A Birthday to Remember We had planned this trip before we even moved to China. My mom and dad had always planned to come to visit us in China before my dad got sick and he thought it would be really cool for us all to celebrate my 40th Birthday on the Great Wall of China. It was sad that my parents weren’t able to make the trip but we decided to make plans around the date of my birthday as my dad had wanted. They would be with us in spirit and I was taking enough photo’s to send to my dad so it would seem like he was really there!!! Our trip….. first stop on this vacation was in Xian, home to the Terracotta Warriors. We were staying at the “Hyatt” hotel in the ... read more

I go out for lunch or shopping or many more things with my friends here but it is always a lot of fun to hang out with other families or with other couples. We seem to have been doing that a lot just lately and it has been a blast!!! Karaoke…. Well it was Friday night and Kevin was going out with the “boys” and Liz’s husband was out of town on business so she invited the girls and I over to her apartment for a karaoke night with her and her boys. It sounded like fun although I am not one for singing in public. Sure I have belted out a few tunes with my sisters at family gatherings and like most people I have imagined pop stardom as I sing in the privacy of ... read more

The girls and Kevin both had a Monday off for "tomb sweeping". The Chinese have this day so that they can go and pay their respects to the dead and I assume clean up their graves. To us it was a day off and gave us a long weekend to enjoy. Saturday was a washout unfortunately, which meant we would just enjoy a very lazy day. It was so lazy that I took a nap in the afternoon which is something I never do! We enjoyed lots of games and TV with the kids and then in the evening we had our very first takeout delivery since we have been here in Hangzhou. There is a service called "Sherpa" which has menu's for many restaurants in a booklet and all you have to do is call ... read more

After a horrendous journey we finally made it to the Holiday Inn Resort in Phuket at 1am in the morning. The day had started very well with a flight from Hangzhou to Hong Kong. No problems with the first flight so we were optimistic about the next two. Hong Kong is a really efficient airport so even our tight transfer time became very easy and stress free. On to flight no.2……disaster!! Well not literally but it felt like it at the time. Due to a problem with one of the engines which was discovered as we were taxing up the runway we were forced to sit on the plane for 3 ½ hrs (with no AC) before it was repaired and we were cleared to fly. We couldn’t have chosen a flight with a small plane. ... read more

I thought that I had published this 2 weeks ago .....sorry! So what happened in the Wilson household for the rest of the week?? Well, first let me tell you about our visitor. Our friends and neighbors were going on vacation and so we offered to look after their dog Sugar for them while they were away. We miss our dog Charlie so much so we decided it would be nice to have a dog roaming around the apartment for a while!! Kevin was a little unsure but agreed and actually loved having her lying on the end of our bed like Charlie does and snuggling up on the couch. Of course all of you that know Charlie know that he is a 25lb Cocker Spaniel that doesn’t really take up a lot of space.. Sugar ... read more

It's Tuesday afternoon and I am lucky enough to be sitting on a comfy chair on my balcony enjoying the beautiful weather that we have here in Hangzhou today. The temperatures are in the low 70's F today and after spending the day with my friends shopping and stopping for lunch at a local tea house, I am now enjoying the peace and quiet of this tranquil afternoon. (Can you tell that the girls are still at school!!!) I feel like the last week or so has been very busy here so I may need to write about our adventures on several blogs so bare with me.... Saturday 7th- We were invited with some friends to a day out with our driver Shen De. He is the head of his "tea" village and so he wanted ... read more

Well we have lived here in Hangzhou for 5 1/2 weeks now and OK, it isn't a long time, but the first month was always a milestone in my mind so I thought I would give you an update on all the day to day happenings that have been going on and my impressions so far. Life is certainly different!! We are settling in very well and there are good days and there are days when things are difficult. I am happy to report though that it has been a long time now since we have had a "bad day". The girls are happy at school. Sophie's teacher says she is working hard and is a great help in the class in promoting the English language. She is the only child with English as her native ... read more

The Wilsons visit Shanghai (Feb, Friday 13th - Sunday 15th) As I write this I am sitting in the lounge on the 24th Floor looking down over the lit up city skyline of Shanghai. The view is great as I sit here being waited on with my tea!! (there is no alcohol in this lounge unfortunately). Kevin is an executive member at this hotel chain so we are able to drink here and have snacks here for free. It is certainly a different way of life at the moment. Its not going to last so I am trying to make the most of it!!!! Reality will come and bite me in the ass before I know it!!!! Anyway let me start at the beginning with our trip. Our journey here was supposed to take about 2 ... read more

What to do when Kevin and the girls are at work and school? That is a question I had been asking myself since we got here. It was great while we were all together but I was a little fearful of what life would be like when I found myself by myself. All my friends were half way around the world and I was beginning to realize that I would be alone!!!!! The day came on Thursday when Kevin went off to work for the first time. At 7:30 am Thursday morning , Kevin and the girls walked out the door to head off to the school and H3C (3Com Division). Now what???? Well I got dressed, cleaned the dishes, put a load of laundry in and........ it was still only 8:30am. What the heck was ... read more

MONDAY 2nd FEB Big day for the "Wilson Girls" today. It's their 1st day at their new school in Hangzhou. They are going to the international school here. It's based on the US curriculum so that they won't be too far behind when we go home to Massachusetts. There was a lot of anxiety with both Megan and Sophie last night. Sophie was worried that none of the children would want to be her friend and Megan was just worried about EVERYTHING!!! They both managed to sleep OK thankfully! This morning Sophie seemed OK. She had all her uniform on one hanger including underwear, headband, necklace and earings. It was the cutest thing!! He sister took forever to get ready and was very quiet. Our "driver" started today so we went downstairs to say Hi and ... read more
