Woke up in my bed at Pariwana and realized I was done hiking. I had reached Machu Picchu and survived. I was still sore and exhausted from the Salkantay hike so I was taking it easy for today. After breakfast I went to the Bioandean office and dropped off the bag I rented from them and got my T-Shirt. I wander around the main square looking at Alpaca stores until I was able to negotiate with one for a set of mittens and warmers. Alpaca is not cheap but it was such soft and light mittens I consider it a fair bargain. After that I was not feeling well and went back to the hostel to lay down. I was running a fairly high fever so I slept for much of the day. I emerged in ... read more

Today was the day. All my hard work would pay off. We woke up at 3AM and were out of the hotel by 3:30AM. We walked 10 minutes to the bus station and were one of the first people in line. We chatted a bit with other people in line. The 2 people directly beside us were 2 Americans from Washington who were also teachers. People came through the line with offers of tea, coffee, snacks for sale. People gratefully bought them as it was a bit chilly waiting in line. Puma got there around 5AM and he had to buy his ticket because he had forgotten to do that last night. Before he got there a minor kerfuffle occurred in the line as groups tried to clump together and people got annoyed with people cutting ... read more

It was not an easy sleep last night because the campsite was blasting loud music for much of the evening but I did noticed when I went to the bathroom there were not a lot of people out anyway. I woke in not great shape as I was running out of clean clothes and my knees were killing me because of all the walking. On top of that I had infections on my feet. I was in so much pain but I had a relatively short hike today. After breakfast we had an optional activity which was the zip line. It was 90 soles and it came with 5 zip lines and a bridge. We took a van with a group of Belgians and a Uruguayan family. It was the first time I had ever met ... read more

It had rained hard last night again. It was going to be another muddy hike today and I was not looking forward to it. Puma told us we would have some uphill and downhill hiking today but mostly downhill. As we prepared to head out I chatted with the Swiss group who were trying to decide to whether try to hike or just take a taxi to the next stop. It was tempting decision considering the weather. We packed up and put on our rain ponchos before heading out. The first part was to get out of the campground which was a downhill hike through very thick mud. It was slippery and none too safe. Once we got through that part the hike got easier and we found ourselves walking through a Peruvian jungle full of ... read more

It had rained hard last night and I knew how hard it was because I had to make a run to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Over breakfast Puma told us how rare this was but everyone would be pushing through anyway. I told Puma I was opting for the horse because I was still having trouble with the altitude. The horse would cost 100 Soles and would take me to the top of the pass and I would hike the rest of the way. An American couple was in the same tent as me and was taking the horse because they had only gotten to Cuzco the day before yesterday. The horse or more precisely the mule was waiting at the start of the trail. It was a skittish animal and promptly ... read more

Woke up at 5AM and slipped out of my room as quietly as I could. I went to the kitchen to do some last minute packing. I was told to be picked up at 5:45AM but around 5:15AM I heard one of hostel staff going up and down the hallway calling out a name that sounded like mine. I answered them and they told me someone had been waiting for me at reception for last 30 minutes. I hurried downstairs and put my luggage into storage. The hostel lets you store your luggage while you are on Machu Picchu hike. The other person on the hike was in the van. Robert was a professor from the Netherlands and had mountain climbing previously. The van picked up our porter, cook and guide. We drove out of Cuzco ... read more

I woke fairly disoriented and realized that tomorrow I would be on the Salkantay trail. I was wondering now if I was in over my head but I was too far in to really back out at this time. Sleep was interrupted a couple of times as people who were returning from the tours woke up people trying to sleep. At one point one guy was making a lot of noise rearranging his luggage and someone else asked him to keep it down (in English). He replied back he didn't speak English so he was told to keep quiet in Spanish. It was amusing conversation. Pariwana hostel provided breakfast and I helped myself to coffee and bread. They also provide milk and cereal but I decided to keep it simple to allow my body to adjust. ... read more

Got to Cusco at 8AM in the morning. Cusco is at half the height of Mt Everest so adjusting to the altitude would take time. My first impression of Cusco was that it was a city built on hills. I mean that quite literally. The instant you step out of the airport you will see the mountains and see houses built all the way up them. My hostel Pariwana had arranged a taxi to pick me up and he was waiting with a sign. I will say that driving through Cusco can be quite dangerous. The taxi ride should have cost 16 Soles but the taxi driver insisted on charging me 30 Soles. I put in a complaint with the hostel and will update this blog when I get a response. Pariwana Hostel was recommended by ... read more

Here we go again. With this trip I will have been to every continent (N/A Antarctica). I was not certain which country in South America I wanted to go to but a lot of travel buddies recommended Machu Picchu. I unfortunately chose too late to take the traditional Inca Trail trek so after looking at the other options I went with the Salkantay trek. It is a more difficult and a day longer hike. There are also a ton of companies to choose from but I chose Bioandean based on recommendations from friends. Day of flight was Friday afternoon and my younger brother drove me to the airport. Airline was Avianca which is a South American based airline and provides cheap flights all over South America. There uniforms are all red with a red fedora hat ... read more

Woke up in the hotel for my final morning of the tour. A large group had already left for the airport and the rest would be gone by 1PM including myself. I had an unusual situation because I was the sole non-Londoner and my flight left at 2AM the following day. I wandered a bit around the hotel before the last group (Ashleigh, Ollie, Luke, Carey, Gary, Kait and myself) got onto a van and drove to the airport. Everyone else had a flight at 5:30PM and I figured I could hang out with them until they left and wait for my flight. Well plans don't always work out because Egyptian security refused to let me through until I could check in, which wouldn't be until 11PM. So we said our goodbyes before customs and I ... read more
