Woke up rested on Saturday Morning. Even though it looked like rain and rain was predicted, we chanced it and decided to hike up Humpback Rocks. We sure were happy we did! Definitely a fun and tiring hike (especially because the path was still icy in many spots.) The view from the top was very impressive for a flatlander like myself. Feeling as if we earned it, we went to Paulie’s Pig Out ! The link will give you my full review of the experience(large portions, epic mac & cheese, good ribs). Everything I tried was excellent. Continued up the road to Devil’s Backbone brewery. Ranked above Blue Mountain Brewery, but slightly below Starr Hill Brewery. They had good IPAs, a quality ESB, and a good summertime brew called Garland. We also munched on a giant ... read more

Trip is based off of this article in Draft Magazine. Drove from Maryland down to the Charlottesville area in VA. Luckily, there was almost no traffic, leaving at around 2pm. First stop: Starr Hill Brewery! They don’t have a restaurant, just a tasting room at the bottling facility. Inexpensive sampler. Of all the Breweries in this area, the most polished and best tasting top to bottom. Picked-up a cool Roostar Beer/Coffee Sampler (Coffee and Beer: The Dynamic Duo!) Checked into the url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g30223-d82780-Reviews-Afton_Mountain_Bed_Breakfast-Afton_Virginia.htmlAfton Mountain Bed and Breakfast . Everything was great at the Inn. We had substitute innkeepers, but everything was delicious and we rested well the entire weekend. Went to Blue Mountain Brewery for d... read more

Europe » Spain » Castile-La Mancha » Toledo August 3rd 2012

Woke up on day #3, feeling use to the time change and ready to start the day. Today’s departure was from the Atocha station, which we walked to and then it was off to Toledo! (Tip, try using the Renfe website to buy your tickets in advance, you can save money. Honestly though, it can be pain too.) When we arrived at the Toledo commuter rail station, we decided to walk into town. Although walking into town was not efficient, it was a cool way to see the city. The one thing about Toledo is that is very confusing to navigate. On our Spanish adventure, it was the only place where we legit got lost (although getting lost in Toledo is part of the fun!) We visited the Cathedral. After about ten minutes, I realized that ... read more

Europe » Spain » Castile & León » Segovia August 1st 2012

Awaken on day #2 in Spain and it is off to Segovia! Took the effective high speed train after another espresso at the Atocha station. Then hopped on the bus from the Segovia station to downtown(?) Segovia. The first thing you see is the massive Aqueduct. It is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Even the pictures do not do it justice. Walked across town to the Alcazar Castle. Very cool castle, especially enjoyed the Monarch Room, and it was fun to climb up the top and take in the views. Grabbed a delicious lunch at La Frasca (it is in the Fodor’s guide - FYI). Excellent place, sat outside and just took in Segovia. I had a delicious baguette with pork loin, queso, & peppers My gf had the tortilla, which ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid July 31st 2012

Arrived in a Spain after a slight delay in the flight, After taking the commuter rail from the airport to Sol, arrived at the Petit Palace Mayor. The hotel’s location was perfect for exploring Madrid and we had no issues while we were there. The first priority was to get some coffee. After an espresso, the first stop was to the office of tourism to pick up maps of Madrid. Next was walking around the city to hope to combat jet lag and to get acquainted with Madrid, both of these were successful. A recurring theme is walking in Madrid. It was more fun to walk and look at the architecture and people than to take the subway to maybe save 5-10 minutes. First visit was to the beautiful Cibeles Fountain and the nearby Post Office. ... read more

After another unsuccessful morning of wandering to find brunch, we wondered towards the stadium and went to the Loon Pub. It was great, unhealthy bar food. I had the walleye fingers, which had an excellent dipping sauce and the pork soup. We attended the Tigers-Twins baseball game that afternoon. Target Field is a beautiful park that had a bunch of state-fair-type food. Also, since it was 90 degrees outside (after 50s and rain the day before) they had free water jugs around the park, a nice touch. The real excitement of the game came when I cheered a great diving catch by the Tigers and a Twins fan threw their empty drink cup at me. Turning around I said “Seriously?” and they were surprised. Was I suppose to just ignore it? There was no incident and ... read more

In true Minnesota fashion, it went from 70 and sunny to 50 and rainy. Wondered around the downtown area and went to Keys for breakfast. It met the requirements of having sit down breakfast and a Bloody Mary’s. You get a pile of good, hearty Midwestern food. Interestingly, the Bloody Mary’s came with a small Miller High Life. The waiter was sub-par at best, but the homemade jelly is amazing. Being that it was raining and miserable outside, we tried to take the skyway as far as possible to Mac’s on the recommendation of a friend. It was like a giant hamster maze. Eventually we made it to url=http://www.yelp.com/biz/macs-industrial-sports-bar-and-grill-minneapolis#hrid:UPaYisFwqAILhUgvcORvkQMac’s Industrial Bar . It was a great experience and my favorite bar the entire weekend. Great craft beer selection, enough TVs, and excellent execution of bar food ... read more

Landed in Minneapolis on Friday afternoon. Took the transit train into the city from the airport. For $1.75 it took us right down town. Living in Maryland, I saw no one checking the tickets and thought how much they must trust people here. The crew checked into the hotel downtown and went to 8thStreet Grill to get some beers and lunch. I liked that they had beer flights, four different beers in samplers, with each sampler having a theme (From local beers, to seasonals, to IPAs.) The food was fine, not disappointed, but the beer flights were the reason to come back. We meet up with a friend who lives in Minneapolis and they informed us that a ticket for not paying on the transit train was $180. No doubt I would be paying the $1.75 ... read more
