Since we'd seen so much of Innsbruck yesterday before checking into the hostel, we had to walk quite a ways to see our first sight. Heading towards the one place I wanted to visit, the Glockengiesserei, or Church Bell Museum and Factory, we passed by a few new sights, especially on Marie-Theresien Strasse. The Spitalkirche was decent and the Hard Rock Cafe was a must see too. Near the beginning of the long street that became Leopoldstrasse later, you can see the Marie-Theresien Statue and the Triumphpforte. The Marie-Theresien Statue makes a great photo with the Alps in the background. The Triumphpforte reminds me of the Arc de Triomph, as I'm sure its supposed to. As we neared the Church Bell Museum, we spotted the Bergisel Ski Jump/Panorama at the end of the street, waaay up ... read more

Yesterday we met a young South Korean girl named Chi yesterday evening when she checked into our room. She was very nice and able to speak and understand English pretty well. Her and Manoli got to talking a lot, so this morning when we were packing up to leave for Innsbruck and found out she was going there too, we offered to give her a ride. We found out along the way that she already had reservations at the same hostel as we did, the Youth Hostel Fritz Prior-Schwedenhaus. The trip to Innsbruck was pretty short, at around 100 kilometers. We quickly passed into Austria, and realized we hadn't stopped to get our U.S. passports stamped. We'll ask at the Rathaus or Police Station to make sure we don't need the stamp. We might get it ... read more

Well, today marks the end of our Romantic Road, or "Ende der romantischen Strasse" as the sign reads, portion of our vacation. We went to sleep last night, pleased that we were the only ones in our 6-bed dorm room, but were awaken sometime after 11pm by someone trying to open the door, that we'd locked from the inside. Apparently, a couple had either just checked in, that late, or left nothing in the room earlier and finally came back. We wanted to be up and at the ticket center for the castles by 7:30am, so we had to be very quiet, and imaginative getting ready to leave. We arrived with our car at the parking area near the ticket center just before 7:30, being only the second car to enter the lot. There were however ... read more

We ate our last breakfast in the Donauworth Hostel, then packed up and hit the road. We'd decided to make one stop on our way to Fussen, at the world famous Weiskirche. It lies between Steingaden and Wildsteig, about 30 kilometers from Fussen. Most of the trip there was on 4-lane roads or at least occasional 3-laned, so it didn't take us long to get there, even with the occasional tractor on the road. Yes, quite often you will see a farm tractor ambling along a busy highway in Germany. The Weiskirche was built in the 1740s to house a statue of the scourged Savior that had reportedly shed tears. Since then, millions of pilgrims have visited this church, supposedly a million or more a year recently. The church was very impressive both outside and inside. ... read more

Another heavy breakfast and off we went, this time back to see the Harburg Castle or Schloss Harburg. We reached the south side of Harburg, remembering the north side road up was closed last time, and after a couple false starts, I found the Schloss Strasse road that took us to the castle. It was almost 10am, opening time, but we took some photos and by the time we reached the ticket office the 10am tour had already started. We paid our 3 Euros each to enter the castle grounds (the actual tour was hourly and cost another 4 Euros) and the WC to take care of business. This castle was much closer to my idea of a castle versus some others that have been more like a palace than a castle. It had several towers, ... read more

We decided today to visit Nordlingen, one of few German towns with a more or less complete medieval wall, and maybe stop to visit the Harburg Castle on the way back. We had the same basic assortment of food for breakfast, including various meats, cheeses, cereal with fruit, rolls with jam or cream cheese, and of course coffee or cappuccino. After breakfast, we headed out in our car, hoping we'd have a good parking spot when we returned. The trip to Nordlingen was about 30 kms, on the typically small two-lane roads, which were kept in excellent condition. We'd noted very few bad spots so far on any of the roads, and numerous occasions where they were fixing what few bad spots there were. Although almost always only two lanes, on some of the major stretches ... read more

After yesterday's long day of traveling and sightseeing, we decided to take it easy today. After breakfast, we strolled down the main streets, Pflegstrasse and Riechstrasse looking for the tourist office we'd noticed last night. Along the way we passed the famous Kathe Kruse Puppen-Museum (Doll Museum) that we knew we wanted to visit, but figured we'd wait until after we visited the Tourist Information Office. This office, as usual, was in the Rathaus or City Hall. We found a decent map and flyer, then started following the numbers of interesting sights from there. The walking tour map started on Insel Ried or Isle of Ried, which we'd checked out last night. We passed through the Rieder Tor (Rieder Tower) and then walked around the tiny island, looking for anything interesting. It is a pretty island, ... read more

We packed up our stuff, ate our final breakfast in Creglingen, loaded the car, and headed out. We had decided to stop in a few places between Creglingen and our next layover in Donauworth. Our first stop was in Schillingsfurst. I had originally told Manoli this town probably wasn't worth stopping in since it had so few sights, but when she noticed it had a castle, she wanted to stop there. Schillingsfurst is a fairly small town, even by our recent standards. Since we had no information to speak of, much less a map, I'd put the location of the Tourist Information Center in the car's GPS. When we were more or less there, Manoli noticed a good looking place to park which was also near the sign that said Rathaus or City Hall. This is ... read more

Today started like our previous days, we woke up around 7:30 or so, did our morning duties, went down for another decent breakfast in the hostel, climbed in our car and away we went. Today we planned on checking out Lauda-Konigshofen, about 40 kilometers away. I had found a map showing a walking tour of the town with about 20 or so sights, but hadn't printed it out, figuring it wouldn't be clear/big enough to read. We also figured we could pick one up at the town's tourist information center. Well, first of all, although I knew Lauda-Konigshofen was two towns more or less joined together, I didn't realize the two parts were that far apart, or that the only Tourist Information Center, in Lauda, we found we be so small with so few pamphlets. We ... read more

This morning we woke up again around 7:30, went down for breakfast, then headed out for some more sightseeing. We'd decided yesterday that we'd like to see/tour the Lindleinturm Museum. It looked so cool, being a tiny house sitting on the top of a section of medieval-looking wall, but it had been closed when we arrived Thursday, only opening for limited hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Rather than drive down into town and try to find a proper parking spot nearby, we just walked down. Sure enough, it was open, and there were no other people waiting. That is important, since they only allow 6 people in at a time, its that small! We climbed the first short flight of stairs to find an older German lady sitting there waiting for us. When she found out ... read more
