After yesterday’s trials and tribulations, I was hoping for a better day. It was, in most ways. I didn’t have to walk nearly as far.. only something like 27 kilometers. Also, I made sure to eat lunch along the way. The only real problem was upon reaching Fao, my destination for the day, I found out pretty much all the inexpensive lodging was full! When I left Vila do Conde around 7:30am, I quickly got lost again. This time it worked out because I accidentally took the not-well-marked river route and ended up getting ahead of a number of pilgrims that had left before me. I stopped for a coffee to celebrate, and left my trekking poles behind, walking several blocks before I realized it. Just before I got back to the café, a lady who ... read more

My first day on the Camino Portuguese started well. I woke up about 6:30am and was ready to go by 7:15. Breakfast was free but I didn’t want to wait until 8am to eat, so off I went, to the cathedral to officially start. For the next hours I struggled to find the yellow arrows that marked the way! I’d decided to just take the more popular central route, but in my “wandering” around to stay on the path, I received all sorts of directions from Portuguese people, and ended up on the coastal route after all, too far from the central to be worth the distance and time. I realized I was on the coastal route when I encountered a nice Camino sign, that showed me how I could get to the central route, and ... read more

Although I woke up several times, I slept fairly well until 10am, having gotten to sleep before 10pm! I guess I was really tired and sleepy. In drank a cup of coffee (actually instant cappuccino that I’d bought in a store yesterday), then walked around a bit, mostly down near the river. I got some great photos of both Porto and Gaia, along with one of three young people standing on the railing, yelling, and acting like they were going to jump. They were still there when I crossed back over the bridge to Porto, so I don’t know if they ever actually jumped. I heard later that a lot of times they try to collect “dare you” money before jumping! After I crossed back into Porto, I walked along the river until I found a ... read more

I left my brother-in-law’s house right at 7pm… unfortunately in a bit of a rush, leaving my passport and behind! I didn’t realize it until I was on the bus from Seville to Lisbon. This mishap was just one of many. Raphael, my other brother-in-law, took me to Jerez de la Frontera, about 25 minutes away in his car, dropping me off at the bus station. The day before I’d bought tickets online through a website called Busbud for the bus line ALSA, for 82 Euros. They were a bit more expensive than Rome2Rio, but simpler. I was supposed to take bus from Jerez to Lisbon, then switch to another one from there to Porto, with emphasis on supposed to! Raphael was long gone when I found out that no ALSA buses left from Jerez. The ... read more

We left our house in Simpsonville around 8am, heading to Joint Base Charleston. The flight to Rota Spain was still scheduled for roll call at 1510 (that’s 3:10 pm for non-military folks) and still showed 52 seats firm. We arrived at the passenger terminal before noon, and all was well. Actually, we were Ejust about the only folks there at that time. After checking in, we went to the commissary and exchange to find something to eat for lunch, and pass some time. I ended up getting some fresh sushi and Manoli got a dish of seafood salad. We ate our lunch in the food court (the only food place open was a Subway), then headed back to the terminal. When they called roll call, only 7 passengers were present, including the two of us! Well, it's that time again... vacation. This year we hope to catch a flight on Sunday from JB Charleston in South Carolina to Rota Spain. My wife is travelling with me this time to visit her family, while I try to wear out my feet again. Some of you may remember my trek 2 years ago on the Camino Frances. 500+ miles in 35 days, of enjoyment! I still communicate on a regular basis with some of the friends I made on that walk, but was unable to convince any of them to join me again this time. This time I'll be walking the Camino Portuguese. 360 miles from Lisbon Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, hopefully in about 25 days. We'll land at the naval base in Rota Spain, where hopefully my brother-in-law Antonio ... read more

4-Day Trial Walk – Day 3: After dinner and day 2’s blog, I got an excellent night’s sleep at my buddy Richard’s house. I was up and on my way by 8am. Richard, the kind friend he is, was concerned about me continuing and offered to take me to my next stop, or maybe half way. I graciously declined, since I intended to do the whole 4-day walk to Chimney Rock or at least Lake Lure. The first leg was a bit tough, with a lot of ups, but I finally made it to my first rest stop at the W.E. Willis Grocery around 9:30, where I had a steak biscuit and an iced coffee. I was going to get a cherry danish, but some guy saw me get it and recommended one of their homemade ... read more

After a miserable night’s sleep of waking up every hour or two, and feeling cold often, I was awake and ready to go before 9am. My wife took me back to Landrum, at the intersection of I26 and Hwy 14, about where I would have reached yesterday, if I hadn’t gone in the wrong direction. Today I wasn’t carrying my backpack, just my fanny back with two bottles, so the 20 plus miles to Lake Lure shouldn’t be too bad. I turned onto Red Fox Road, walked a mile or so and realized I should have used the restroom back at the gas station where my wife dropped me off! I knew there wasn’t any gas stations or stores for quite a few miles, but when I spotted a church, and realized it was Sunday, I ... read more

After a restless night’s sleep of maybe 4 to 5 hours, I climbed out of my Jeep, took care of the morning rituals, then packed everything up in my backpack. I grabbed a small cappuccino at Dunkin Donuts at the airport and hit the road around 8:30am. My backpack was obviously heavier than the fanny pack with 2 bottles that I’d used the day before. Just like yesterday, I had a printout of the route to walk, with verbal directions when to turn along with possible places to stop for lunch, water, or just a rest. My first stop was at QT at the end of GSP Drive to get a cold bottle of water to which I added my Emergen-C powder for flavor. I guess I hadn’t mentioned yet that I strongly dislike the taste ... read more

4-Day Trial Walk: Day 1: I left the house a bit later than I’d wanted to… about 9:30am. After parking my car in the Hertz garage at Greenville Spartanburg Airport (GSP), I rode back home with my wife, get my stuff together and started walking around 11am. After walking through our lovely neighborhood, I continue down Neely Farm Road, past W. Georgia Road, until I decided to take a break at the SpinX gas station on E. Standing Springs Road around 12:30pm, where I took my shoes off while I enjoyed a Cheerwine Icee or Slurpee. Can you say brain freeze? LOL Along the way I met a little friend on the side of the road, see the photo. Fortunately although the snake had its head reared up and mouth open, it was quite dead. My ... read more
