Mary Meyers

My name is Mary Meyers and I am from Atlanta, GA. I am 21 years old and a senior at Georgia State University. I will be using this blog to inform you (my family and friends) about my travels to and in Oslo, Norway. I will start my voyage February 27, 2009, and will return to the U.S. on March 7, 2009. I am new to traveling abroad, so I am very excited/nervous.

If this program is repeated, it is highly recommended by me that the coordinators get a local guide to take us to every place we need to go. This morning, we got on the bus to go to our last kindergarten school, and followed the map which actually did take us to the school. 1 hour and 15 minutes later from the bus stop, we arrived at the school, mind you. This walking has worn my feet to the bone! I was praying out loud, yelling, and hurting from walking over such difficult terrain (hilly, icy, slippery, slushy). On the map, the instructions said it would take just 12 minutes to walk there. WOW! Once we got there, this lady was telling us "Hurry, hurry! You are late! Did you get lost?!" And I was thinking, ... read more

Today was actually very laid back, and given the condition of our feet (blistered) and our bodies (worn out), laid back was a very welcome quality. We began the day by walking eh…40 minutes or so to avoid the steep hill in the front of the hostel. Personally, I would have rather braved the hill like we have been doing than walked forever to a tram stop! Anyway, we got there, and once we were on the tram, we took a five minute ride to a kindergarten school. In Norway, the term kindergarten refers to a school that has children from ages 0-6. (Primary school then begins in grade 1.) At this particular kindergarten, the students were assigned classrooms, but it was done in a way with no particular rhyme or reason. There were 16 month ... read more

Our internet connection is very low at the hostel, so that is why the updates have been less frequent over the past few days! I hope everyone is doing well. Today we went to the International Children’s Museum in Oslo. It was very difficult getting there due to some confusion from the map + ice, but we made it, and it was fun! That last sentence has been pretty much a summary of the whole trip. Anyway, this museum is a place to display children’s artwork, that is, anyone under 18 from anywhere in the world. There were paintings, drawings, sculptures, puppets, dolls, instruments, and more on display throughout the building. I could not take pictures inside the museum, but they have a website if you are interested in seeing some pieces. (www.childrensart.com) After touring the ... read more

We are all so exhausted, but we had so much fun today! Some of my buddies went ice fishing with third graders! I, instead, stayed indoors with some wonderful second graders. In this school, there were 25 kids in our class, but it wasn't overwhelming because they were very well behaved, super cute, and excited to be at school. In this class, the teacher was really big on having music and movement time, even in the 2nd grade! This is really rare for 2nd graders in the U.S., especially on a daily basis multiple times. Another difference is that they have two recess periods every day no matter what! The kids love playing in the snow, and it was such a joy to watch them doing it. They also do not have structured schedules so they ... read more

Hello all, Today we went to Oslo University College for lunch and a few lectures. I need to bone up on my metric system because I had no idea what a hectogram was. Neither did my group members, and by the time we had to pay for our meals which were measured in hectograms, we soon owed a lot of money for a little bit of food. I guess we in America just have lost sight of what a true "serving" should look like, and because of that, we don't exactly feel full from the food we are given or are surprised when we owe a lot of money for what we would consider a reasonable amount of food. *SiGh* I just know when I get back to America, food will NEVER taste better to me. ... read more
