Central America Caribbean » Bahamas August 15th 2014

Geo: 26.9261, -77.7988Our plan was that Green Turtle was to be our last "town" as we set out across the Little Bahama Bank heading back towards Florida. We stayed at Crab Cay for one night, and the following morning continued westward. Sooner than later, we could see that there was a storm approaching on our radar. So we decided to "duck" into Foxtown. This was an unexpected stop, and turned out to be a very friendly little town. ... read more

Geo: 26.8363, -77.3738From Great Guana Cay we had to take an "outside" passage. We sailed for a short time past Whale Cay which is exposed to the Atlantic side. This passage is called: The Whale. We had good weather to do "The Whale" and then continued up to Green Turtle Cay. ... read more

Geo: 26.5423, -77.0638Took the Ferry from Hope Town to Marsh Harbour for a day. Neither of us were particularly impressed. For the most part, we ran our errands and then we ended up taking an earlier-than-planned ferry back to Hope Town. I can see Marsh being an important stop if boats need parts, groceries, etc. It is a major centre with all the necessities. It is also the base for several charter companies like The Moorings and Sunsail.... read more

Geo: 26.5374, -76.9608Pretty, picturesque Hope Town!!!We are happy to be in this lovely little town, and little did we know, we got here at a great time of year. There aren't the crowds of the winter or spring, and many businesses close in about a week (mid-August), so we are just in time to still enjoy! We've been here before. Four years ago we spent ten days in this area with John and Joanne on their catamaran. Really, nothing has changed. It's still just such a pretty little town with a beautiful beach running along the Atlantic side of the island and everything is within a ten minute walk of everything! The mooring ball we took is part of the Hope Town Inn & Marina. And they have a freshwater SWIMMING POOL!!!! Yes!! Major bonus!! Actually, ... read more

Well marked channel.

Geo: 26.4848, -76.9898Making our way up towards Hope Town, we anchored at Tilloo Cay for two nights. From here we dinghied over to Tahiti Beach, but then sailed past Tahiti Beach when we took Inspiration up to Hope Town. There are boats and people here!!! LOTS of boats!!! Mainly locals and day rentals. This is like 'cottage country' so most people travel by water to get around. Of course, there are also a number of sailing charter boats (the charter bases are in Marsh Harbour), as well as trawlers / larger power boats mainly from Florida. Many of the shorelines are lined with summer homes and rental properties. There are a lot of Americans here during their summer vacations.... read more

Geo: 26.3654, -76.9853We made the jump from the top end of Eleuthera to the Abaco Islands! This involved a jump across a section of the Atlantic ocean. For several hours of the ten hour crossing we saw nothing but blue ocean 360 degrees around us. It was a beautiful day. Did my best to forget that there were MILES of ocean below me. :)I also learned that it is next to impossible to take a panoramic shot on the open ocean. Even though it was a calm day, the wave action makes the horizon look LUMPY. lol. Aug. 8th, 2014 - Abaco A'right!Hello all, We made the crossing from Eleuthera to Little Harbour Cut and are now in the busy, bustling Abaco Islands. Our days of peace and quiet in the 'out islands' are over! There ... read more

Geo: 25.4926, -76.8883From Hatchett Bay we positioned ourselves at Egg Island to do the jump across a section of the Atlantic Ocean to reach the Abacos. We waited for a good day, and then exited the bay through the man made cut. It still doesn't look 90 feet wide...those rocks look like they are CLOSE! But we made it out very easily, and had a good sail up to Current Cut, but then the wind died and we motored the rest of the way to Egg Island. Egg Island had very clear, very pretty water. It was HOT with no wind. I dove on the anchor and then snorkeled around the boat for a bit to cool down. Finding a shady, yet breezy, spot on the boat can sometimes be a challenge...so I wedged myself in by the ... read more
The entrance is 90 feet...seems smaller.
Those rocks are too close for my liking.
It just LOOKS scary. We were fine.
