Day 111: Saturday 18th October - Returning to life as a backpacker with a bump Get up ridiculously early so I can enjoy a bath before I leave......don't know when the next opportunity will be! Pack my bags and get breakfast and at shortly after 9am its time to say goodbye to Estancia Huechahue. Jane drives me out to the road and Domingo, one of the gauchos waits with me until the bus shows up at 9.30am. Arrive back in Bariloche some time after noon, and as my next bus is in less than 2 hours its not worth heading into the centre of Bariloche so spend an hour on the internet. Its a 8 hour journey to Puerto Montt....it doesn't look that far on the map but you have to pass two sets of immigration ... read more

Day 107: Tuesday 14th October - Arriving at Estancia Huechahue too sore too ride! Arrive at Estancia Huechahue shortly before midday, after a short hop (3 hours, but that is short in Patagonia) north from Bariloche on the bus. The bus driver has no clue where Huechahue is evidently when I ask him, although I confirmed yesterday when I bought the ticket that the bus passes the Estancia (ranch). Fortunately I spot the miniscule sign to the Estancia from the road and get dropped off just 200 metres past the entrance, otherwise I would have arrived at the next town 25km away! Met by Carrie when I arrive, who although Argentinian speaks exceptional English. She helps me out by booking my 2 flights with LADE for later in Patagonia, I´m lucky as the reservations had expired. ... read more

Day 103: Friday 10th October - I'm going to love Argentina! Arrive in a windswept and overcast Bariloche in the late afternoon. Despite being at only 700m altitude, this is one of the coldest places I've been to yet on my trip. I guess although it is termed as the Argentinian lake district, Bariloche lies in northern Patagonia, one of the least inhabited, harshest and desolate environemnts on earth. I quickly search for my coat out of my bag as I'm going to have to walk to the centre (some 2.5 kilometres) as I have no Argentinian currency and there is no ATM in the bus station. Walking straight into the wind for the full distance would be some inconvenience apart from the fact that the beautiful Naguel Haupi lake is constantly in view on my ... read more

Day 98: Sunday 5th October - Arriving in Rapa Nui and climbing up to Rano Kau I need a guy in the bunk below to wake me as I end up sleeping through two alarms. Fortunately I make my flight but I feel rough on the taxi ride to the airport and also sat about the airport.....maybe it wasn't a good idea staying up drinking to the early hours?! The flight leaves at 8am and it is five and a half hours to Easter Island, which although a Chilean territory, is almost 4000km from the coast of South America. Easter Island happens to be the most isolated place on earth, being almost 2000km to the nearest inhabited island. The airline which is the Chilean national airline, LAN, is very good. One of the best airlines I've ... read more

Day 96: Friday 4th October - Sterile Santiago My bus leaves Valparaiso for Santiago at 10.40am, plenty of time to walk to the bus station - or so I think. After taking my time over breakfast, packing my bags and checking something out on the internet I end up leaving the hostel at 10.15am. Its a good mile and a half to walk and I end up hurrying along the main street with all my bags, making it with just a minute to spare. Need not have bothered rushing as the bus breaks down (or something is wrong with it) and we have to change buses shortly after leaving Valparaiso. Arrive at Santiago 2 hours later and after catching the metro for a few stops, arrive at my hostel around lunchtime. There doesn´t seem to be ... read more

Day 94: Wednesday 1st October - Arty Valparaiso Have a frustratingly long walk to my hostel after getting off the bus. Its in Cerro Conception, one of the hillsides that are the trademark of Valparaiso. First its a deceptively long walk along the main avenue in Valparaiso before I miss the entrance to the lift up the hillside and have to trudge up the next road leading up their on foot. Once in Cerro Conception I can't find the hostel, and walk up and down the street for a good 10 minutes, passing the entrance to the lane where the hostel is on a few times! After viewing an alternative choice I end up going with my original which is up a colourful lane and is a large turn of the century house, part of which ... read more

Day 91: Sunday 28th August - Back to the warmth in San Pedro de Atacama It takes an hour from the border to get to San Pedro de Atacama, the border town in Northern Chile. I'm still dressed in thermals, numerous layers and a coat when we stop at the border control post in San Pedro. The immigration is straightforward but afterwards we must all stand in a line next to our bags as they are inspected (somewhat feebley) for fruit and vegetables. We get back in the bus as it drives the further mile to the centre of the town. Get out of the bus and say my goodbyes to the other three on the tour and then start the process of finding a hostel. Day 88: Thursday 25th September - Getting to Uyuni Feel much better after a good night's sleep....though struggle to get out of bed today. I think its because I've got a 6 hour bus journey to look forward to and then a tour to book...which is never the most fun. My lower back's also sore after a day's horse riding....and I know it'll be worse tomorrow before it improves. Have breakfast with some English & Irish girls and boys in the hostel before leaving Tupiza at 10am. The bus journey passes through some spectacular scenery on the way to Uyuni (pronounced Uni), and also meets a few obstacles in the road in the shape of roads being constructed or blocked due to roadworks!! Day 87 - Wednesday 24th September: Riding in Bolivia's Wild West Get up at 8am after three and a half hours of proper sleep. Feeling lethargic but want to go horse riding today - the purpose of coming to Tupiza. Wasn't originally going to come to Tupiza but a number of people have recommended it, and they can't all be wrong, or can they? Coming into regular contact with other travellers you get advised to go to various places, most of which I don't do as you simply can't do everything, but there was something about Tupiza which intrigued me. Maybe its the chance to get some riding practice in before my stay on a ranch in Argentina in 3 weeks or the stunning scenery I've seen in photographs. Anyway, I quickly walk around the town ... read more

Day 85 - Monday 22 September: Getting lost in Potosi Arrive at Potosi at 4pm, which at 4060m is the highest city in the world. Doesn't look far from the bus station to the hostel I want to stay at so start to walk. Bad decision. Walking steeply uphill at 4km above sea level and getting lost severtal times on the way isn't good for the mood after a 3 hour bus journey. Can't be bothered to explore the city today, and again the hostel is quiet so its dinner out alone. Bump into the GAP tour group again in the restaurant, where I decide to go local cuisine, having a fillet steak in a spicy stew...its good.
