Costa Rica 2013: Day 10: Playas del Coco Day 3: Today we'd decided to head to the other nearby beach, Playa Hermosa. After coffee and a good breakfast of fresh fruit and toast with jam, we mounted up. From the map, there was a shorter route from the north end of Playas del Coco, instead of the main street and road we'd come in on the bus. It probably was shorter, but... As we left the town, we started to climb... and climb. It was so steep most of the way that we had to walk our bikes, and even take frequent rests. We finally reached the top, and had some great views of the our beach below. From there, we headed downhill, some of which was so steep we didn't dare ride, so we ended ... read more

Costa Rica 2013: Day 9: Playas del Coco Day 2: When we woke up this morning and their was no coffee, no Andy the clerk, and no WiFi, I went out looking for coffee and found Laura's House B&B, right across the street. When Manoli and I came back to get coffee, we asked about a room. They showed us an available room and told us it was $50/night/room, including WiFi, and they have a cafe that serves coffee and breakfast early in the morning. We quickly decided to move, if Pure Vibes (now Villa Flores) would let us leave and pay for only one night. Well, Andy still wasn't there, but the cleaning lady (his assistant?) said okay. So, paid for the one night, packed up, and moved across the street to Laura's House. The ... read more

Costa Rica 2013: Day 8:Monteverde To Playa del Coco: The hostel had set up a taxi for 5:30am so we'd get to the bus stop well before 6am. We were anxious to see the next place, so we had not problem getting up in time. When we arrived at the bus station, there were only a few other folks waiting, but by the time the bus left at 6 it was pretty full. We then proceeded to return down that nasty gravel 1 1/2 lane road on or way to Lagartos where we'd get off to switch busses. Along the way we must have stopped at dozen times to pick people up, so between that and the nasty road, it took us 1 1/2 hours to travel 35 kilometers! Manoli and I, along with about 6 ... read more

Costa Rica 2013: Day 7:Monteverde Day 3: This morning we'd booked the Hanging Bridges tour at Selvatura. The minivan picked us up, and about 12 others. After a rather long ride, mostly due to rough, winding roads, we arrived at Selvatura. This place has the Hanging Bridges tour, at least one canopy tour, canyonerring, a Tarzan swing, and Butterfly, Insect, and Serpent houses. We were really looking forward to seeing some wildlife, so we got our tickets and headed onto the footpaths towards the first of eight bridges. To make a long story short, we saw almost nothing but plants, a couple of birds, and one centipede! Granted, the trek was enjoyable, there were some pretty cool plants, and the hanging bridges were pretty neat, but that doesn't add up to $30 each worth of enjoyment. ... read more

Costa Rica 2013: Day 6:Monteverde Day 2: This morning we ate our first breakfast in the hostel. Manoli had fresh fruit, coffee, and juice, all good and so fresh. I had some fruit and a decent pancake along with coffee and juice. While Manoli got ready for the day, I went to the ATM to get some cash for the day. Although the machine at Banco Nacional said it gave dollars, all it allowed me to get was Colones. Oh well, next time we'll use the Banco Costa Rica ATM. Our minivan showed up right on time for the trip to the El Trapiche tour we'd booked for 8:45am. Eventhough the tour cost $30 each, it was well worth it! Our excellent guide was one of the owner's sons and he was very informative and sociable. ... read more

Cosat Rica 2013: Day 5:Tortuguero To Monteverde: We woke up at 4:30am to pack up and get our taxi to the village boat ramp. The lodge made us up two bags of fresh fruit for the trip, and there was fresh coffee too. Unfortunately, they didn't remember the cream/milk, so I only drank a bit of it. We arrived at the village boat ramp before the ticket office opened, so we bought the first two tickets to La Pavona. The trip up the canals wasn't as exciting since we'd seen it all before, but we were entertained by the boat pulling into several private places to pick up stuff to deliver to either La Pavona or Cariari. Probably nothing elicit, but it made me wonder. We also had to wait after the first stop for a ... read more

Costa Rica 2013: Day 4: Tortuguero Day 3: 5am comes pretty early! We were at the lodge's docks by 5:15am. While we waited for our guide to arrive, the lodge staff offered to bring us plates of fresh fruit for an impromptu breakfast, so we ate some great fresh pineapple, melon, and watermelon while we waited. Pretty great considering they don't serve breakfast until 7am. They even asked us if we would be wanting breakfast a bit late. We told them we'd have lunch in the village, but we'd definitely be here for dinner tonight. Just as we were starting to wonder about our tour, a launch from the lodge left for the village to pick up some staff just as the guide came into sight.... having rowed all the way across from the village! Cosat Rica 2013: Day 3:Tortuguero Day 2: After our late night of unsuccessfully looking for turtles, we woke up a bit later than usual... at 7:30am. Today is our 39th wedding anniversary, so we plan on doing and eating whatever we want to. We'd already told the lodge staff we wouldn't be eating dinner in the lodge. Around 8:30 or so, one of the lodge staff knocked on our door and asked if we would be eating breakfast today, I assume because it was nearing the end of the breakfast service. We told him thank you, but no, we don't usually eat breakfast. I should mention that the room includes breakfast. Oh well. We had a water taxi pick us up around 9am to go into the village for the day, and evening. Tortuguero village is ... read more

Costa Rica Day 2:Alajuela to Tortuguero: After a decent cup of coffee at the hostel, we headed to the bus stop to start our trip to Tortuguero. Rather than bore you with the details of our extremely long trip to Tortuguero, I'll just to a brief synopsis. At right around 7am, we boarded a "Station Wagon" bus to San Jose. The trip took about 20 minutes and cost about 600 Colones each. From the Estacion Atlantico we grabbed a taxi to the Estacion Caribeno, paying 1,500 for the trip. We bought two tickets on the next bus to Cariari at 9am, at 1,600 Colones each, with almost an hour to wait. After a much longer, but more interesting, we pulled into the new Cariari bus station around 10:45 and boarded our final bus soon after 11am. ... read more

Costa Rica: Day 1: Our 6am flight from Pensacola to Atlanta went fine, other than the fact that it was 6am in the morning! We arrived in Atlanta with over an hour to spare before boaring the flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. After getting the obligatory coffee, from McDonalds, we found out they wouldn't be serving a meal during the flight, so went back to McDonalds for carryout breakfast. It turned out that they did serve a light meal consisting of a small turkey and cheese sandwich, cookies, and drinks. Unfortunately, the in-flight movie was Guilt Trip, which we had just recently rented from Redbox. We arrived in San Jose on time, at about 11:49, their time. They are in the Central timezone like Pensacola, but they don't observe Daylight Savings Time, so the 4-hour ... read more
