Apologies to everyone for the radio silence the last little while! Things have been crazy during the week, and I've been out of town the last two weekends. The weekend before last I visited hilariously tenuously linked "family friends" in Ashdod for the Shabbat, and had a wonderful, wonderful time. The Seters live on a moshav (self-contained farming community, formerly collectivized) just outside of the city of Ashdod, near the coast. It was ridiculously humid, but the company more than made up for it. There are no pictures though, I'm afraid - no photography on Shabbat! This weekend I made a failed attempt to escape the unseasonably hot weather in Jerusalem (I feel justified in this - all anyone can talk about here is how unusually hot it is!), by going up north to the Galilee, ... read more

So, I have a whole post written up about my recent trip to Jordan, but can't find my camera cord to retrieve the pictures. It's around somewhere, but in the meantime here's a quick run down (with pictures!) of my earlier trip to the central coast with my friend Alex. Alex did the Birthright program in May and did some work on a farm in June, so he had been in Israel for a while. We met up at the very end of his trip, and after a really fun night in downtown, modern Jerusalem (which was something new for me!) with some of his friends, we took the bus to Tel Aviv. From Tel Aviv we took the train north a bit to Binyamina; from there it was a short taxi ride to the famous ... read more

*Found camera cord, so we're off! Tuesday before last, Mar and I left for five days in Jordan. 45 minutes after leaving Jerusalem, Jordan was crossing the Jordan to go to Jordan. It was a cosmic alignment... even if the Jordan itself was hardly cosmic in scale or impact (it looks more like a tiny green creek than any proper river). We took a shared taxi-van to the border station (in the Jordan Valley near Jericho), and then got out and walked through the customs and passport desks. That took almost an hour, since one of the two border guards up and left mysteriously and never came back. On the other side of passport control, we got on the "Foreigners" bus and crawled over the valley floor to the Jordanian side. Once crossed, the Jordanian police ... read more

*NOTE: once again, the picture display is kind of funky. To see the big version, click on the photo; to see the caption, which has a lot of information in it, you might need to scroll down a fair amount, and look on the right-hand side. Sorry!* Hi again everyone! I played tourist yesterday, and went down to the Old City again. I wandered my way down to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which is the supposed site of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. It is an amazing, stirring place, and I happened to walk in just as some Franciscans were starting a procession through the church (which is really more like a series of churches than one unified church). So I of course tagged along, and so I got to see all of ... read more

*NOTE: It's unhappy with me for having so many pictures, I guess, but for some reason you have to scroll way down to see the pictures, and some of them are on the second page (click the little "2" above or below the entry, then scroll all the way down again). Sorry about that! Hi again everyone! Here are some pictures from around my neighbourhood (Ramat Eshkol), my first venture into the Old City, and my trip to Machane Yehuda market today. My old city trip didn't really include any big sites, but it was neat to just get a little taste. Machane Yehuda took a bit of effort to figure out on the bus (and some false starts - I spent more on repeated bus tickets than on shopping, haha), but it was ultimately a ... read more

After arriving at Gatwick around 6am, I caught the shuttle to Heathrow and sat around waiting for the counters to open. After a raft of police and sniffing dogs checked the area, El Al opened up and promptly informed me that no, I could not check in early and ditch my bags with them. Undeterred, I paid through the nose and left them with the Heathrow service. I had a lovely afternoon wandering around London: through Hyde Park, up to Marble Arch, along Oxford Street and through Mayfair, followed Regent Street to Piccadilly, down to Pall Mall and the Mall and over to Trafalgar, just in time to get caught in a torrential downpour. I caught the bus back to Piccadilly, then a long, soggy bus tube back out to the airport. After some long, nauseating, ... read more
