South America » Brazil March 3rd 2010

Brazil is a country that I’ve always fancied visiting for various reasons and was always going to be an integral part of this trip. I had allocated roughly 5 weeks for Brazil, finishing off in Rio and the carnival. It’s actually difficult to write about Brazil as I have only seen a fraction of the country & mostly the south of the country up to Rio. Brazil is by far the biggest country in South America and the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas. It is the fifth largest country by geographical area and the fifth most populous country in the world It has powdery white sand beaches, fronting the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of over 7,491 kilometres (4,655 miles). It is bordered on the north by Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and ... read more

South America » Paraguay » Asunciòn January 17th 2010

Paraguay was never on the list of places that I was due to visit. Most South Americans don't think much of the place. It's the second poorest country in South America, ahead of Bolivia, damn hot (up to 45 degrees C) land locked and a turbulent political past. It's the kind of place you only got to if you know somebody, which I did. Strangely, my dad had found a Paraguayan flag and crest in the loft the previous year, apparently we think my grandfather may have been a delegate to the consulate of Paraguay, or just went on holiday there (although a lot less likely as I'm not sure how you would have got there in the 50's). I was hoping to find out more, however the British Embassy for Paraguay is in BA (Argentina), ... read more

South America » Uruguay January 17th 2010

Uruguay is a country that I had decided to visit as an after Buenos Aires / New Year relax by a beach option. I had heard mixed reports about the place, mostly that it was expensive. The time that we decided to visit happened to be smack in the middle the Argentinian summer holidays, so all the wealthy Argentinians and students come to that were heading there, making it a difficult place to get accommodation and not a true representation of the country I guess. Uruguay is a small country, approx the same size as the US State of North Dakota (187,000sqkm) The capital is Montevideo Total population roughly 3.3 million £1 = approx 30 Uruguayan Pesos. The country is famous for it's beaches & winning the first world cup (1930) Popular foods include Milanese sandwiches, ... read more

South America January 10th 2010

Argentina was to be the country that I would spend the most time in during my 6 month trip, about 5 or so weeks all in all I think. Argentina has a mixture of cosmopolitan cities, incredible landscapes, great food and attractive ladies (and men so I'm told) The country has had a turbulent time just about recovering now from the economic crash of 2001, even paying off it's $10 billion debt to the IMF. Argentina stretches from Bolivia to the tip of South America (nearly 3,500km) Attractions include Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Cordoba, Salta, The Lake District, Patagonia and of course beaches on the East coast Argentina has had some unusual history recently, including the Peron Era in the 1940's and 50's (Evita), the Dirty War (1976-83) with an estimated 30,000 people dying (disappearing and tortured) ... read more

South America December 23rd 2009

The Chile and Argentina blogs are a bit mixed up due to the fact that I have been zig zagging in between Chile and Argentina. Think there are 3 Chile stamps in my passport now ! Chile is a strange country geographically, running from Ecuador right down the West coast of South America (unless Bolivia ever get the coast land back, very unlikely though !) Over half the continent. It has 6,435km of coastline Santiago is the capital Population of 16 million Currency is Pesos, roughly £1 = 800 pesos, which makes it quite annoying to work prices out in your head, especially when you often cross into Argentina in the same day and 6 Argentinian Pesos = £1 Chile is famous in South America for Politics (especially General Augusto Pinochet), Pisco (brandy like liquor, also ... read more

South America November 25th 2009

For those that haven't been to Bolivia : Size of France and Spain combined Population - approx 8.8 million Capitals - Sucre (Constitutional) & La Paz (de facto) Famous for High altitude, being land locked & Coca Bolivia is the hemispheres highest, most isolated and rugged nation. It has soaring peaks, hallucinogenic salt flats, steamy jungles and wildlife rich grasslands. Although one of the poorest countries in South America, it's one of the richest in terms of natural resources. Especially with recent discoveries of Lithium mines. Which continually brings up discussions for land to be given back from Chile for export purposes. 4th November - Decided to get the bus at 7.30am from Puno in Peru to Copacabana in Bolivia. It was Puno day on the 5th November but I decided that Puno wasn't worth spending ... read more

So, a few facts about Peru then : Peru is 5 times larger than the UK. Famous for Machu Picchu (Trekking - Inca trail) Capital - Lima Currency - Soles (just over 4 to the £) Population just over 22 million Languages - Spanish, Quechua & Aymara Peru's geography varies hugely between desert, sierra and jungle. Over half of Peruvians live below the poverty line with unemployment out of control and difficult to measure. With many jobless working as street vendors, selling anything from clothes to chocolates. About 45% of Peru's population is purely indigenous, making it one of the 3 Latin American countries to have such high indigenous representation. 80% of Peruvians are declared Roman Catholic, although often combining traditional beliefs into church festivals. Football inspires passionate fanaticism although the national team hasn't qualified for ... read more

South America » Ecuador » South October 22nd 2009

This chapter of the travel blog will be a nice short one for 2 reasons. The first being that I've already been to Ecuador once before heading north to Colombia and secondly as a result of going North I don't have a great deal of time to get to Cuzco in Peru. I don't like making too many plans or sticking to time and dates, however you need to book the Inca trail in Cuzco at least 3 months in advance of going and I've already paid a lot for it, so I'm getting there by the 22nd October one way or another. I have also booked a flight from Lima in Peru to Cuzco on the morning of the 20th, giving me exactly a week to get through Ecuador and across half of Peru, i.e. ... read more

South America » Colombia October 15th 2009

Colombia - Capital, Bogotá Famous for coffee, emeralds, plastic surgery, cocaine & the FARC Currency - Pesos, $1 = 2355, £1 approx 3,000 Population 43 million Now first of all the plan was to go south through Ecuador and into Peru after the Galapagos Islands, so my time in Colombia was always going to be rushed. I was very apprehensive about going to Colombia due to the general negativity and paranoia about the place, however everybody that has actually been says how wonderful the place is and the people are. My thoughts were that if I used my common sense and stayed away from areas that are clearly dodgy then all should be well. Those areas tend to be bordering the jungle where the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) control everything, mostly cocaine growing and ... read more

South America » Ecuador October 4th 2009

Friday 4th / Saturday 5th September 2009 - Left Manchester at 5pm to get the 7.15pm flight to Amsterdam. Bit of a nightmare journey after that. The flight from Amsterdam flew over London to Bonaire (which I think is just north of Venezuela, approx 10 hours. We then let off passengers and gained a few having not been let off the plane. We then flew to Guayaquil (S. West of Ecuador) to drop off more people and collect some more, to then fly back on ourselves to Quito. In total about 14 hours and not getting off the plane once. In total 4 take offs and landings and 18 hours door to door, nice ! Anyway that's the long haul flight out of the way till the end of February. Before I start with the blog ... read more
