So after 6 months away, experiencing the Latin culture, it is sad to say i have left it all behind and returned to NZ. Though it is really good to see my family and friends again, but it means that i have left others behind. It has been such a fun journey over the past 6 months, and i have meet some great people and seen some amazing things. Whether it was visiting ruins that are older then our country, surfing in the hot hot beaches and releasing turtles out sea, or getting chased by big pick up trucks, all these they have all made my trip the most memorable and enjoyable. Mexico is a great country with so much to offer and can keep you entertained for months. Don't be put off by what is ... read more

And so my final week has counted down. And what a week it was. Spent alot of time hanging out with my friends, shopping, going out for lunches and singing more karaoke, pulling some rock star poses. Unfortunately one of those said lunches gave me some food poisoning, so i had to spend a few days holed up feeling sorry for myself. But i wasn't going to let that ruin my last week here, so filled up with medication and headed into town to see a small set of ruins 'Tres culturas'. Although the ruins are not much to look at, the interesting thing about these is that it contains three periods of Mexican history reflected by those buildings pre-Columbian, Spanish colonial, and the independent "mestizo" nation. This is also the place where the Tlatelolco massacre ... read more

Have been a busy body this week. Went to the Chapultepec castle, the only royal castle in the American continent. It sits high on the hill overlooking the city. The building was amazing, with big marble staircases, and grand murals on the walls etc. Though it was clear that i have been to way too many museums etc, as i wasn't that excited by the exhibits on display. But more impressed with the actual building itself. Meet up with my friends on Fri, and headed back to the zoo to see the monkey's one last time before i leave. Which was a good thing i went back, as they had pandas there this time and were really amazing to see. On Sat. i met up with the gang, and went for a ride on the Trajaneras (little ... read more

Left the hills behind and headed back to Mexico city to spend my last two weeks catching up with my friends and exploring more of the city. A friends cousin came to town in the weekend from NZ, so we met up in the center of town to go out for some drinks. We headed up to the tallest building in the city, the Latin American building, where they have a bar on the 47th floor with spectacular views of the city (bet you didn't think i had that word on my vocab list). After a cocktail each, we headed down the road to the Mariachi plaza. Its a big square full of people standing around the various mariachi bands playing around the plaza. We stopped in to get some food and take in the atmosphere, ... read more

Arrived late at night, high in the hills of San Cristobal. Could not be dealing with big hairy spiders another night. San Cristobal is a small colonial town, where lots of the locals all wear their traditional outfits (they are really cute...helps that they are all really midget like too). Decided it would be a good idea to go for a horse ride in the hills. We went to some small village just out of the center, and jumped on a horse and went for a ride. A group was just coming in as i was to do my tour, so i used one of their horses... poor thing was grunting away all tired and sad. Thought it might collapse or something, but with a crack of the whip (not by me) the horse got second ... read more

Left Merida and arrived at jungle. Checked into a hostel that was made up of a bunch of very simple cabañas, with walls up to the waist then mesh the rest of the way. So i started closing the curtains to get some privacy, so no one could watch me pick my nose or scratch my bottom. Then what did i see sitting there on my curtain.... a big hairy tarantula looking spider. I almost pooped myself. I didnt know what to do.. so i left if for the time being and went on a monkey hunt. Didn't have to look far, as right outside my cabaña in the trees there were heaps of these little howling apes, climbing from tree to tree. That helped me forget about the spider in my room. Anyway.. fear got ... read more

Was left all by myself again in Cancun.. one by one my friends left me.... So i left too. I am now in Merida, in the state of Yucatan. This is the Mayan region and is full of ruins. Though i couldn't see them all i went to the main ones, Chichen itza (large pre-Columbian archaeological site built by the Maya civilization), which are about 2 hours from Merida. Apparently they are now recognized as one of the wonders of the world, and i can see why. The ruins are over 1500 years old.. a little older then my mum. there is a great huge pyramid that towers over the site as you walk in the main entrance, followed by many other ruins as you walk around the huge site being heckled by the many almost ... read more

Again, not much to say here as we spent the last few days of basking in the hot sun, swimming, pina coladas and a trip to an island in the mix. We caught a ferry from downtown Cancun and headed to Isla Mujeres to swim in a different clear blue water. We arrived on the island and hired a golf cart, thus ending up hooning around the island like race car drivers… driving 20km (a fast 20km). I actually raced the golf cart and beat it.... maybe becuase im that fast. The island was beautiful, with clear blue water on all sides and was so warm to swim in. after a spot of sunbathing we headed back to Cancun, only to have another swim before we headed out for a few drinks. While out having our ... read more

Back to the land of taco's and tequila, to meet Nadia all the way from Kiwi land. Landed in Cancun, and instantly felt the heat. My jeans came off and the swimwear went on..... There isn't much to say for a few days as it was spent swimming & basking in the hot sun (jealous much?). One day we saw the conservation guys digging up the turtles nests, so went and had a look. He was taking out all the hatched turtles to be released that night. So me being me, i just had to touch one. In the evening out for a walk we came across the guys releasing them out to sea, so we got in there and let some go too, was pretty exciting. On wed we felt it was time to do ... read more

After watching the show i figured it was time to head to the Jersey shore and see all the tanned guidos fist pumping myself. Funny enough, my hotel was literally down to road from the Jersey shore house, where all the shenanigans went on in the show. The boardwalk along the beach was full of stalls, games, food and fun park rides... oh and not to mention the 'Shore store" where all the guys worked on the show... full of really over priced shirts saluting the guidos and the Jersey shore. The holiday season just finished so most people had gone home, but there were still many people out, and it was great to do abit of guido spotting along the boardwalk. When night time came. aka; t-shirt time, we donned our t-shirts and headed out ... read more
