Ok, maybe it didn't exactly explode but it sure felt like it was imminent. But let me back up a bit! Our last little excursion out of China found us in Hong Kong and Macau for a week, three nights in each location. We decided to stay in a couple of hotels this time around which I booked online with no problem along with the flights. You never know how its gonna turn out when you blindly make reservations for places you know nothing about but with the variety of travel sites nowadays and the online testimonials, you can get a pretty good idea of what different hotels and/or hostels are like. We arrived in Hong Kong last Sunday night on a sunny, fairly nice day, compared to our last trip there when it rained almost ... read more

It is not every day that we have visitors from the other side of the world drop in to see us but five friends from Canada made the trek to Wuhan as part of their Asian tour itinerary. It was only a two night sleepover but a good time was had by all. It is always fun to see the reactions of those new to Wuhan and this group was no exception. From the crazy taxi rides to the bright lights of the Luxiang shopping area at night, we showed what we could of our new home city in the short period of time we had. Their highlight was the rides in the taxis from our place to Yellow Crane Tower and back. They could not believe the traffic and the lack of rules, nor the ... read more

Slowly but surely, the holiday is winding down. We have moved on to Bangkok for our last few days in and are sitting poolside in 30 something degree weather and sunshine. The flight from Chiang Mai was short, about an hour, and uneventful, one of the smoothest flights we have been on. This week was pretty interesting. We won seven nights at a five star resort anywhere in the world. It was a scratch and win type of thing and Nancy won one of the top prizes. It seems to be legit since the resort company was featured in the local paper opening up a new office in Chiang Mai and they have a huge website. The contest was a promotional event for the company. Never a dull moment! And I got an email from the ... read more

We came here for two or three days but it looks like we are gonna stay for at least a week. We love this place! My nephew and his house-mates suggested we stay at Boon Mee guesthouse when we got here. We tried to call ahead to no avail so arrived in Chiang Mai with the name of the place and that was about it. We took a chance and had the tuk tuk driver drop us off at the front desk of Boon Mee hoping they had a room. They did! For 650 baht a night (about $20 Canadian) we have a large room with our own bathroom, double bed, sofa, table and TV (which we haven't even thought of turning on. And the location is incredible, a five minute walk from the Tha Pae ... read more

We spent the last few days in/on Phuket, a major island tourist destination in the southwest part of Thailand. This is the busiest time of the year so it was packed with vacationing tourists from all over. It could have been any commercialized tourist area in the world except for the million Thai massage parlours that lined every street along with the women all competing to get you to enter the front door. Both of us are still nursing sunburns picked up in Sanya and it was 6 or 8 degrees cooler there. We have burned off our first layer of skin and are now trying to be careful so that the second layer remains intact. Since we stepped off the plane in Thailand, it has been hot, hot, hot. As was predicted, our little bag ... read more

1 beer $2 BBQ street food $1 Fresh fruit pocket change Bottle of water $0.25 Five weeks holiday in the tropics in the middle of winter .........priceless Yes, we are back in Sanya on the south coast of China for the first week of our Spring Festival holiday. Once again we are pigging out on Western food for now at Fat Daddy's and Casa Mia, both a five minute walk from where we are staying. We have had breakfast at Fushan Coffee down the road a couple of times. They don't quite have the North American breakfast thing worked out but it is close enough and the coffee is delicious. They have bacon and eggs, along with a variety of other breakfast choices. And the orange juice is squeezed as you wait. After several months in ... read more

Great music! Great friends! Great food! God, I love this place! Last night we all trekked over to VOX, our nearby weekend hangout, to watch our friend Colin and his band, Man Made Lake, open for the well-known Canadian indie band, Great Lake Swimmers. Outside it was chilly and damp but inside the atmosphere soon warmed up as the evening's music began. A little plug for the venue, "VOX is considered, among Chinese music aficionados, to be one of the country's finest rock clubs. Offering live music almost daily, VOX is situated in Wuhan's student district and regularly hosts China's top bands and DJs, as well as a rotating cast of international bands. In addition to the club's excellent program of events and atmosphere, VOX is also stocked with an amazing selection of beers, offering Belgian ... read more

Whether it is lunchtime, dinner hour or 2 in the morning after a night out at the clubs, you can't beat the street food around here. There are always places to choose from during the day but at night, the number of street vendors explodes wth a variety of food and other items along every sidewalk. And everything is delicious! Although these "meals on wheels" can be found everywhere in the city, there are also several well-known "food streets" where a large number of them congregate. A lot of these areas are found near the numerous universities that dot the city landscape. Mainly because the food is unbelievably cheap, most stuff sells for under 5 kwai or less than a buck, including the beer. Some of the staples are roasted yams, chestnuts, pineapple, flat breads and ... read more

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our far away family and friends!! I hope everybody had a great day. We had a great Christmas Day here in Wuhan. Outside, it was business as usual in the city but inside it was Christmas Day for all us expats. Nancy gave me a foosball game for Christmas which took most of the day for me and my two helpers to asemble. How she got the thing home from the store and up our staircase is a story in itself; let's just say that the box was too heavy for me to move. But with the help of a few mimosas, it finally got put together. For Christmas Dinner, we all gathered at a friends place for a pot-luck for 56 people. A good time was had ... read more
