Day 167: Saturday 13th December - Three-legged drinking games in Westport Leaving Nelson Lakes national park, the bus continues to Murchison. At the stop off I get a huge ice cream - trying this legendary Hokey Pokey ice cream which I'd be alerted to by the two Kiwi girls from Dunedin whilst in the Cook Islands. Apparently this ice cream only exists in New Zealand. Well to me it tastes just like Crunchie ice cream from back home with a honeycomb taste so its not unusual after all. Whilst in Murchison I also bump into Jo and Meghan, the two girls we met in Abel Tasman national park. This isn't the last time we meet either. After a short break we head west to Westport, our first stop on the west coast of the South Island. ... read more

Day 164: Wedneday 10th December - Returning to the South Island Nelson is a small city (it would be a town in the UK) of 50,000 people, which makes it the third biggest settlement on the south island after Christchurch and Dunedin. Its also the sunniest city in New Zealand and the weather is living up to its name. We arrive late in the afternoon, and the first thing I do is call up to book a place on a walking/kayaking tour in the nearby Abel Tasman national park. That done its off to the bar for the free beer tasting session. This is followed by my first roast dinner since leaving the UK, Yorkshire puddings and all. If it wasn't for the sunny weather in mid-December I could almost be at home! After dinner its ... read more

Day 163: Tuesday 9th December - In a rush to see the capital By the time we arrive in Wellington, New Zealand's capital city at the base of the North Island its 7.30pm and the one thing I really wanted to do whilst I was in the city - visit Te Papa museum, supposedly New Zealand's finest museum - is closed. This is really annoying as I can't afford to get off the bus with no bus for another 2 days. Its either stay an extra 2 days in Wellington or stick with my original plan and hop off the bus and spend two days in Abel Tasman National Park. I've seen pictures of Abel Tasman and New Zealand is all about its scenery rather than its cities so its no hard decision, Abel Tasman it ... read more

Day 162: Monday 8th December - Driving to River Valley After leaving the Tongariro national park the bus winds its way through the rolling green hills south east to river valley, a lodge located on the Rangititikei river. Towering cliffs and bush-clad hills surround the lodge in its remote location. Here, we have the option of white water rafting and horse trekking - but these activities are all happening tomorrow. The evening is spent chilling out in the beautiful surroundings over a few beers. At 10pm I've had enough as the last few nights have caught up with me so I retire to the dorm to read a book. The dorm houses 32 people and is more like the facilities you get in huts when you're camping than a hostel. Its cheap though but the downside ... read more

Day 160: Saturday 6th December - Arriving in Taupo and visoting Huka Falls and New Zealand's biggest lake We leave the rolling green hills of the Waikato behind and travel South-East for a short journey to Taupo. Taupo sits on Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake at 600 square kilometres and the caldera of a volcano. This is one of the world's supervolcanoes and witnessed the second largest volcanic eruption in the last 70,000 years as well as a lesser but still huge eruption in the second century when the after effects were noted in both Roman and Chinese histories. On the outskirts of Taupo we stop at the Huka Falls. These are truly impressive. Not high like Sutherland falls or massive like Iguassu Falls, it is just the sheer speed at which the water tumbles ... read more

Day 159: Friday 5th December - Caving in Waitomo After leaving Rotorua at lunchtime we head off through Waikato and the King Country region to Waitomo (meaning water caves in Maori). Waitomo is on the torist trail due to its limestone caves which are hidden beneath the countryside. After dropping bags off at the hostel I get changed into swimming shorts ready for my 'caving' experience. I've decided to do the 'Black Abyss' blackwater rafting tour which is on offer here. After learning some abseiling skills on a hillside next to the entrance to the cave in full wetsuit (we must look ridiculous to any passers-by!) we're off on the 5 hour caving tour. I'm first out of the eight of us to do the 35 metre abseil down into Ruakuri cave. I haven't abseiled for ... read more

Day 158: Thursday 4th December - Rotorua, the sulphur city We leave Whitianga early in the morning after an all too short a stay on the Coromandel peninsula. Its another gloriously sunny day as we head south towards Rotorua. On the way we stop off to do a short walk at Karangahake gorge. Its a pleasant stroll through some nice scenery but nothing spectacular like the Milford Track. We also stop off at Paeroa home of Lemon & Paeroa (L&P), which is a famous soft drink in New Zealand. Its basically lemonade.....if there's a difference I can't taste it. Our final stop off before Rotorua is in the small town of Matamata. Matamata is now famous as the nearest town to the location where Hobbiton was filmed for the Lond of the Rings. I get a ... read more

Day 157: Wednesday 3rd December - The Coromandel Peninsula Today marks the start of my trip through the north and south islands with Kiwi Experience, a hop-on hop-off tour bus. This is the first time I have veered from travelling independently and I'm not sure after 5 months of doing it my way I will enjoy it but I'll just have to wait and see. One thing is for sure I'm glad not to be going back to Base Auckland, a hostel that resembles a meat market! I almost miss the bus pick up by standing in the wrong place to be picked up. Just in time I realise the error of my ways and board the bus. After a few other pick ups around Auckland and a stop off at the office we get on ... read more

Day 151: Thursday 27th November - Starting the Milford Track First tramping; no I haven't decided to become a scruffy homeless person, although some may argue that I'm getting close! No tramping to the Kiwi's is what trekking or hiking is to you or me or what bushwalking is to the Aussie's. That cleared up lets get on to the tramp. The Milford Track is considered one of the world's great hikes and is the third multi-day trek I'll be doing in as many months. ( the 'W' in Torres Del Paine, Chile and the Inca Trail in Peru being the other two). I'm lucky to even be attempting the Milford track as until I met an Australian guy in Peru I was just going to turn up the day I wanted to do it. As ... read more

Day 148: Monday 24th November - In a rush to get to the Otago Penninsula I have a few hours to kill to catch up on things in the morning ahead of my flight to Dunedin at 11.45am. Its a 45 minute transfer to the airport, where upon I encounter probably the slickest check-in routine I've ever seen. No wonder check-in is only half an hour before domestic flights with Air New Zealand. I'm flying via Christchurch to Dunedin, and it takes an hour and a half to get to Christchurch and then a further 40 minutes from Christchurch to Dunedin. The airport in Dunedin is a good drive out of the city itself so by the time I get off the shuttle at my hostel it is after 3pm. Dunedin is the 5th city of ... read more
