Well, just to dispell this travelling Cockney Victor Meldrew image I am gaining both with my wife and certain comments on the blog (thank you very much) we have had an amazing week both in the desert and then in Arequipa and the Colca Canyon. Leaving Lima, which was no sad occasion, we made the bus trip to Huacachina which is a desert oasis. In fact, you get the bus to a place called Ica and then a taxi onwards. Its very odd arriving there as one minute you are in a normal Peruvian city and the next minute you turn a corner to be faced by huge desert of sand dunes. The change is so rapid it does feel a little like walking into a film set or something. Around the dunes you arrive at ... read more

Well, we have finally completed the journey from Quito to Lima. What would have been a 2 hour flight has only taken us about 10 days on the bus, but it has been a great journey and I have become a champion bus bingo player. The buses in Peru are soooo good compared to Ecudor (and the UK for that matter). They have beds, semi beds, air conditioning, leave on time, have films that you can both see and hear and have entertainment such as bus bingo. I am a convert although this is South American bingo so is a bit more raucous than back at home with bonus numbers for getting questions right. I have even won a game although I didn't want to shout bingo as I still get confused between the words for ... read more

Well to say we cheated death might be overplaying it slightly, but for those convinced that I am in someway both jinxed and blessed with great fortune it will be of no suprise to hear that we narrowly survived an avalanche this week. Leaving Quito for the final time felt good as we were finally departing south towards some of the other countries we had planned to visit. Ecuador is a difficult place to leave as despite its small size there is a ton of stuff to do. We planned to go up into the Andes and stay at a hostel called The Black Sheep Inn for a few days (and for my birthday). The hostel is a bit of a legend in Ecuador as it is nestled in the middle of nowhere but is run ... read more

Wow what a week....I didn´t really know what to expect from the Galapagos but it was amazing and although very expensive, was worth the money for sure. Even before going it had been a great week. Spanish school went well and with the end in sight seemed a lot more interesting in week 4 even if I did have a new teacher who I didn't much like. On Thursday morning we went on a trip to the top of one of the big volcanos around Quito, Guagua Pinchinchca, with the vulcanologist who we had seen speak a week or so earlier. It was a 3.30 start which meant getting up at 3 which was extremely painful but was well worth it. We headed up a very steep and bumpy road in a jeep and typically I ... read more

Hi all, Another week of language school has passed and scarily there is only one week left to improve my stumbling Spanish. This week has been fairly quiet really although we did have an abortive attempt to volunteer and a trip to some great hot springs in the mountains. School was quiet hard core this week and even ´model´student nosi was driven to saying ´**** Spanish - let´s not go today´. This week it has felt a bit like really going to school as the glow of finally speaking Spanish has worn off and the reality of learning hundreds of verbs and all their conjugations has set in. We have stuck with it but it does feel good to only have 1 more week to go now. Our Spanish is miles better now though and to ... read more

Hi all, This week has flown by what with mountains of Spanish homework and a couple of trips it feels like only a few days ago that I wrote the last blog entry. Spanish school is still good although starting the second week felt like a struggle. We both get on with our teachers very well. Pia my teacher has an evil sense of humour whilst Norma, Nosi´s teacher, seems to be a goldmine of information on Ecuador. Much to my distress, Nosi is still trailing a blaze of Spanish well ahead of me, which culminated on Thursday´s museum trip, when there was some confusion as to whether or not I was a complete remedial or not! I was not best pleased, particularly when I found out that I understood as much as Nos it was ... read more

Buenos dias! (the Spanish lessons are really paying off :). First things first the shock waves from the sad death of an Aussie legend have reached as far as South America and Nos and myself have been very upset indeed by the untimely demise of the crocodile hunter. We have been in Quito for a week and a half now and are finally getting fully to grips with the city and the people. Spanish lessons are very hard and tiring but great in many ways, not least that out tutors are able to explain to us what on earth the crazy goings on we see are about. Last week the goverment sacked every street cleaner in the city, sparking demonstrations aplenty. (Demonstartions being a national past-time here.) My backside has finally recovered from the double whammy ... read more

.....And so we arrive back in Quito after a great week on the Pacific coast surfing, whale watching and (as usual) eating. I'm not sure what lies ahead on our travels but seeing the whales must go down as one of the highlights - they are absolutely amazing. To be honest, the trip to the coast didn’t start out well. We got the bus to Guayaquil, which is the 2nd largest city in Ecuador, but by reputation the most dangerous. The bus station there is the most manic place I have ever been in my life. There were literally hundreds maybe thousands of buses and taxis and seemingly no signs to give you any clues about how to get where. The place was rammed with people or as I was seeing them 'potential muggers'. With planes ... read more

I shudder at reading Joe´s last entry about the people of Riobamba. We woke up yesterday morning to find that a nuclear winter had descended over the city. The sky was a murky brown and it looked like a heavy snow storm was engulfing the region. This turned out to be volcanic ash from the biggest Tungurahua volcano eruption of all time. Banos was completely evactuated the night we left and is now unreachable by road, 150000 ´people are now either displaced or without electricty. The Ecuadorian government has declared a state of emergency in the area. The streets of Riobabamba were ankle deep in dust which swirled everywhere , pervading our eyes and mouths. People had umbrellas up to protect themselves from the constant drizzle of volcanic fallout. All the shops were shut and no ... read more

Finally left Banos today after waking up in the night with the whole room shaking and doors banging. All morning the volcano was rumbling ominously so after cancelling our parasailing we got on a bus to riobamba. 2 hours later upon arriving here we look back and can see an enormous plume of volcanic ash hanging in the sky so it looks like we made a lucky escape. I dunno we leave london and the next day the whole plane system goes up the spout and now we leave banos and the volcano blows. Beware the good people of Riobamba (where we are now) we leave in 2 days. Next up is a ride on the top of a train into the andes...... read more
