Well, I still don't have a real job and I haven't decided what I want to study in grad school yet, so I'm heading back to Europe to be happy again.

I will be mostly WWOOFing (world wide opportunities on organic farms) in Italy, while improving my language skills and making some academic contacts for a possible Fulbright scholarship. I'll probably do some more traveling to other countries, too. But, I might have to come back early for a job.

It's a one way ticket and largely unplanned, so I'll just wait and see where I end up...

Remember how I was in Germany and missed Italy and was excited to return? Turns out I came back to Italy only to still be in Germany. Let me explain. Much of Trentino Alto Adige (NE Italy) used to be part of Austria until after WWI, when it was given to Italy as sort of a way to punish Austria. So, the architecture here is quite German and people often speak also German. I knew all this from last summer when I was in Bolzano, but I had no idea how different living with a more German family would be. The farm is called Maso Plaz and is Val di Non and it is beautiful, peaceful, and quite different from any other WWOOF place I´ve been. They produce fruits and vegetables like the others, but here ... read more

Ciao a tutti! I'm just going to get right into it... Italian Nightlife Italian summers are full of parties. Of course there are discos (clubs) which can be really cool with multiple dance floors and outdoor locations. But each little town has a summer party with tables of food and drinks for the whole family and a band and dance floor. Some bigger towns have larger parties where you can walk around to different little parties with different food and music and people. And remember that this is all taking place outside, in classic Italian towns with cobblestones, fountains, churches, etc. The concept is just beautiful. And then there are festivals which are almost the same thing but they may have a theme and last for days, like Art in the Street in Verduno where street ... read more

It's been a while! I've been at the same farm for the last month, working a little and having lots of fun. It's a pretty good life. My brother Alex is coming to Italy in August for about 3 weeks so I'm going to plan a grand tour for us! I bought my return ticket, and I'm still not sure if it was the right choice, but I'm going back August 25th so I can help Alex move up to New York. I'm going to give America one more chance. We'll see what happens. Quick review of the last month or so: Cons: This month has been incredibly hot, so it's difficult to do anything but sleep (pro). But because of this weather, I haven't been doing too much during the day and I haven't seen ... read more

I'm back in Rivalta to work on my favorite farm after about 2 weeks at the farm in Lake Como. (I must apologize in advance: as I learn more Italian, my english vocabulary deterriorates, so...yeah.) It was certainly an escape from reality and...I can't think of the words but like a cleansing spa experience. I ate healthy, got lots of exercise, read books, studied italian, and soaked in the beautiful surroundings. I must admit that this last week (or however long it's been) hasn't been the best. My mood is always dependent on the weather, and it was rainy and cold, combined with the unusual lack of people around and there's not much work to do in the gardens when it rains. Also, Silvana, my Italian mother, talks constantly. Before I liked it, because it helped ... read more

Ciao a tutti! I've been WWOOFing in Perledo which is on the East shore of Lake Como (yes, where George Clooney has a house), above Varenna. It's incredibly beautiful, as you can see. This farm is much like my favorite in Rivalta in that they grow fruits, vegetables, and has chickens for eggs which they sell at markets. However, they also make honey and olive oil, only sell at the local market, and the land and family are quite different from what I'm used to. This area is ancient. Really, really old. So old that Gigi can't even tell me how old. And everything here is ancient: the houses, the paths, the land, the trees, and many people. You can't even drive to the house. In a city it might be called dirty and decaying, but ... read more

Ciao a tutti! It has been a wonderful week or so back in Italy. I've been staying with Mattia and his family in Rivalta di La Morra. I've basically been living the lazy lifestyle of 20-somethings in small Italian town. Sitting around, talking, drinking, eating, smoking (not me), going out every night, etc. We did some touristy things around Alba and Bra like visiting a corkscrew museum and the Gastronomic Science University. We also spent an entire day on the beach in Finale with his sister and another friend and I was so vigilant with the sunscreen that I didn't get a sunburn! The beaches in this area aren't the best in my opinion, but there was a beautiful view of mountains and a castle and the sand was full of beautiful sea glass which we ... read more

Translation: Goodbye Americans and Hello Italians! *The pictures you see are from my last update from Italy that I never published and just discovered. The text is at the end.* Since I last published an update, not too much has happened. I came back to America (why!?) to a terrible job market and still no clear life path. I've been living at home, applying for jobs, interning at Palm Beach County's Environmental Resources Management Department, studying for the GRE and Italian, and having little travel adventures now and then. I finally came up with a loose 2-year plan and going back to Italy is a big part of that. BUT...I may return early if I get a job. It's a one-way ticket and there are so many directions I could go in (literally). I sure haven't ... read more

Allora... I have had many dreams in the last week from desires about my future to nightmares. I'll tell you about some of these in a bit. I've done a good job avoiding thinking about reality up until now. It was easy when I was oblivious to what was going on in the world and didn't even know when I'd return to America. But now, I'm catching up with people and news, and my return date and all the responsibilities I will face after then are slowly creeping into my thoughts... But, that's my only complaint. Everything else here is just peachy. I do something different every day, while the schedule remains the same. Some new things I've done: pick pears using a wobbly ladder, harvest grapes and began to make a sour liquor, caramelize and ... read more

Today is Sunday, so I'm not supposed to work, but I've been such a lazy bum for the past week or so that I insisted on some hard manual labor this morning. I weeded around raspberry bushes for 3 hours, in the shade, and while I was working near the pear tree it said, "Sara, you've been working hard and you seem hungry." I was hungry. Then a perfectly ripe fruit fell at my feet and I ate it. Okay, so the tree didn't really talk to me, but the pear did offer itself to me, and life is that beautiful here. Yesterday was some kind of Catholic holiday having something to do with Mary (that's actually how it was described to me). I went with some of the family to a church, but just walked ... read more

I am on another agrotourismo for 2 weeks, but this so is very different from that previous hell hole. The scenery certainly isn't as beautiful, but everything else is better. I was worried about coming here, but after one day I was sure I would have a wonderful stay. Check out the website: http://www.boscodelfracasso.it/ There is a husband Maurizio and wife Anna. She speaks excellent English, and he speaks a little. They have 2 sons in their 20s, who are like the guys on the other farm in that they are into American rock music and don't help out much. The parents of both the husband and wife live here, too, I think. I've ended up running into them at some point. The whole family is really laid back which is perfect for work. They grow ... read more
