Helensburgh is the entry point for the John Muir Way and to the west of Glasgow along the River Clyde. Today's segment is the first 9 miles of 134 and I am taking time to sit on the bench and contemplate a wee while. From here the River Clyde spills out into the Irish Sea and then crosses the Atlantic, not much changed from when Muir left here as a lad with his family and began the adventure that created America's national parks. One of the things that I hate about driving cross-country is dealing with the Plains. No offense, but Kansas is so boring, so imagine my surprise as I pull into the first rest stop and see that it offers free wireless internet. It worked great and I was able to make the requisite post to Facebook but little did I know that it must have been the only wireless equipped rest stop in the State because I didn't see another one. The best surprise in crossing Kansas was the wind farm. It sits very close to the highway near Salina called the Smoky Hills Wind Farm. They seemed to come out of nowhere and every time I turned a corner there was another one waiting for me. Well I worked all night, cleaned out the apartment, put the last of my things in storage, crammed the car full and hit the road. I got exactly 165 miles before I realized that it was too hot and I was too tired to continue, having stayed up all night so I pulled into the last Colorado outpost of Burlington. Found a room in a tiny motel called the Hi-Lo which was proudly owned by Americans and felt a little bit like a Hitchcock movie. I was so tired and it was only noon but it had air conditioning and a bed. I slept the sleep of the righteous and woke up around 7pm thinking that I would hit the road.
