013 01 06 BHB Banded jawfish spitting. Movie. Today I had 2 options. Go east and try to get a better shot of the seahorses or do something different and try the video mode on my slr. I decided to go for the second. I read the manual in the car on the way to BHB and off I went straight to the one interesting subject that is readily available at the moment. It took me a couple of seconds to find my jawfish with blue eyes, its eggs were more developed than last time I saw it. It was so full that it couldn’t close its mouth. I landed and slowly approached, pre-focused and it started pumping like it was going to spit. I hit the record button and it spit a few seconds after. ... read more

I went to get a different shot of the red eggs. While looking for the banded jaw fish I saw a huge banded in a hole and six different pairs of dusky jawfish. I am not sure if they had eggs because one of each pair wouldn’t come out. That area is hot for jawfish at the moment. I also saw a few bumblebee shrimp and a tiny juvenile black scorpion fish. Diane marked 2 baby octos covered by shells in holes. People unknowing remove the bottles which are homes to many critters.. I also saw 2 tiny dragonet’s very playful and travelling around, lots of different size batfish, flying gurnards and a couple of flabellinas. My blue eye banded jawfish was very skittish and I had doubts it was the one that spit for me ... read more

The last few dives I dove as a spotter and without a camera because Steve's luggage was lost at custums. We managed to put together a Nikon D200 for me to shoot stuff around. I was eager to find something to photograph. I explored the north side of the fishing pier. The viz was amazing. But I was concerned the fishing lines from the fisherman were I bit to close to me and I didn’t have a knife to free myself in case I got “hooked”. After I while I returned to the pile of pilings under the fishing pier and I shot a medium size batfish with blue eyes and I found a pretty shell with a blenny laying in it. No eggs. No eggs? Where are the blenny eggs? last year we where ... read more

Roatan Dive 16 Yawning hamlet Nikon D200 I spent the dive following my Juv hog fish cleaning different fish. I was diving with the Nikon D200 set up and it took me a few dives to get used to it. I had not taken a shot of them yet. I saw 4 of them. I scared 3 before I figured out that I was very aggressive approaching them. When I got to the 4th I approached slowly and let them get used to me. I actually watch them eat some masked ... read more

12 19 2012 Roatan Dive 12. Mating eels We had a late start. I missed my deadline for Ocean Views. The system took my payment but not the uploads. We dove the Coco View West Wall once again. Steve spotted sargassum on the surface. I grabbed a piece and I noticed a weird shrimp on it. I bolted off to grab SK fin and I guess I lost the shrimp with the current. I grab another piece and It had 3 shrimp in it: a sargassum shrimp, a stripped clear one and a tiny whiny one. I tried to hold it steady for SK but the surge was moving us not even holding my breath. I took them a little deeper but the water was a bit disturbed and it was difficult to focus. I hope ... read more

Roatan Dive 8. East Coco View wall We didn’t do the night dive and didn’t wake up for a 6 am dive. We went on the quest for the big eye with the huge isopod on its front head. Diane said it lives “to the left - just past where the wall really starts, near the big overhang, go a little further than the overhang in around 25'. There is a small cave in one of the crevasses. Back in there is a big eye with a HUGE isopod on it's forehead”. We didn’t see it but definitely going to look for it again. Steve found Diane’s whip coral shrimp and got it with a nice blue background. Thanx Diane for that one. I will post the shot if he gives me the ok. When Steve ... read more

Roatan Dive 4. Mary’s Place. Mary’s Place is an amazing deep crack (70 ft) for 200 ft and a little turn to towards the end. Amazing for wide angle silhouette shot of a diver vertical to the wall. I had plan for the wide angle but the buttons were stocked and couldn’t adjust settings. Also I forgot to turn strobes off. I don’t need them for a silhouette. I felt like a complete amateur. DM Marcus promised me to plan a repeat for us and maybe I can get a shot. 2012 12 16 Roatan Dive 1. Check out dive. Coco View has a mandatory rule for new divers: Assist an orientation meeting where they talk about all the rules and procedures, watch a 24 min video that is pretty informative and they top it off with a check out dive and there is no way out of it. I was assigned to a group of about 7 divers all pretty average except for one that kept going up and down to the point that had every body worried. I signaled the DM that I would stay with the group and waited for him while he ascended and assisted him. We went to the left from the entrance towards the Coco View wall. I saw a couple of Hamlets, a lime green mantis (My friend Judy took ... read more

One of the rules of underwater photography is to take a test shot after you set up your gear. Well. I skipped that step and I tested my camera just before the dive to find out that I put an empty battery in it. Very amateur. Lucky there was half empty one in the box of spares in the car and I could take about a 100 shots in my dive. I just had to pick and choose my shots. I headed south just off the parking lot and I saw a school of fish completely messing up the great viz. I dove around the rocks. There was lots of life. Lots of fish everywhere and lots of action. I saw at least 6 of redish seahorses around the same area and 4 of them very ... read more
