guesthouse, my first impressions of the beach itself were inevitably in comparison to that of the other beach resort I'd just came from, namely Cenang in Langkawi. In that ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Southern Thailand » Nakhon Si Thammarat January 21st 2013

Continuing northwards, it was a 4h local bus ride to Nakhon Si Thammarat, the provincial capital, and second largest city in the south. It's right on the highway to the ferry jump-off point to Koh Samui (my next intended destination), so it seemed like a good place to drop by for a couple of days. Considering its location en route to the tourist and backpacker mecca that is Koh Samui, it's quite surprising how few tourists actually stop here. During my two days here, I barely counted a handful of falangs. And it's a pity too, as the city houses the impressive Wat Phra Mahatat, a sizeable temple and stupa complex that houses a Buddha tooth and other relics. And of course it offers perhaps a more authentic look at typical Thai life in the secondary ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Southern Thailand » Hat Yai January 20th 2013

After a rather lengthy 7h sequence of taxi, ferry, sawngthaew, local bus, and lastly motorcyle ride, I finally marked my return to the Land of Smiles with my arrival in Hat Yai, the fourth-largest city in the country, and arguably the commercial heart of the Southern provinces. As a major transport hub, Hat Yai sees hordes of tourists and businessmen from neighbouring Malaysia daily, and walking around the downtown area, it almost seems like I hear more of the Malaysian-Chinese dialects (Mandarin, Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese) being spoken than Thai itself! On several occasions I was greeted by vendors in those dialects, rather than Thai. Quite clearly the Chinese diaspora has had a significant influence here over the years. Yet this didn't come as a particular surprise to me. I'd known my Chinese grandparents had a ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Kedah & Perlis » Pulau Langkawi January 20th 2013

LP warned that my next stop might ultimately take longer than I'd planned, and they were right. The book recounted the experiences of backpackers who'd originally planned to stay at Langkawi for a few days, which eventually morphed into weeks, and even longer for some. I was no exception. Having originally set aside three days for this sojourn, I couldn't resist extending just one extra day in this island paradise, and this being my last stop in the country, thus postponing my inevitable departure from the land of roti canai. Even bigger than Penang itself, Langkawi is actually a collection of a total of 99 islands, belonging to Malaysia's northern-most state of Kedah, bordering the deep Islamic southern Thailand provinces. You would think that 99 idyllic verdant islets set in crystal blue waters would in no ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town January 12th 2013

Next stop, Georgetown in the island state of Penang. a place that I have to say I'm not exactly new to. Not one bit. You see, this is my parents' hometown, and my grandma along with other members of my extended family live here, so suffice to say I've been here the odd occasion or so i.e. almost every year since I was a kid! But as far as I remember, this was the first time I'd arrived alone at the bus terminal, and made my way to my grandma's house alone. In the past I'd either arrive with my family, or an enthusiastic uncle/ auntie/ cousin would be waiting to pick me up at the airport. This time, I'd intentionally arrived unannounced, just to see what it would be like, as if I were arriving ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cameron Highlands January 10th 2013

A quick 2h bus ride later, and I was in Tanah Rata, one of the townships of the Cameron Highlands. This area was established as a hill station by the British during the colonial days, and to this day preserves its holiday/ retreat feel, with the ever-pleasantly cool climate and fresh mountain air. It's certainly no hidden gem though, and has entertained many a vacationeer for the better half of the last century. As LP puts it, it's "very much on the banana pancake trail". It's another one of those places that most Singaporeans would have visited in their youths, but this was my first time here. What can I say, better late than never! Apart from its famous tea plantations, apiaries and strawberry and butterfly farms, Cameron Highlands is also the location of the big ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Perak » Ipoh January 7th 2013

After the lovely start to the trip at Melaka, my next stop after a 5h bus ride was a quick one at the less pretty, and more unassuming city of Ipoh in the state of Perak, in the Central/ West part of Peninsular Malaysia. This city was historically built on its famous tin mines and smelters, and was apparently at one point in time in its rich history, one of the wealthiest cities in Southeast Asia. Somewhat sadly, those past glories seem to be long gone, but the city nevertheless still seems to retain a interesting and balanced mix of colonial heritage and edgy Malaysian reality. You know you're off the tourist track when people no longer speak to you in English by default. It's almost surely Bahasa Melayu first here in Ipoh, until they realise ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Melaka » Melaka City January 7th 2013

After three weeks resting back home, I'm finally back on the road again! This time I'm starting Southeast Asian Part Deux by heading up north by bus into Peninsular Malaysia. The plan is to keep heading north overland until I finally hit Bangkok again, where I intend to spend some time continuing my Thai lessons. Anyway, first stop, Melaka! A pretty little Unesco World Heritage city in Southwest Peninsular Malaysia. I was almost ashamed when I told my friends I'd never been there before. It's one of those places that almost all Singaporeans go when they're young, to sample their famous Chicken Rice Balls, since it's just about a 3-4h ride away. Alas I never had the privilege of visiting this part of our northern neighbours when I was little, so this stop kinda fulfilled that ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Johor » Mersing January 6th 2013

And this was my mini pre-Xmas fishing trip cum one-day KL getaway, with a few of my friends (YK, X and RP), some of whom have made special "appearances" before on this blog. The kelong itself was called the "Hot Boys Kelong" (I don't even want to start to explain myself), and it was actually my second time there (...) Basically one of those fishing packages where you pay for board and lodging, which in this case was a creaky old single bed in dormitory-style accomodation, and simple seafood-oriented Asian meals. In return you get to fish from a kelong located in the middle of the sea, from a specially-constructed fish farm, with unlimited smelly squid bait. How could one miss? As I'd mentioned, this was my second time, so I kinda knew what to expect. ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Singapore Harbour January 6th 2013

So the website forced me to select a "Region" within Singapore, so I picked the only one with the word "Singapore" in it. Anyway, after some seven months of travelling, I was finally back home again, and not a moment too soon either. It had become a bit of a personal tradition for me to make it a point to spend the Christmas period at home, even during the years when I was studying in the US. There's just something different about the atmosphere and the air when Orchard Road lights up and the malls play those familiar Christmas jingles at year end. And I'm not even religious! Well I shan't dwell too much over my time back home, which was mostly spent catching up with family and friends, and recuperating somewhat from the travails of ... read more
