OLIVER (thats Sir to you!): So after a 1 1/2 long taxi ride from san jose a bumpy unimog ride a death defying tractor journy and a 1 or 2 hour up hill treck we have arrived in RARA AVIS one of the first ecotourist lodges built in costa rica. The place was going to be sold to a logging company but somehow they managed to buy it from under the loggers noses! the place is a private reserve with with a "hotel" (hot water no eletricity but coool old carosene lamps) the comunal meal time place and cabinas ( all made out of on sight cut fallen tree wood) and of course trails. on our first night there, there was a univercity group of 14 plus us and bob and justin (father and son who ... read more

Oliver: we have arrived EN CUBA! and have begun stocking up on che guevara shirts and memorabilia. Its amazing to see how these people have survived through the us embargo. But they persevere. Cuba is very different because unlike most of the world it is a planned economy as a opposed to a market driven economy. However it is not the socialist government that has at all crippled the cuban economy but the US embargo and its banning of all flights into cuba. The cubans have free health care and free education (all the way through uni), the life expectancy is around 77-80 (highest in all latin america and higher than parts of the US EVEN) and every1 can read and write also it has quite possibly the lowest people per docters in the world ( ... read more

Martin: Having learnt the entirety of the spanish language in two weeks (ha!), and being so completely fluent we were asked to translate for complete strangers, it was time to cut the apron strings and set of to explore guatemala in the raw. We said good bye to our Maestros and left them some spanish versions of ¨the cat in the hat (not realising that it doesnt rhyme in spanish...) took photos (which got fried in a power surge) and set of on the next leg of out trip. After numerous discussions in spanglish with the travel agent down the road, Hugo and the charming but incomprehensible Raquel pursuaded us to part with $US1,500 in return for some hand wirtten pieces of paper, that they assured us would provide us with hotel rooms, private shuttles to ... read more

Oliver: Hoy (today) we visited an organic macadamia finca called 'Valhala'. Our parents didn't have to twist our arms to go on this trip. Macadamia nuts are really delicious, I know this because my grandparents grow them on their farm in New Zealand. We hired two motorscooters in Antigua and travelled in pairs - me with Martin and Louis with Paula. 5 mins after we left we had to turn around and go back to get a bigger one for me and martin because the original was far too small and Martin was getting squished. We ended up on a much bigger but older model, which it turned out squeaked so much we nicknamed it 'the cricket'. We set off again (squeaking all the way) and promptly got lost. Mucha practica hablar español with some bemused ... read more

This afternoon we caught a bus to Pacaya - a live volcano near Guatemala city. We climbed right to the top and walked around the cooling lava flows. You can look down into the hot magma below wherever there are cracks in the solidified lava. We went late in the afternoon and it was almost completely dark by the time we got to the top. The boys all poked sticks into the magma and set fire to them. It was way cool.... read more

Having missed out on the spectacle that is 'la dias de muertas', we are grateful that fiestas are so popular in Guatemala. We undertook our first camioneta (chicken-bus) adventure to a small pueblo to watch a procession full of angels and devils. The bus trip there was a challenge to those of us with issues about personal space. The aisle between the seats is so narrow you have to side-step down the bus. And the seats, while designed to hold two people, on this trip each held at least a family of five. We were tightly packed in the aisle for the whole trip, which was mercifully only a short distance from Antigua. While everyone was waiting for the procession to start, the streets were filled with ice cream, soft drink and bon bon vendors. The ... read more

We have arrived en Antigua! Antigua is a very old city with entirely Spanish colonialist style buildings. The trip here was VERY bumpy, windy and lONG so 3/4 of the way there I spewed all along the outside of the van. A great start. All the locals are tiny. I am a giant here! Anna, who cooks and cleans our casa is much shorter than my LITTLE brother. The city is quite beatiful (a bit grungy) you can easily imagine the city (much like it is now) at the time of the Spanish conquistadors. We are going to a language school for four hours every morning to learn Español. Last night we went out to find el Diablo papel - a paper devil that is ceremonially burned before Xmas. We found it, but it turns ... read more

Oliver: Well, we finally got away. After a pretty full day at school in Welly we flew into brilliantly sunny SF and spent the next 3 days catching up with old friends, checking out the Exploratorium, (Very cool) and otherwise pottering around the city. Near the Exploratorium is the Palace of Fine arts - a giant testament to the USA's own ego, a great big greek style dome. I cant blame 'em - must be annoying, people going 2 europe to see Greek ruins! ' huh we've got ruins an ours r in perfect condition!!' Martin: Louis was very reluctant to get up in the sunny SF mornings (jet lagged)- managed to entice him with the prospect of a bike ride over to Sausalito - the home of a legendary sweet shop his brother visited two ... read more

In early December 2006, the L/H whanau (minus Henrico - who is presently esconced at NMIT in Blenheim) is embarking on an extended adventure through Guatemala, Cuba and Costa Rica. In preparation for the big trip, we joined a 'Spanish for tourists' evening class here in Wellington. Olivier and Luis are picking it up fast and leaving the old fogies for dust. We hope you enjoy following our Central American Adventure. Watch this space! Hasta luego muchachos! ... read more
