North America » United States August 14th 2007

14th August - I left San fransisco and flew to San Antonio via Las Vegas, arriving at 1am. Rocky came and picked me up and we went for some food. The first thing that struck me about Texas is just how big it is. It took well over an hour to get to where we were staying. Texas is the 2nd biggest state behind Alaska (i think). Its just massive.. I guess not many tourists come through San Antonia as the accent became a discussion in the diner within an hour of landing. We were staying at one of Rocky's friends dads place. Everyone round there seemed to be very relaxed about security and the hospitalty was second to none. We were staying on what can be best described as a ranch, taking about 5 mintes ... read more

North America » United States July 21st 2007

21st July - LA. Just about as far away in people and culture as you can get from Fiji. We had decided to spend as little time in LA as possible. We did the usual trip down to Hollywood, the boulevard, Hooters etc. Myself and Adi had decided that we were going to head down to San Diego, so we hired a car and off we went. Driving in the States is interesting, big cars, big motorways and they drive on the wrong side of the road.. We arrived in San Diego in the late afternoon, a lovely place, very colourfull, especially as it was the last day of the pride festival. It was also a comic conference which drew 150,000 people in. This made finding a room a bit difficult. We decided to stay for ... read more

Oceania » Fiji July 11th 2007

Fiji is a place that i would never have thought of going to if it wasn't for the lady in Trailfinders suggesting it. It's nicely located between New Zealand and the states, oh and its hot. I had no big plans for Fiji except to enjoy the sun and waite for Adi a mate from home to arrive on the 12th. To then travel on to States. (same guy who flew to Oz to do th East coast with me) I left a very windy Aukland on the 11th and arived in Nandi that afternoon. I had decided to head away from the mainland and sit on a beach in a resort called Octopus in the Waya group of islands & do nothing ! The boat didn't leave again to the moning so i stayed ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand June 20th 2007

So i arrived on the the morning of the 20th June in Chrstchurch in the south island of New Zealand and it was cold. I spent most of the day wandering round, had some lunch, few beers, back to the hostel, few beers, food and a few more beers ! 21st June - Up early to get the flight to Queenstown. Only a 30 minute flight over spectacular scenery and lots of snow capped mountains. I arrived at lunchtime and checked in to Bumbles backpackers (to be my home for the next 9 nights) and caught up with Steve (From Edinburgh & The Whitsundays sailing trip). The day i arrived in Queenstown coincided with the start of the winter festival and the first proper chucking down of snow. So believe it or not the winter ... read more

Oceania » Australia May 25th 2007

So, after a few days not moving it was time to get going and sit on a bus for a while. This next tour was one that very few people do, deciding to fly from Broome to Darwin instead. The Kimberleys were one of my favourite places due to the fact that very few people travel through, a bit more authentic Oz. The tour started on the 25th May (very early). It was a smaller group and a few people i had met before from previous tours, including Brandon and Zara from Grenwich and Valerie from Switzerland (who actually had her 21st on the tour !). We were to be travelling over 2,500 km on what can best described as a big 4 wheel drive fridge. It was our tour guides first tour so he ... read more

Arrived in Sydney on the 17th April with Jim. We got a taxi to Bondi where Graham a mate of ours from Uni lives. He treated us to steak and ribs, which after a few months in Asia went down very nicely. 19th April - Decided to give Graham some space as he was moving house and flew to Melbourne. This was my first day of travelling on my own. I got a train to the centre and checked into a dorm room in a hostel . Dump doesn't even come close. I was in a room with 2 girls from Belgium and it was cheap, so it would do for now. I stayed there for 2 nights before heading to St.Kilda beach on the other side of town - much nicer, however 10 people ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan April 1st 2007

I arrived in Bangkok feeling very much under the weather. Some kind of flu or virus, who knows. All i do know is that i felt bad enough to consider going back to bed instead of watching Man u Vs Blackburn - very worrying.... Jim and I said goodbye to Anat and Raphi and we flew to Surat Thani (down south) then bus then boat to Ko Pha Ngan. Flight took and hour, bus 2-3 hours and then the boat 2-3 again. So i arrived at the port (Thong Sala) mid afternoon. Jim had got the later ferry to guarantee geting a Glastonberry ticket. I had come to this island in Jan 99 and was unsure if i should come back. I had such a great time then, would i still like it now ? ... read more

Asia » Laos March 21st 2007

21st March - Arrived In Luang Prabang. Very quaint. Considering it's the 2nd biggest town/city in Laos. A couple of streets, lots of restaurants, a night market, guest houses and the odd temple. We found somewhere to stay and then went to eat. The restaurant claimed to have had Jamie Oliver over for cooking lessons (not sure if thats a good thing or not) It was lovely if not a bit pricey. Next day we hired a tut tut driver and went to the waterfall and had a picnic - French bread, cheese, pate & wine - how civilized ! Considering the fact that Laos is such a poor country, the choice of food & wine etc is incredible and cheaper than England in most cases.. It's still hard to get your head round a ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City March 6th 2007

6th March Got up at 6am to start what turned out to be a 13 hour journey to Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City. The first part of the journey dragged a bit especialy as we had no lunch. Once we changed buses and then crossed into Vietnam, the journey didn't feel as bad. A new country and its scenery to look at.. Checked into a guest house and went for food & beers with Joel (Canadian) and Kerry (American) who we met on the bus. 7th March - Early start, we went on a 1/2 day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels, about 200km + of tunnels that the Viet Cong built to hide from / fight against the Americans. It was weird going under ground and seeing huge craters where B52's had dropped bombs ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » West » KaĆ“h Kong February 27th 2007

27th Feb After a few days relaxing on the beach it was time to start travelling properly. Early start to get to the port, boat, taxi then Minibus. Met a couple of Sweedish girls, one was a massive United fan. (little Mo) Asked her to marry me, she said yes ! Got to Koh Kong late afternoon, not much there, bit of a contrast. You only stay there one night to get the early boat to Sihanoukville. Arrived in Sihanoukville and checked into a guest house near the beach, had some food and met Paul from Brum as you do ! Then watched the replay of the Reading cup game... Lovely place, however you can't relax on the beach for 2 mins without kids trying to sell you just about anything, or old guys who were ... read more
