Hello Everyone!

We have left Bhutan... and now cycled over 7200km through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia (Sumatra, Java and Bali)! We are now finishing off our time in Indonesia and soon will be heading over to Australia.

We are really looking forward to catching up with everyone when we are home (mid-May).

Love Andy and Mel

Bandung (Java, Indonesia) to Perth (Australia): Final Distance (since 20 Dec): 7280km The Indonesian island of Java is a busy place. Not much bigger than the UK, but with a population three times that of the UK – it is rather chaotic. Very proud of ourselves and with bodies in pieces having cycled through Sumatra, we felt no shame at all in using a little bit of public transport to save ourselves spending hours on very busy roads alongside thousands of mental lorry drivers. Thus we scooted across much of the island by bus, with our bikes in the luggage compartment below us. Our first stop was with Mel’s Dad, his wife Amy, and their MASSIVE Indonesian family in Bandung. Arriving broken wrecks we were well looked after, pampered, and had the wonderful time that we ... read more

Bukittinggi (Sumatra, Indonesia) – Bandung (Java, Indonesia): Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 6927 km We have made it through the plantations, the jungle, along the coast and over the mountains to reach the southern-most point of Sumatra! With one final cockroach infested hotel (Mel squeaked whilst on the loo, as a cockroach scampered over her legs), we rolled into the port of Bakauheni and onto the boat – Java bound. What a relief! What pride! Cycling hot, hilly, humid, bumpy, sticky, insecty Sumatra, as the subject of everyone’s curiosity has been the hardest thing we have ever done – it has roasted, poached, smashed, pummelled and drained us. Sumatra turned out to be MUCH bigger than it looked on the map, and it has a climate apparently designed to upset cyclists. A truly beautiful ... read more

George Town (Malaysia) - Bukittinggi (Sumatra, Indonesia): 4th - 17th March 2013 Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 5654 km Imagine that you have popped into a quiet UK town to do some shopping. Today, however, you are 8 foot tall, have chosen to wear a hat that has a neon flashing sign reading “LOOK AT ME”, and you are wearing a suit made entirely out of daffodils. Furthermore, instead of arriving in town conventionally (by walking, or by car, for example), you have trotted into town astride a rhinoceros. The two of us are putting on the equivalent of this spectacle in Sumatra. We have found ourselves in places that receive no visitors, and quite frankly... we look a bit odd. AND we are travelling in a bizarre fashion (bike). We get A LOT ... read more

Aranyaprathet (Thailand) - Penang (Malaysia): 7th - 28th Feb 2013 Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 4735 km In some of our earlier blog entries we showed off about the challenges we faced from cycling through Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. However, we have found that our fantastic trip down the Thai peninsular (i.e. the bit that looks like an elephant's trunk) with all its beaches and seaside towns has left us little hardship to boast about, but plenty of 'gloatable' times instead. Much like swimming in chocolate, Thailand has been rather pleasurable, gluttonous at times, and resulted in us being quite brown. We’ve still covered some big miles, but on this stage our ‘off-the-bike’ days have incorporated Scuba diving (Ko Tao), climbing (Krabi), and eating pancakes on the beach (everywhere). So, a few lists about ... read more

Banlung (Cambodia) to Aranyaprathet (Cambodia-Thai Border): 29th Jan - 6th Feb 2013 Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 3281 km Mel's Aunty Dawn showed concern (in an email to us) that Mel had resorted to washing her hair with a bar of soap, and Andy had denied her any make-up in place of a spare bike chain. However, despite losing these luxuries, it is still of paramount importance that we look good. It isn't just about the journey, the cycling, the experience... it is also about a flawless complexion and good skin. How is this achieved? We considered Estée Lauder skin treatments... we investigated plastic surgery. We settled on the Cambodian Complexion regime. This regime gives you the full range of spa treatments, without ever getting off the bike, you then arrive in at your ... read more

Hué (Vietnam) to Banlung (Cambodia): 17th - 27th Jan 2013 Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 2591.60 km (.... what is this the same as... go on... what do you think? have a look at our stats at the bottom of the page!) Following Mel's short-lived attempt at cutting Andy's hair with nail scissors, we headed out of Hué. Aware that our proposed route was marked on the map as the "Road without joy" (see photos), we were keen to knuckle down and do it quickly. What followed was some fairly hard-core cycling (to us, anyway.) We discovered that our map is useless - it has been the compass that we have used for navigation in an effort to remain off this main highway. Many roads marked on our map seem to have been put ... read more

Thakhek (Laos) to Hué (Vietnam): 11th Jan 2013 - 17th Jan 2013 Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 1879.90 km (YES! Over 1000 miles!) Bouyant from a remarkable game of scrabble (Andy went 'all-out' in his first two goes, and was rather proud of himself, Mel got 'crazed' on a triple word score), the cycle on from Thakhek was predestined to be easy-peasy. It wasn't. What followed was 5 days into a strong headwind. Now... cyclists may be able to appreciate the pain of a headwind, non-cyclists may not. As an analogy, imagine you are making a cake. Not too complicated, you say.... But wait... instead of whisking in eggs and sugar.... you are whisking setting concrete. AND - the only implement you have to whisk the concrete into your cake, is a floppy flannel. ... read more

Luang Prabang (Laos) to Thakek (Laos): 30th Dec 2012 - 10 Jan 2013 Distance covered so far (since 20 Dec): 1361.73 km New Year was difficult this year. Mel was upset when she discovered that Andy had fibbed. The 'mushrooms' in her noodle soup at lunchtime weren't mushrooms - it was stomach lining, and Andy knows that he really should have been more honest with her. That evening, Andy was a little upset when Mel decided that too much money had been spent, and our celebratory New Year dinner would be at the accurately named 'Grilled Goat Restaurant', and NOT at the more promisingly named 'Properly Grilled Goat Restaurant' just next door. Furthermore, New Year was spent doing some of the hardest hills that we have ever had to contend with. A few of the days ... read more

Chiang Rai (Thailand) to Luang Prabang (Laos): 20 Dec - 27th Dec Our vision (as many of you know) was to cycle from Bhutan (where we were), to Australia (where Mel's bro Martin is). But there were a few problems... 1. It seemed like an awfully long way. 2. Crossing into Burma by land is not possible (legally). 3. Avoiding Burma, we'd have had to go over mountain passes into Tibet, in the middle of winter, which would be closed because of the weather (brrrrr). So... we made a new and improved vision. This new vision cuts out the tricky bits above, and has seen us set off from Northern Thailand. With this vision in mind, to head South on our Southerly bike ride, we spent the first 4 days cycling Northwards. In brief: Thailand: A ... read more

December 18th 2012

Sadly our time in Bhutan had to finally come to an end. Having had such an amazing time, both through our rewarding work, and through the never-ending hospitality of our Bhutanese friends, we left Thimphu with heavy hearts. As we wrap up this chapter on the blog, there are some photos which we are rather proud of, which never got uploaded earlier. Our home is no longer our lovely Thimphu flat - it is now two bikes (Surly Long Haul Truckers), accompanied by six small bags. We'll be telling you more about this in the weeks to come! In the meantime, have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS! We will be somewhere in Northern Laos (probably fixing a puncture by the side of a road). Much love , Andy and Mel... read more
