Day 118 We had our final White Rose fruit smoothie before catching the bus to Phnom Penh. Arriving at the bus station we picked up a tuktuk (who tried to grossly overcharge us until he realised we had his number!) over to lakeside and the backpacker area of Phnom Penh. We managed to get a $3 room, had wash to make ourselves feel human again and relaxed on the balcony bar overlooking the lake. Later that evening we had planned to meet Kate and Danny at a restaurant in town dedicated to training and supporting street kids. The food was amazing and we left not only full but with the warm fuzzy feeling that comes with helping a good cause (or it might have been the wine?) We all headed back to the area we were ... read more

Day 116 There were two options for our journey to Battambang, the bus or the boat. We had been told that the boat ride was beautiful and we were a little bored of buses so despite the fact that it was a bit more pricey we had opted for the waterways. Yet another early start and we were in the reception of our hotel for 6am waiting for our transfer to the boat to Battembang. Boarding the bus we were told to squeeze into the most unrealistic places (Chrissie settling uncomfortably between two seats with most of her butt hanging in mid air!) as we sped down an increasingly bumpy mud road. Relieved to be able to get our feet back under us, we got our bags and settled on our small boat for the trip. ... read more

Day 112 Today was a travel day. We left Kampot on the bus at about 7am and arrived into Phnom Penh around 11.30. Our next bus was to leave at 1.30 so we found a little cafe and had some iced coffees while we waited. We got into the cafe just in time as at around 12 it filled up to bursting point with local people on their lunch hours coming to watch the Thai Boxing on TV - obviously a regular daily activity. After another bus journey we arrived in Siem Reap at around 7.30pm. The bus station is around 3km out of town and absolutely packed with TukTuk drivers offering free lifts to town in the hope that you'll book their services to take you around the temples for the duration of your stay. ... read more

Day 110 Packing up and having another lazy morning on the beach broken only by a trip to the bar to order food and Chrissie getting a beautiful (and bargain) manicure and pedicure, we hopped onto a moto to the bus station. A bus ride later, made shorter by us both falling asleep, we disembarked to a scrum of touts for hotels trying desperately to insert the cards for their hotels into our nostrils. A bit discombobulated from just waking up we told them all to go away for a minute for us to decide which one to go to. They weren't too keen to do this but we finally chose a cheap ($3) but comfortable enough option for the next couple of nights. We went out to explore the town which was a much smaller ... read more

Day 106 After a late night watching the Wimbledon finals we packed our things and were on the bus by 7am destined for Sihanoukville. After catching up with our books and getting a bit of sleep we arrived at the station and jumped on the back of a couple of motos to take us out to the (reportedly) nicest beaches in Sihanoukville - Occheuteal. We had planned to stay at Chiva's Shack, but Chrissie's driver misunderstood and took her to the wrong place. Thankfully she remebered where we were heading and after convincing him that she didn't want to stay where he'd dropped her but would rather join her husband she turned up in the right place! On arriving we booked into our very basic but functional room (which was FREE to stay as long as ... read more

Well, you'll probably have realised by now that all of our trip entries so far have been lost due to problems with travelblog. We have decided to stay with travelblog because the setup until now has been superb so we hope that all will be well in future (and will back up a little more often in case!) We had backed up the majority of entries and have managed to recover most of what is left but probably won't get around to rebuilding past entries fo a while. We also lost many of the entries that we had saved but not yet not published. The internet connections in Cambodia and Laos have been really slow and we therefore havent been able to upload pictures, planning to wait until we could do this before publishing all the ... read more

When we left China we were excited to be tackling another country and the new challenges and experiences it would bring. From other travellers accounts of Vietnam we had heard differing views of the same places so entered with little to no preconceptions about what we would find. It was first the friendliness of the people that captured our imagination. Coming from what could often be a confrontational environment in China we were amazed by the openness and interest of the locals. Yes, everyone wanted your business and there was almost always a sale involved in the approach, but it was done with a big smile and when you said no - on most occasions it was taken with a smile and acceptance of the fact that we were not going to buy the product. Over ... read more

A message for Mouton: the last picture on this blog is of a snake - you might want to miss that one out! Day 102 Up at (what felt like) the crack of dawn we packed and were off to the travel agent fully laden to leave Saigon bound for the Mekong Delta for a couple of days and ultimately finishing our tour in Cambodia. Before we set off, we bought a really cheap (possibly copied) version of the Lonely Planet for Laos and filled up on our final cheap Saigon cheese baguette! We got on the bus and a couple of hours later we arrived at My Tho where we boarded our boat which sported a painted pair of eyes on the bow. We were later told by our guide that all of the ... read more

Feeling happier that we knew what we were doing (roughly) for the next couple of weeks we treated ourselves to Pizza for tea before heading back to our room for a marathon watching of LOST series 3 (which we had bought on DVD for 2 pounds 50 - bargain!) Day 98 Getting up we plenned to do the walking tour from our guide book to explore a little more of ... read more

Day 94 When we planned to give up our jobs, rent the house out and set off around the globe many people we told said they thought we were brave to do it, lots of people said they wished they could do the same and plenty of others said they couldn't give up home comforts for the hardships that we would face over the next couple of years. We heartily agree with the last as we sit on the veranda of our bargain priced, beachfront bungalow watching the palm trees wave over the white sands of Mui Ne. The travelling life is mighty tough! We arrived in Mui Ne at around lunchtime (which is about 11.30am in Vietnam) and settled into our bungalow. We had decided that we'd treat oursleves to some higher priced accomodation ... read more
