From the Jungles of Tena to Home: Well, our day to start home had finally arrived. We ate our last breakfast in the jungle and got on the bus by 6:30am. The bus had arrived last night, with the driver sleeping onboard. After a very long, rough ride out of the jungle, we stopped in Tena to drop off our interpreters before heading to Quito. The ride from Tena to Quito wasn't nearly as interesting as it was on the way in, since we'd seen it all before, but it was a lot quicker. Besides making fewer and shorter stops to use the restroom, this driver went a lot faster too. We arrived in Quito just after noon and decided to hit the big mall for a couple of hours. Personally, I think this was a ... read more

Day 24 : The jungles of Tena Day 6: Today was our off/fun day. After another good breakfast, we all went down to the boats and headed to the Amazon Rescue Center. After hearing the rulles and grabbing a nice cold Coke, we were escorted around the center. We saw several different varities of birds, including macaws, parrots, and tucans. We also saw a caiman (a sort of alligator), turtles, an oscelot, two jaguars, and several types of monkeys. At the end of the tour, just when we were ready to head to the gift shop, one of the local wild troops of monkeys made their presence known. They were swinging thru the trees above us, occasionally dropping down close to check us out. Pretty cool. After visiting the gift shop, and getting another cold Coke, ... read more

Day 23 : The jungles of Tena Day 5: Another similar start to our day, except this morning I was up even a little later. After a breakfast of eggs, little sausages, and pancakes with syrup, we loaded up the boats and headed upstream for our day with the community. Because of the low water situation, we had to get out of our boats twice and walk across land or beach so the boats could be dragged upstream. Today, our walk thru the jungle wasn't that far or rough. Probably because we were going to the community center that gets a lot of traffic. The community center is basically a large open field, small playground, and a white cement structure that can be used for meetings or whatever. Some kids were already there, so we started ... read more

Day 22 : The jungles of Tena Day 4: Since I got to bed a bit later last night, and read for a while, I didn't get up until almost 6:30am. Of course, Manoli was there ahead of me. Same routine as yesterday, coffee, breakfast, bathroom, and off in the boats. This morning's breakfast was pancakes with syrup, scrambled eggs, and fruit. We only had a few houses to visit between us all, so we knew it would be a shorter day. Our first house a few little ones, so one little girl and I chased baby chickens. The hike to the next house was a looong trek thru the jungle. This house had a few older kids, so after introductions, candy and rubber band bracelets, we went out to play frisbee. We ended up leaving ... read more

Day 21 : The jungles of Tena Day 3: Today started pretty much the same as yesterday, except Manoli get up before me, so I was the second one up and about. After a cup of coffee and checkiing out the sunrise and local flora, the rest of the group roused themselves out of bed and we all ate another hearty breakfast. Breakfast this morning was scrambled eggs, french toast with syrup, and a plantain mixture, all of which was quite tasty and filling. Again, we went down and boarded our boats, carrying the water purification kits, medical supplies, and our lunches for the day. Today, instead of going downriver, we went upriver to the other side of Anaconda Island. Unfortunately, there were a couple places going upriver that the water was too shallow for our ... read more

Day 20 : The jungles of Tena Day 2: I think I must have gone to bed a bit earlier than normal, cause by 5:30am I couldn't sleep any more. Apparently I was the first one up and about, so I wandered around and sort of watched the sun come up. By 6am or so, I noticed someone in the kitchen room and went to investigate. It turned out to be the host, Thomas Moore, getting coffee. Of course, I had to have a cup too. By 7am or so, almost everyone was up and about, and around 8am we all sat down to breakfast. Breakfast was scrambled eggs, cocktail sausages, pancakes with syrup, and a plantain mixture. Everything was pretty good, and prepared us for our day. We all put on our jungle clothing with ... read more

Day 19: Quito to the jungles of Tena: We all left on the bus at 8am. Although it was a 28 passenger bus with only 22 passengers, because we had so much luggage, we filled the rear storage compartment, the back one and half rows of seats, and still had to put some on the roof. The trip was supposed to take 4 to 5 hours, but with all the bathroom stops, congestion, and road work, we didn't even get into Tena until after 3pm. The missionary leaders needed to do some last minute shopping, so we all got off in Tena to use the bathroom again and do a little browsing/shopping. The leader said it would take another hour from Tena to our "lodge", but again it took a bit longer. I couldn't believe how ... read more

Day 17: Otavalo Day 2: We woke up around 6am or so, made coffee, then went out to find some eggs and rolls for breakfast. After breakfast, we walked down to the bus terminal to get a bus to either Cotacachi or Quiroga. We ended up going to Quiroga first. When we arrived at the town sqaure, the driver's assistant had already signalled his brother the taxi driver and when we got off... there was a taxi waiting for us! He originally asked for 5 dollars to take us to Lake Cuicocha, but we'd been told it should be four dollars, so he agreed. After a pretty long trip, we arrived at this beautiful volcanic lake. The taxi driver wanted 15 dollars total to wait an hour and then take us back, but he agreed on ... read more

Day 16: Cuenca to Otavalo via Quito: Today we travelled most of the day (14 hours!), so we didn't take any photos. I'll add photos of our hostal in Otavalo and the little place we ate dinner there just so there'll be some photos. The lady in the hostal in Cuenca called a taxi to take us to the bus terminal at 6:15am. After a short ride, we arrived at the terminal to discover that the express, "direct" bus to Quito would be going afterall. We bought two tickets at $10 each on the Super Taxis Cuence bus and waited to board. It looked like a nice new bus, so we had high hopes. We soon discovered that apparently the word direct doesn't mean the same thing in Ecuador as it does in the states, as ... read more

Day 15: Cuenca Day 3: Today is our day to take the 3-village bus trip from Cuenca to Gualaceo to Chordeleg to Sigsig. After our morning coffee from what we bought at the supermarket, we walked down the nearby stairs to the Bus #7 bus stop that would take us to the Terminal Terrestre (bus station). For 25 cents each, we shortly arrived at the terminal and looked around for an office that sold tickets to Gualaceo. Apparently, this was one of the trips where you just get on the bus and pay the driver's assistant instead of buying tickets ahead of time. We paid one dollar a piece for the one hour trip to Gualaceo. It took a while to get completely out of Cuenca, but eventually we were winding our way thru the mountains ... read more
