Geo: 26.1045, -80.1113There's so much to love about Ft. Lauderdale. It's the self-proclaimed "Yachting Capital of the World"; AKA the "Venice of America"; it's warm, it's sunny, it's happenin'! It sounds glorious doesn't it?!? It is. :)This time, we were there by boat, and we weren't only passing through like we did last year. This time we anchored in Lake Sylvia. Right in the heart of Ft. Lauderdale. Right by our favourite hangout: Bahia Cabana. Right by my old hotel and the Ft. Lauderdale Marina. We were close to all the amenities. Ft. Lauderdale is as wonderful as I remember it! As we arrived it didn't even bother me that we had to make it past TEN more lift bridges to get there! John and Joanne, our EYC dock mates were already there. It was great ... read more

Geo: 26.8364, -80.0527From Stuart to Lake Worth we spent the first part of the day rather excited about moving south, but after the first hours of sunshine, and good timing on the first few bridges, it started to rain, and then we had to wait for a bunch of bridges. It became a tedious day. Then there was the one bridge where we were circling for almost half an hour with Simunye. As the bridge final began to open, Simunye didn't follow suit. We kept watching as we moved towards the bridge and they didn't. Then we saw Christa up on the bow preparing to drop the anchor and we knew that they were having problems. At this point we turned around to stay with them and called the bridge to say that we were staying on ... read more

Geo: 27.2002, -80.2555Shocking. We actually stuck to a plan! ;)We left Indiantown, heading eastbound in the Okeechobee Waterway back to Stuart. We backtracked through one lock, and under our lowest bridge to date. It is 54 feet – our mast height is around 51, but we say 52 for good measure. (Ha! No pun intended!)In Stuart, we grabbed a mooring ball right behind (sometimes beside – depending on the wind direction) our friends on "Simunye" (Pronounced: See-moon-ya, Meaning: “We Are One” in Zulu.)Simunye had been in Stuart for several days before us, and were ready to move on as soon as one more part arrived for their boat. Because there were no weather windows to jump to the Bahamas at that point, we wanted to move further south to get ourselves to a good position to ... read more

North America » United States » Florida October 30th 2014

Geo: 27.0269, -80.4858It was a quick two days when we dropped off the boat, had it hauled out and then flew home, but now that we've been back, it's been a month of living up, on the hard and figuring out why Indiantown was such a great choice for us!!! :) Yes, the boat's been up on the hard to satisfy our insurance and we've been doing various projects. The one big one was to get the bottom paint redone and to raise the waterline, but the rest of the projects have been small ones. More than anything we've been waiting out the end of the hurricane season (which officially ends on Nov. 30th). Indiantown Marina and Boatyard has really surpassed our expectations on a place to be "stuck" during hurricane season. We've met so many ... read more

Geo: 27.0269, -80.4858After leaving Vero Beach, we stopped in Ft. Pierce again for one last hoorah with Tracy and Marshall and then continued on to Stuart where we stayed on a mooring ball at Sunset Bay Marina. While there, we got to see our friend Chuck whom we know from the first year we bought Inspiration back at Deltaville Boatyard in Virginia. From Stuart we made our way along the Okeechobee Waterway to Indiantown. We found the Okeechobee Waterway to be very similar to the Dismal Swamp, only it was summertime in Florida and therefore hot and humid!... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Vero Beach August 27th 2014

Geo: 27.6583, -80.3706Now that we were back in Florida, to wait out the remainder of hurricane season, the original idea was that we'd come into Ft. Pierce, stay anchored outside the Harbourtown Marina for one night, check into American waters, get our American Cruising permit and then move on to Vero Beach right away. We had been through Vero on our way down the ICW and had enjoyed it (and the marina's facilities) and figured that it made sense to go back up to a spot we enjoyed so much. Vero Beach has an excellent pubic transit system and the beach is within walking distance from the marina. On the second day after we had arrived in Ft. Pierce we took a walk along the marina docks and I spotted a catamaran that I recognized. It ... read more

Geo: 27.4694, -80.3248We arrived in Fort Pierce, FL 21 hours after leaving Mangrove Cay. We timed it so that we continued from Mangrove Cay across the bank and into the Gulf Stream in daylight. We left Mangrove Cay at 1pm, and we were off the bank at 6pm. Shortly after dark, we were approached by a stealth Coast Guard Cutter. Once they were on our stern quarter, they turned on their running lights and called us on the VHF radio. They wanted to know our intentions: what was our destination, where did we depart from, how many people were on board...etc. I spoke to them while Tony was on the helm. It was all routine stuff, and after asking us to standby for a few minutes while they obviously looked us up and checked us out, ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas August 17th 2014

Geo: 26.9155, -78.6223Last stop before the big crossing. We both had our list of chores to do before the crossing. Tony mounted the dinghy engine onto the stern rail, checked numerous things on the engine, and then it was time to prepare some food. While he did that, I scrubbed the bottom of the boat. It was a great place to do this as we were in a strong current. As I wiped the small bit of bottom growth away, it simply floated away! No little shrimp in MY ears!!! ;)Perfectly clean underbelly, food prepped, we were ready to depart. Left Mangrove Cay at 1pm. Off the Little Bahama Bank around 6pm. Arrived in Ft. Pierce, FL at 10am. 21 hour trip.... read more
