Six weeks spent first going back to my spiritual home, China, and then discovering Japan...

Asia July 25th 2010

Afraid this will have to be a somewhat short blog entry, as need to go to sleep before too long! Also, keyboard is pretty funny and may disappear into Japanese at any moment! But yes, I'm in Japan! So far, so amazing - definitely one of the most liveable places I've ever visited, and possibly the politest, sweetest people of all time. Will need to do a proper update (and I'm aware I haven't even finished China yet!) but I'm climbing Mount Fuji tomorrow (!) so a good sleep is def needed! So yes, arrived into Tokyo on Wednesday the 21st and pretty much immediately loved the place. Found it so much quieter than anywhere in China - who'd have thought I'd find the metropolis of Tokyo relaxing?! Hostel was nice, and quiet, and the next ... read more

Right, second blog entry of the day, and a big update on everything we've been doing! Now back in Beijing, and can hardly believe I'm flying to Tokyo on Wednesday! Will go back to Dandong and update from there :) So, we went to the North Korean restaurant. It was... really interesting, actually. The decor was cheesy and very 70s, 'We Are The Champions' was playing, and we noted that they were selling Evil Imperialist Capitalist Coke, but the waitresses looked very cute, decked out in their little blue hostess outfits and matching shoes/hair clips. We ordered some standard Korean fare - love Korean tea - and it tasted pretty good, but what was funniest was that our waitress really wasn't all that friendly. We decided that they must have thought us to be American, and ... read more

Asia » China » Inner Mongolia » Hohhot July 18th 2010

A bit late, but here is my blog about the amazing Inner Mongolian grasslands, and am going to try to get some photos up too! So, we were really lucky to get on probably the least-touristy tour to the grasslands ever, as it was organised directly by our amazing hostel. I'd really wanted to go to the grasslands, but was a bit wary of the tours I'd seen advertised, as I wanted to share the grasslands with as few people as possible! As such I was really pleased when our driver turned up and just four of us got into the car - Megan, myself and two Americans. The driver was really sweet, and was Mongolian, so had quite a bit of knowledge about the area, despite the language barrier. We drove through some amazing scenery ... read more

Asia » China » Liaoning » Dandong July 12th 2010

Hello all, have made it to Dandong and made it to a (surprisingly non-dark and non-scary) internet cafe, and we feel almost as though we've landed in Korea! A lot of fun, and an ace city, but more on that later. Last stop was Hohhot, and off to Beijing. The overnight bus wasn't as horrific as I'd feared - picked up some kung-fu moves courtesy of Jackie Chan and people didn't smoke/spit, but my seat didn't recline and the man in front loved his mobile phone a little too much! So didn't sleep a great deal and when the bus got in at 4.20am we were confronted by a bunch of scary men, so hopped in a taxi to central Beijing. In the end, had a great little daytrip to Beijing! Dumped our bags in a ... read more

Asia July 10th 2010

Hey all, just a quick one (and no pictures, sadly!) to say I'm unlikely to be online for the next day or so as we're on the move again, but not quite in the way we'd planned it! We'd wanted to head straight to Harbin from Hohhot, but there are no trains for the next three days (seriously, it's not fun hearing 'meiyou' time and time again...), so we'd planned to go across to Beijing and up to Harbin, but guess what?! Meiyou, for the next three days! I suspect that the train people are lying to us. So instead we're booked on a bus for tonight to Beijing (which is shorter than the train, but more expensive...?!) and hoping to head directly to Harbin tomorrow if we can, preferably without having to kill a day ... read more

Asia July 8th 2010

Greetings from Inner Mongolia! Apologies (especially to Dad!) for the relative dearth of blog entries - unfortunately have spent the last couple of days being pretty sicky and not really in a bloggy mood. However, feeling a lot better now, and very excited for the days ahead! This is going to be a beast update, and I'll definitely try to add some photos if I can. Right... so. Leaving from Xi'an. We'd booked ourselves on to a hard sleeper from Xi'an to Xining, a city which is right on the Tibetan Plateau. The train itself was fine, despite being on the top bunk! Chinese hard sleepers are a pretty civilised way to travel - bunks are comfy and clean enough, in tiers of three, and although open to the corridor, everyone settles down not too badly. ... read more

Asia » China » Shaanxi » Xi'an July 3rd 2010

Made it to Xi'an and met up with Megan! Very happy, and very excited to start some adventures! Going to try and add some photos this time, so it's not just a boring blog with words! Got the train from Beijing with no problems - soft seat really wasn't too bad. No overcrowding in the carriage and plenty of air-conditioning, and a person next to me for virtually the whole time. Big seats, only downside was smoking at the end of each carriage was allowed. Didn't brave the toilets! Arrived in Xi'an and went straight to the hostel, and was able to check in right away, which was ace. Hostel here is much nicer (and cheaper!) than Beijing, but the mozzies here are aggressive as! Going to have to layer some local stuff on top of ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Tian'anmen June 30th 2010

A MUCH better day today. For a start, MY BACKPACK ARRIVED!!!! Went downstairs in the morning just on the off-chance, and there it was! Minus a minor hand sanitiser explosion, all is well with it, although I'm definitely keeping those 'Quick Transfer' and 'Expidite This Baggage' labels (aye RIGHT) as war medals! So I had a pretty nice morning of generally looking at outfits that weren't my travelling outfit, and having a good long shower (a cool shower...!), then headed to Tiananmen Square. Was pretty buzzing, lots of people, lots of staring but was all good... funniest moment was definitely when a tiny child just about sparked a major incident by making a break for the Chinese flag in front of the Forbidden City! Suddenly there was police everywhere, and a highly embarrassed mum! The only ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Tian'anmen June 29th 2010

A rather Henning Mankell-esque title, don't you think? But a scaff in Beijing is precisely what I am! This has been a twenty-four-and-a-bit hours of extremes; what a welcome back to China. The good news: I have made it to Beijing, I am in an okayish (room's a bit scruffy around the edges and the bed has possibly the hardest excuse for a 'mattress' ever, but it's clean and there's aircon) hostel, very near Tiananmen Square, and the flight was on time, so on and so on. The bad news: my backpack, my carefully-packed, containing EVERYTHING backpack, is not. Or at least, it may be in China now, but it's not at the hostel, and I'm going to have to phone them tomorrow, cos I'm heading to Xi'an on Thursday. OK, so the backpack saga first, ... read more

It's all seeming very soon now! For quite some time it was all very far away; as though all the planning was simply just planning, with nothing concrete actually taking place at the end of it. Even my flights seemed pseudo-booked, confirmation emails floating around in the ether. But now, I am flying out next week, NEXT WEEK, I finish up work for good tomorrow at half past 12, and last night I lay awake for half an hour making a million different lists in my head. Still so many things to do before heading to London, and then on to Beijing. I've definitely made progress since the last entry, mind you! What is scary is everything that is yet to be done. I think most of the stressful things are actually incidental to travel, such ... read more
