Although I woke up several times, I slept fairly well until 10am, having gotten to sleep before 10pm! I guess I was really tired and sleepy. In drank a cup of coffee (actually instant cappuccino that I’d bought in a store yesterday), then walked around a bit, mostly down near the river. I got some great photos of both Porto and Gaia, along with one of three young people standing on the railing, yelling, and acting like they were going to jump. They were still there when I crossed back over the bridge to Porto, so I don’t know if they ever actually jumped. I heard later that a lot of times they try to collect “dare you” money before jumping! After I crossed back into Porto, I walked along the river until I found a good place to eat lunch. I don’t remember the name of the place, but it’s visible in the photo. I ordered fish cakes (instead of the Portuguese term), a cup of coffee, and a tart. The fish was rather dry and the coffee was the size of an expresso, so I snatched sips of the Coke I had stashed under the table. When I got
back to the hostel it was a little after 2pm and I found out they had a free walking tour at 3:15pm.
Needing something to pass the time, and liking the idea, I signed up. It was free but you can tip the guide at the end. We spent the next 3 and a half hours walking around north-central Porto listening to our guide explain about all sorts of places and things. She spoke excellent English even though she was born and raised in Porto. In the end, around 7pm, I gave her a 4 euro tip and walked back to the hostel. Shortly after I asked about a place nearby that served tapas, an inexpensive meal and was directed to Tapas & Friends, and even got a map. Unfortunately, the map wasn’t that specific, so I ended wandering around a bit before I found it. It was a nice enough place, but they didn’t have many actual tapas… more like raciones (a bigger serving size. I ended up ordering patatas bravas (lightly fried potato chunks with mayonnaise and BBQ sauce), a fruit salad, and a Pepsi. I the potatoes,
which were quite good, but then waited 20 minutes after I finished them and still no fruit salad. I ended up cancelling the salad and headed back to the hostel, wandering around a bit again (read as got lost a bit).
Tomorrow morning, as early as I can wake up, I pack my backpack and start my Camino. I still need to look over my material I have on my Camino app, so I can’t say right now where I’m stopping my first. See you then and there. Oh, and in case you don’t see photos today, it’s because I got sleepy and went to bed.
