Yesterday, I had the pleasure of going to a soccer match between world #13 Cameroon and world #101 Tanzania. It was at the new National Stadium. Even though almost all Tanzanians expected to lose, the city was remarkably transformed. Tanzanian pride blossomed in the streets and the stadium was nearly sold out. I was told that it has a capacity of 64,000. There were at least 60,000 people there, if not more. Luckily for me and Ashley, Mike managed to get us tickets in the relatively comfortable VIP section. We had an amazing view of the entire game and the crowd was pretty sweet. Although they supported Tanzania more, they were pretty upset any time the ball went out of bounds or a whistle was called, no matter who it was against. The game ended 0-0, ... read more

Welcome to Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania since 1974. On Thursday morning, we left for the six hour bus drive to Dodoma to see the Budget reading session of Parliament (the Bunge). The scenery was pretty, with mountains and open plains and the occasional little village that happened to be in the same spot that they wanted to put the road. It was a long drive during which I managed to finish my book. Luckily, we arrived in Dodoma soon afterwards. I didn't realize that we were in Dodoma until we actually passed the Bunge La Tanzania. The tallest building in the city is maybe 5 stories high, but that might actually be too high. It's ridiculous. We stopped by the hotel, got changed, and went straight to Parliament. We waited there awhile (playing Hangman kwa ... read more

There is really no good reason for this entry except because I can. Well, and because I will be away this weekend in Dodoma to watch a budget session of Parliament which may actually turn out to be very fun. Our trip to Zanzibar has been canceled because the island has been without power for the past few weeks, so there is no running/clean water and people have begun to riot (or so the BBC reports). Last night I met Mehdi who is going to help me tremendously in my job here (interviewing a man in Manzese, a second-hand clothing market). And, because he has close ties with FIFA, he is getting at least me and one Ashley (who I invited to our meeting last night just because I didn't want to be completely alone) free ... read more

Instead of full fledged stories in this entry, you will get two lists that reflect my first full week in Tanzania. Things I Miss about the US 10. The ability to eat any food anywhere I go 9. Not completely standing out (wazungu wanaondoka!) 8. Feeling safe in a motor vehicle 7. Paved roads 6. Not sleeping under a net 5. Reliable electricity 4. Knowing world news as it happens 3. Not feeling clean at mid-day 2. Hot showers 1. Running water Things I Love about Tanzania 10. Exploring the city and hoping the neighborhood is safe 9. Ridiculously cheap texting (4.5 cents to other Tanzanians, 8 cents international) 8. Unpredictability of animals 7. Not knowing what the food I order actually is 6. Sunny and warm weather 5. Price of meals (usually $0.60-$0.80) 4. Kusema ... read more

My first impression when I stepped off the plane was that Tanzania is one hot country...temperature-wise. Even at 9:30 PM it was well over 80 degrees. Lahra, the program director in Dar, and Deyo, a driver, met us at the airport. I say us becuase I was on the same empty flight from Zurich as Ashley, and when the plane nearly emptied out in Nairobi, we decided to sit together to try to figure out how to fill out the stupid immigration cards. It was a nice flight, especially since I had several seats to myself. But Dar is simply hot. We stayed our first night in a hotel because we all got there at different times and we needed to regroup. On Saturday morning, we took a bus tour of downtown (and all of its ... read more

One of my main reasons for getting up to Brussels early, besides all the extra sightseeing, was to visit the King Leopold II's Central African Museum. Technically outside of Brussels (it's in the Flemish city of Tervuren which completely surrounds Brussels), it is nevertheless served by Brussels public transportation. Tran 44 takes a 45 minute journey past embassies and through forests. I not-so-secretly wanted to walk it, but the distance and downpouring rain made it a very bad idea. So I settled for the tram. One would think that a museum of high stature would have signs indicating its direction from public transportation stops. This museum, after all, is the largest of its kind in Europe and contains the world's second largest collection of tree samples (after a museum in Madison, Wisconsin). Yet there were no ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels May 28th 2008

When the European Union forces all of its member nations to give up their sovereignty to build a super-nation, Belgium will be the model and Brussels will be THE capital. But hold that thought for a moment while I recount dinner Monday night, which I had previously forgotten to do. On Monday night, Elizabeth and I went to her French friend's house. Sandra is from the area and has a very nice apartment. She speaks English, but the three of us got along the entire time in French. Sandra later commented that I had a French accent, but not a French vocabulary. :( Hey, at least I got the accent down!!! While there, we watched some TV - including "Les 100 Stars le Plus Sexy." However, we only saw 100-4...the program switched before we could find ... read more

In case you didn't know, one of my dreams has been to walk across an international border, and today provided the opportunity. But first, let me explain how I got to this point. So yesterday (Monday), Elizabeth had to go to work so I was left alone with a map of Lille and told to explore. Wrong words? I walked the entire city (except for the south side, which I'm told is a little sketchy). I started in the center, went through Vieux Lille, and ended up on the canal. I walked along the canal until I was almost out of the city and then turned to get back into Vieux Lille. Along the way I passed the French Foreign Legion and another military grounds (which aren't marked on the map, making it difficult to know ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Kent » Dover May 25th 2008

My first full day in Lille, Friday, was spent with Elizabeth taking me on a full tour of the city (albeit very quickly) and then a tour of the Musee des Beaux Arts which had a special Goya exhibit. It was nice. But that seems so long ago, compared with yesterday's adventure. So Elizabeth's friend Rachel really wanted to go to Dover because one of her friends suggested it. We thought we could do it in a day - train from Lille to Calais, ferry over to Dover, visit the city, then reverse it. Sounds good in theory, but it didn't really work out that way. We got to Calais nice and early. On the train, we played a fun game called "Ces vaches sont les miennes" which is exactly what it sounds like - claiming ... read more

Europe » France » Nord-Pas de Calais » Lille May 22nd 2008

The traveling was good, but the intermediate parts were a little bit worse. Starting at the beginning: I arrived at the airport very early and went through security about 5 hours early (I had a reason, I'm not insane). I watched the earlier flight to Paris leave and then waited for mine. While waiting, a Hasidic Jewish man sat next to me. He and a few other Hasidim were looking to make a minyan, but they didn't have enough people, so I volunteered to the guy sitting next to me. Unfortunately, I only made 8, so they had a Minion, but not a minyan (that's my funny of the day). We got to talking about Judaism and Israel, which killed some time. Yay! The flight went smoothly, but we took off over an hour late. My ... read more
