What a crazy night that was! Andre walked me down to the internet cafe, then invited me to join him for a party with some friends. Now if ´´Homeland Paci´´ had o´ been in town I probably would have said no. But it was just me, so I thought, ´why not?´ So about 1:00am we roll back to the Pousada, having been to four parties, each of them featuring live bands playing loud forro music, everybody singing along and dancing it up, three of the festas were in the streets, one of them a quasi political/ poetry ´do´ in the middle of Recife. At one point, I realized, while perched in the boys room, that if Andre disappeared with his amusing buddy Julio, I would neither have the means or the wherewithal to find my way ... read more

What a difference a plane flight makes! I´m now in Olinda two and a half hours on the plane north from Rio. It´s way more hot and humid here. Nobody speaks English, so my bizarre Spanish/Portuguese cross over is getting a real pasting right now. My accomodation quality has taken a bit of a dive too towards what I was expecting all along. Eric, I´m in Africa now! You know what that means! Today was pretty much a travel day sitting at the mostly deserted Rio airport, chatting with a Brazilian family from Peabody, Mass, then taking an uneventful flight back into the chuva (rain). At the hotel, I´ve already got a tour guide attached to me who seems decent enough - there are hordes of kids around who I expect will be haunting my steps ... read more

What a difference a bit of sun makes, eh? I took a tour today up to the outstretched arms of Jesus overlooking the city. The 30 meter statue is visible from everywhere in the city - when it´s not shrouded in clouds, that is, so imagine what a pleasant surprise to wake up crisply at 6:30am to a crystal blue sky. I rushed out to the beach to see what it looked like in the sun, ate another buffet breakfast, then eventually piled in the back of a van with Fernanda, the guide, two gorgeous Norwegian girls just about in their twenties, four Argentinians just about in their eighties, and two Brazilians in their thirties. Take a guess who I end up sitting with? You´ve guessed it, the Argentinian geriatrics. Gave me a good chance to ... read more

I´ve had a pleasant time so far, although the weather has not been cooperating, exactly. I ate last night up on the 23rd floor of the sister hotel to the one I´m in and spent most of the meal stumbling around basic Portuguese with an extremely friendly but equally incompetant waiter. After the appalling attempts we made to communicate, it was actually a relief to get back to the sanctity of my little, incredibly expensive room. I´ve tried the Brazilian beer of choice, Skol, as well as the food, and very pleasant each of them were. I was back in the hotel by 9:00pm and asleep shortly thereafter. Amazingly, I had to force myself out of bed close to twelve hours later to catch breakfast. I´ve got to retrain myself to eat like a horse at ... read more

I just got back from my first stroll along Ipanema beach. On the way back I was walking toward Sugar Loaf mountain with impressive waves crashing on my left and giant gloomy storm clouds stuck to hillsides in front. All the lights came on - it´s 5:30pm and going dark already. I´ve followed all the cautions the guidebook recommends so far, but it has tended to create a slightly paranoid sense of expectation that I´m sure will wear off after a few days. It was quite a lovely walk in the end. The plane was late out of Boston, then there was a medical emergency on board that led to quite a hair-raising descent into Miami. As the fates would have it, the connecting plane experienced a mechanical problem - first they told us all the ... read more

It's Friday, and I fly on Monday to Rio. I've just had a brilliant few days wrapping up school - the play turned out to be fab, the last day was fun, we had an excellent pool party, interupted by a couple of vaccinations, then more tom foolery in the pool splashing about with my students. Usually I get hurt at the end of year party, but this year I got away scott free! I met up with Lucille, Eric, Mike C, Kristin, Karen, Kristina, Adrian, et al for a fun bash at Orleans in Davis Square, then rode home very carefully. Today, I went into school early, crashed the room, finished the paperwork, then found a travel agent who was able to sell me a Brazil airpass, then had a two hour traffic jam to ... read more

One week to go, then away on my next 'big day out'. This time, I'm off to Brazil, and I hope some of you will write to me as I pass through the seven or so weeks I intend to spend there. I fancy visiting some splendid islands for tropical fish and the like, the Amazon, for obvious reasons, and the wildlife paradise, the Pantanal, for added exotica. Hopefully, I'm going to meet up with my good friend Eric for a portion of the tour. Right now, I have an exciting and action packed week ahead wrapping up the School year with my beautiful students. If you like to read inflamatory opinion expressed with little grace or elegance, but a fair splattering of piss and vinegar, then this blog may amuse you briefly, who knows? So ... read more
