10th feb - Monday We haven't really come to Vietnam on a war sights pilgrimage, but decided to book the half day tour to this former Viet Cong encampment as it would give us a chance to view some of Saigon's rural scenery. The journey to and from Saigon afforded views of the countryside which included lush green paddy fields, rubber plantations, water buffalo tended by village children and peasants working in the fields. A typical snapshot of the Delta region. En route to Ben Dingh, the site of the tunnels we took a rest break at a workshop created by the Government to find employment for injured war veterans and younger people damaged by Agent Orange contamination, a bit like the UK Poppy Charity. Their work included beautiful intricate lacquer-work, from tiny figurines to huge ... read more

9th feb - Sunday Lovely lazy morning. Woke thinking we would give breakfast of Pho Noodle soup a miss in favour of an extra hour's sleep. Carried out our usual morning routine and dawdled down to reception to hand in keys only to find we were an hour earlier than thought and with a little more haste could have made breakfast, having missing the soup by only 10 minutes. Phew! Close call. Armed with map and glorious sunshine we brave the streets of Saigon. Made great headway, first port of call was the Art Cafe opposite the Ben Thanh Market where we enjoyed a much needed caffeine kick and shared a Croc Monsieur (French influence still evident), before braving the market. Within seconds we were assaulted by vendors anxious to sell us their wares, unfortunately for ... read more

8th feb - Saturday This morning, our last in Bangkok, visited huge famous Chatachuk market, which is user-friendly with all stalls arranged by commodity. Picked up some nice cheap light-weight tops and trousers, ideal for the climate in Vietnam. As traffic was manic all throughout the city, whether due to political activity we don't know, journey back to hotel took twice as long, with all roads in and out of the city gridlocked, and bearing in mind that we were right in the centre, next to Democracy Square, we decided to take airport taxi earlier than planned to avoid missing our Saigon flight at 4pm. Bon voyage Thailand. Lovely memories of very friendly people, non-aggressive driving habits, good food, fantastic national park and wildlife. Saturday continued : Go... read more

7th feb - Friday Reluctantly leaving Ayuthaya. Despite our intentions to travel first class rail, ha, ha, not always have such carriages. Hence, after much bartering with rail clerk, paid 250 baht (£5) for 2 very good 2nd class tickets to Bangkok. 'Very fast rapid train'. Of course it was running late, but only a mere 30 minutes, nothing to worry about. On arrival at our destination we tried to follow all the rules according to well laid guidelines :-Do not take taxi directly from train station, drivers rip you off-Insist upon air-conditioned taxi with meter-Insist driver turn meter on before you get in to car-Barter the fare or get out of cab-On no account take Very bad Tuk-Tuk- Walk away from station using hand signal like patting dog to attract meter taxi with honest driver ... read more

6th feb - Thursday After our lovely meal last evening, we rose later than intended 0930but we are on holiday so no schedules. After a light breakfast we took to the old city, walking between the lovely lakes and interconnecting islands with their many Watts (ancient temples). We were surprised by the temperatures which were in the mid 30's C and quite humid. It seems incredible to believe that this once beautiful City was lost from most people's memories for several centuries after the Burmese sacked it in the 1760's ,overgrown by forest it was only rediscovered and excavated in the mid 20th century. Sadly the Temples show all of that neglect but the Museum is full of artefacts salvaged from the ruins and many fine examples of the Budha, Leo thought far too many! In ... read more

5th feb - Wednesday Today has been a bit of an adventure. Arrived Pak Chong train station 8.30am to discover 'ordinary' train delayed by an hour and a half. Great start to the day. However, as we sat patiently on the pretty platform a theatre of activity unfolded before us. Local vendors appeared from every direction, mostly trawling across the railway tracks. Choosing their spot carefully, buckets, packs of ice and cartons of drinks soon became tempting pails of chilled drinks. Others had woven baskets containing meat on sticks, sticky with spices, types of fish on stalks, carved fruits such as papayas, tied tightly in air-filled plastic bags, small sachets of sticky rice with sesame covered meat balls, corn on the cob, huge woks filled with cooked noodles and vegetables, and more. By now the vendors ... read more

4th feb - Tuesday Up with the sun this morning. Spent most of the night listening to the calls of the birds and animals, we are really just on the edge of the jungle. As we are heading south tomorrow we want to make the most of our day here in lovely Khao Yai. Weather still beautiful with a misty haze over the mountains. The views from the house are fantastic. What surprised Leo and I was the number of trees, shrubs and flowers that are common to Cyprus. We decided to do another trek. According to the park trail description it was Orchid Campsite to Haew Suwat Waterfall, distance 3km, walking time 2hours, concreted trail, easy to follow. 'Can walk yourself. No need guide'. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Not at all as described as it happens. ... read more

3rd feb- monday Another beautiful day. New experiences. Chose to drive into Pak Chong this morning to locate it's railway station. Driving here is pretty easy, same left hand side as UK and the drivers seem really chilled out, sluggish rather then nippy. Never seen so many expensive shiny twin-cabs, not a smart or compac car in sight. The owner of the house where we are staying made only one express wish. 'Do not let the dogs (there are three here) eat the chickens from the neighbouring farm as the farmer is a little less than thrilled about this problem).' As we walked towards the car we heard excited barking and loud clucking. Yes, two happy dogs about to enjoy a late breakfast. We managed to help the hens make a hasty retreat then drove away. ... read more

2nd feb After 12 hours sleep - awoke to a beautiful morning, listening to the constant calling of a tropical bird (feathered variety), its name as yet unknown to us. Petted the dogs, giving them the last of our ham, we'll buy some dog biscuits later to ensure they stay friendly. Had wonderful trek in the rainforest with our guide. His name sounded like'yawn' but could have been anything really. Between his minimal English and our non-existent Thai, conversation was fascinating. After 4hours of trekking, we are proud that we can now identify at least 3 different types of animal poo. Of course, we learned a lot more than this and had a fantastic day. At one of the look out points we found ourselves the subjects of curiosity. We were asked to pose for photos, ... read more

1st feb Our flight. Left Larnaca on time. Surprisingly full. Lots of Cypriot passengers so had usual disputes on seat allocations, baggage room, and rosary chanting. Excellent food on both flights with first taste of eastern food. Fragrant basmati and steamed fish, byriani mmmmmm. Incidentally, on our coach journey from Larnaca we noticed a strange chap who had a younger companion. They sat towards the rear of the coach, 2 rows behind us. Throughout the trip he cussed, berated the world and was very disturbed. Leo commented that he hoped they were not booked onto our flight! We made up a couple of scenarios about them including terrorism etc and were dismayed to see them on the Abu Dhabi sector of our journey, back row, handcuffed. His young companion being a police officer. Great beginnings. The ... read more
