Day 14: Cuenca Day 2: After a pretty good night's sleep, we got up, did the necessities and set out to find coffee before exploring Cuenca. Apparently, most Cuencanos either rise late or drink their coffee at home, because we couldn't find any cafes that opened before 8am! We originally figured on having coffee at the neat little Coffeetree Cafe, but they were just getting set up and told us they opened at 8am, so after wandering around trying to find someplace else, we returned at 8:05 to have our coffee there. After capuccinos, we returned to the hostal to pack up our stuff so they could move us to the new room while we were out. Just after 10am, we headed to the plaza where the city tour busses started out, and since the blue ... read more

Day 13: Banos to Cuenca 3: We decided to take the 8:45 bus to Riobamba with a connection there to Cuenca, so we were up fairly early, ate breakfast, and headed to the bus terminal. I'd forgotten and Manoli didn't realize that the trip to Cuenca was so long... about 8 hours! The trip started sort of the way it ended... delays and bad luck. First of all, the bus left over half an hour late. We arrived in Riobamba, and instead of the "terminal" that the lady in Banos had told us we'd be arriving at, we were dropped off on the side of the road, in front of a little office. Our next bus direct to Cuenca was supposed to arrive at 11am, about 15 minutes after we were dropped off. This bus arrived ... read more

Day 12: Banos Day 3: Well, we woke up pretty early again, hoping again to ride mountain bikes down the waterfall route, but it was raining even heavier than yesterday. So it was raining so much, we decided to have breakfast upstairs in the terrace cafe. Manoli and I each ordered a number 2 breakfast which consisted of scrambled eggs, bread and conditments, juice, and coffee. It wasn't bad at all, and not too expensive at $2.50 each. It continued to rain some, so at about 11am we decided to try walking a ways, using umbrellas. We didn't even get out of town before Manoli decided it was very enjoyable this way, so we decided to wait a while longer... maybe after lunch. For lunch, we went to another of the local restaurants to try another ... read more

Day 11: Banos Day 2: We woke up this morning hoping to go mountain biking down the Waterfall Route, but it was raining some from the time we woke up. It wasn't even 7am yet, so we took a walk up towards our nearby waterfall where the famous thermal springs are located. Unbelievably, the main thermal springs near the waterfall were packed with people in their bathing suits, in the cold and rain! Granted, we knew the thermal springs were hot, but it was 7am and it was raining. Since breakfast wasn't included in this hostal, we then went to one of the internet-recommended places, Rico Pan. Manoli ordered fruit & yogurt and I had scrambled eggs, and we both ordered capuccinos. Everything was good and pretty inexpensive. When we returned to the hostal, we gathered ... read more

Day 10: Latacunga to Banos: After a hot shower (interrupted by a brief period of ice cold water), and an okay breakfast, we pacekd up everything and checked out of the hostal. When they heard we were taking a bus to Banos, they told us we shouldn't go to the Terminal Terrestre liked we'd planned, taking one bus to Ambato then another to Banos. Instead, we were told to take a taxi for one dollar to the Puente de San Felipe bus stop to get a direct bus to Banos. That definitely made things easier for us. The taxi driver was very friendly, so we gave him two dollars instead. Within minutes, we boarded the bus to Banos, paying two dollars each. The bus didn't stop all that many times, but we still had to listen ... read more

Day 9: Chugchilan to Saquisili/Latacunga: Well, we managed to wake up at 2:15am, gather our stuff and head to the bus "station" (actually, no station, just where the busses park overnight) for the supposedly 3am bus to Saquisili. Arriving at like 2:40, we waited and we waited, but nobody showed up until 3:15, and they were locals arriving for the 3:30am bus! Oh well, live and learn. Soon after 3:30, the driver showed up and we all got on board. The first part of the trip was very slow, since the roads were bad and it was still totally dark, not to mention the 15 or so times we stopped to pick someone up. Actually, I lost count of the stops about 30 minutes into the 3 hour trip. The road got a bit better and ... read more

Day 8: Chugchilan Day 3: With another good breakfast under our belts, we headed out to hike up to the cheese factory (Queseria in Spanish) by the longer but supposedly less strenuous route. After hiking for over 2 hours, all uphill, with a strong cold wind most of the time, we finally reached the cheese factory. It was a bit of a disappointment because it was a very small operation and the one dollar tour took about 5 minutes. It was interesting though, and the scenery along the way was pretty cool. We also missed the fork to the right we were supposed to take and walked for half an hour in the wrong direction, downhill of course, so we had to walk but uphill all the way to reach the fork. After the brief tour ... read more

Day 7: Chugchilan Day 2: Well, by noon we finally have fairly dependable internet access. We slept nice and cozy last night, waking up around 6am or so. At 7am we ate our first breakfast at Mama Hildas. Either a lot of folks left earlier or came to breakfast later as we only saw 8 or 10 others at breakfast. They served fresh fruit, toast with jam, yogurt, and coffee/tea. It was all good and homemade/fresh, but we missed the more filling eggs or cereal we often get. We both took a nice hot shower, then left about 8am for our first hike from Chugchilan. One of the hostal family gave us a pretty decent map of the area and we'd decided to check out the Cheese Factory (Queseria), Italian Monastery, and/or Canyon overlook. There was ... read more

Again, sorry for the delay. Almost up-to-date now. Day 6: Quilotoa to Chugchilan: Although we both slept well and warm, we started waking up at 5am and were impatient for coffee and breakfast at 7:30am. We went downstairs around 7am and then ate a very decent breakfast of hot coffee, a nice slice of fresh pineapple, a local fruit juice, homemade toast with butter and marmelade, and scrambled eggs. All very good and hearty. After breakfast, we loafed around the room (trying to stay warmish) until about 11am for checkout. We paid our bill then hiked down into the town for the view and a cup of coffee. We obtained both at the nice looking community center overlooking the crater. Feeling like we were mouching off the hospitality, after a while we went to look at ... read more

Sorry for the delay. We just got internet here in Chugchilan. Day 5: Quilotoa: The morning for our departure to the Quilotoa Loop started with a bit of a shock. When I checked on the time the bus to Quilotoa was to leave, the hostal folks told me that on Sunday the only bus leaves at 9am, not 11:30am! Since it was already after 7am, we rushed packing our backpacks, skipped breakfast, stowed our main luggage and headed for the bus terminal. We got our next surprise when we found out that supposedly there was NO bus to Quilitoa that day (although I'm pretty sure I saw when arrive after we'd been there a while) and we'd have to take the bus to Quivedo which would drop us at Zumbahua. The bus was getting ready to ... read more
